Remember Your First Love

“…But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”
(NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE)

I think sometimes we too can forget our first love – Jesus. We think back to how ‘on-fire’ we were in the beginning, but years down the track, our love for the things of God seems to be secondary. Sometimes we allow the stress and pressures of life control us and cause us to make unhealthy decisions. We get caught up in our problems and build a wall between God and ourselves. We may not be aware we are even doing it. We become unhappy in our lives whether it’s in relationships, in our workplaces or even in service to the Lord. We look to other things or people to make us happy. We forget Jesus.

I believe God is calling us back to our first love. He wants us to find our happiness in Him. Nothing else this world can offer can fill the void inside – only Jesus can fill us with what we really long for, after all, God has created us to need fellowship with Him.

Filling our lives with material things to make us happy, or going for another job, or being with people we think will make us happy, is not  the answer. It might be for a short time – but then we become unhappy again. We become discontented because these things won’t bring us lasting happiness. People let us down, the ‘ideal’ job fails to meet our expectations further down the track, and we become bored with our ‘material toys’. No, in all these things we should never seek happiness. Our happiness is only found in Jesus. He fills us with all we will ever need- so we needn’t crave for all these other things.

Lord I desire to come back to You
The ‘first love’ of my life
For happiness can’t be found in this world
But only in Jesus Christ

RM230 per couple (non-members)

Venue : Klang Wesley Methodist Church

Contact : Church Office @ 03-33722698

About The Course

The Marriage Course was developed by Nicky and Sila Lee, co-authors of The Marriage Book and The Parenting Book. They have been married for over thirty years, have four children and are on the staff at Holy Trinity Brompton – the London church that started the Alpha course. They started The Marriage Preparation Course in 1985 and The Marriage Course in 1996, and the courses continue to spread with thousands of courses now running around the world.

They have spoken to thousands on the subject of marriage and are the co-authors of The Marriage Book which has sold over 52,000 copies since it was published in 2000. They run The Marriage Course three times a year at Holy Trinity Brompton with around 100 couples on each course.

The Marriage Course talks are presented in one of two ways:

  • DVD talks featuring Nicky and Sila
  • Live talks

The talks are interspersed with filmed clips of couples talking about their experiences of marriage and street interviews from around the world.

Over seven sessions of the course you will discover practical tools to help you:

  • understand each other’s needs
  • communicate more effectively
  • grow closer through resolving conflict
  • heal the ways you’ve hurt each other
  • recognise how your upbringing affects your relationship
  • improve relationships with parents and in-laws
  • develop greater sexual intimacy
  • discover each other’s love languages and much, much more!

Session Topics

  1. Building Strong Foundations – This session helps couples to look at their lifestyle and its effect upon their marriage, and to discover more about each other’s needs and desires – particularly on an emotional level.
  2. The Art of Communication – Listening is a vital skill for a strong marriage. In this session couples practise communicating their feelings and listening effectively to one another.
  3. Resolving Conflict – In this session we look at how couples can increase their intimacy by expressing appreciation to each other, recognising their differences, learning to negotiate disagreements and praying for each other (if they feel comfortable doing so).
  4. The Power of Forgiveness – This session addresses the ways we will inevitably have hurt each other and how to resolve these so we don’t create a backlog of anger and resentment. We look at the process of healing through identifying the hurt, saying sorry and forgiving.
  5. The Impact of Family – Past and Present – This session focuses on helping couples to recognise how their family background affects the way they relate to each other. They also consider how to build a good and healthy relationship with their parents, in-laws and wider family, and how hurt from childhood can be healed.
  6. Good Sex – Sexual intimacy needs to be worked at and developed. It isn’t just the icing on the cake; it’s a vital ingredient of the cake itself. In this session couples are encouraged to talk about their sexual relationship and to recognise where they need to make changes.
  7. Love in Action – This session looks at five ways of expressing love – through words, time, touch, presents and actions. Couples discover which expression of love is most important for their partner and how to put this into practice.

Tribute To Steven Lee

STEVEN LEE CHENG TENG
24 Sep 1942 – 14 Nov 2010
This is the only race worth running. I’ve run hard right to the finish, believed all the way (2 Timothy 4:7). Thus is the theme verse that described the life of our brother Steven Lee. He was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer and sought treatment since early this year.

A banker by profession, he had worked in Standard Chartered Bank for over 30 years in various positions within the Asia region. Post retirement, he was engaged by other financial institutions and subsequently served in Seminary Theology Malaysia, Seremban.

Steven is no stranger to many of us in Klang Wesley. He was involved in the Boys Brigade in his early years and served in various leadership positions in the LCEC. Apart from the life of the local church, Steven was also actively involved in the Gideons Ministry and more recently in helping setup a local community church in Shah Alam.

Steven was a gifted person in the area of administration. He used his giftings to help ensure that the house of God was in order and that the church was accountable for the stewardship of resources provided. His passion was demonstrated in multiple aspects from church finances to membership databases, from Bible distribution to conference registration, from home visitations to pastoral relations, and his latest songbook compilation. In all these, he undertook the roles with a great sense of responsibility and conviction in his heart.

Steven was also a devoted husband, lover, companion and friend to Doris. A dedicated father, adviser and role model to Andrew, Bernard and Samuel; together with their spouses Helen, Li May and Sen Sing. He was also a loving grandfather to Joshua, Zoe and Jared.

We will miss our brother dearly. We thank God for allowing Steven to be part of our lives. He has truly lived the life described in 2 Timothy 4:7 and challenged us to make our lives count for the Kingdom of God.

Characteristics of the First Century Church

The first characteristic of the early church is that the Christians were joyful to hear the Word of the Lord, and the people allowed God’s Word to sink in and affect their hearts. They did not hear the words and afterward go up to Peter and tell him that was a nice sermon. They allowed the words to be life changing, and did not sit and listen with wandering minds and closed hearts.

Secondly, the people devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching. True disciples always want to learn more about God and are devoted to the teaching of the apostles found in the Scriptures. This devotion is not only seen by listening to sermons, but is exhibited in joining other Christians in Bible Study. This devotion is seen at home when time is taken to spend dwelling upon God’s Word.

The early Christians did not declare themselves to be in fellowship simply because they had been baptized or merely attended worship services. They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as anyone had a need. These disciples had all things in common and this is true Christianity. If all that we have is the Lord’s, then I must be willing to give what God has given to me to others who may need it.

The first century Christians met together daily to worship God. Wherever and whenever these Christians could meet together, they would. Do we have the same desire? Instead of joy and anticipation, too often we exhibit disappointment or even anger for being expected to show up every night for a few days. I know that we have jobs that are demanding, schools that push our children, and families that take much time to maintain. But when a congregation sees fit to come together for a common purpose, especially for worship, we should be overjoyed for the opportunity, not groaning about the sacrifice we must make.

It was not enough for these disciples to congregate together, study God’s Word, and give to any who had need among them. They had to share the Gospel to others, an action we see these first century disciples make repeatedly through the book of Acts.

It’s our job to learn from these lessons provided by the early church and live them out in our individual churches. Are you doing your part in your church?

(BRENT KERCHEVILLE)
