Reflection: ON DISPLAY

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

Notice how carefully Paul puts works in the right place. You don’t obtain anything from God by working for it. You never deserve anything but judgment at His hand. If He gave us what we deserve, we would all end up in hell. No, we receive His grace, His mercy, His love. But these result in good works. That is the point. They are designed to produce good works. It is a marvelous manifestation of God’s ability.

The word workmanship is really the word “poem”. We are His poem. Perhaps it would be better rendered, “we are His masterpiece.” God is working out in our lives a tremendous exhibition of His wisdom, His power, His love, His life, His character, His peace, and His joy. He is teaching us, training us, bringing us along, applying the paint in exactly the right places, producing a marvelous masterpiece to be put on display. This is to result in good works: kindness, love, mercy, compassion, help to one another, meeting one another’s needs.

Paul says that God has prepared these works beforehand. I experienced an interesting illustration of this. One of our interns flew to Albuquerque with me. We decided, as the plane was landing, that we would have some prayer together. I hadn’t talked to him about this passage at all, but I was struck by the way he prayed. He said, “Father, thank You for the good works already prepared for us in Albuquerque, for the fact that they are waiting for us to step into them and experience them.” Sure enough, after we got to Albuquerque these began to unfold.

There was a missionary there from the Amazon region of South America who was discouraged and terribly upset, ready to quit the ministry. Through the ministry we had there he came alive and began to see again what God could do. He came to us with a light on his face and said, “I’m going back to my field completely revolutionized in my approach. Now I’ve learned how God operates.”

A young pastor was facing dissension in his church. He wanted some counsel on how to handle it. God enabled the Scriptures to speak to that situation and give him wisdom and guidance for it. All these good works had been prepared beforehand. All we did was step into them.

Do you have any idea how many good works God has prepared for you? They are waiting for you to enter into as you walk in faith and trust and dependence upon Christ. The situations are there, ready and waiting for you to step into. This is what God has called you to. As you do so, you become a vivid display of the greatness and the glory of God.

For your Reflection:

Before we step out from home, we usually think about how we look. Do we also think about God’s plan for us today; how He is going to display Himself through us today?

Prayer List: 16 – 17 October 2021

Sunday, (Oct 17) – Praise God that by His grace, He has re-created broken people like us to be His masterpieces, that we may honour Him each day by doing the works He has prepared in advance for us to do. Pray that He will guide us in how to best use our time, efforts and talents to reflect His love, compassion and goodness. Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower us daily to walk in the good works God has in store for us, and to be open to all that He would have us do. As He continues to work in our lives, pray that He will help us become more like Christ each and every day. Pray that every day our lives may be lived to serve God in word and deed to His praise and glory.

Monday, (Oct 18)Missions Month: We pray for all persons serving tirelessly behind the scenes of the Missions Committee. We are grateful for their willingness and heart for Missions. Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon them as they serve. Pray for God’s love to so fill their hearts that their confidence in doing God’s work stems out of the love that comes from God. Pray that the joy of the Lord will be their strength as they continue to do the work that they have been called to.

Tuesday, (Oct 19) – Pray that our church leadership and staff will be anointed with wisdom, discernment and understanding to be prepared for post-pandemic challenges to the church – primarily in the ministries and practices of the church. Pray that they will be ready for the digital impact on in-person attendance as more people might choose to engage online. Pray for wisdom to be able to build strong zealous fellowships as God’s people, while being “physically distanced”.

Wednesday, (Oct 20)Pray for TRAC: The District Conference of Central District 2 will be held tomorrow, 21 October, 2021. Pray for all delegates that would be attending this conference via zoom. Pray for our eyes to be opened to see what God is doing in the CD2 churches. Pray for our hearts to be grateful for all that God is accomplishing in our churches. Pray for wisdom to be upon our District Superintendent, Rev. Paul Christie as he chairs the conference. Pray that God would help us discern His will in the lives of the churches.

Thursday, (Oct 21) – As the daily COVID-19 cases generally continue to decline and with the easing of restrictions, pray that the rakyat will heed the plea of exhausted frontliners to stay vigilant and diligently follow all SOPs in the coming crucial few weeks. As the nation is moving into the endemic stage, pray that all Malaysians will be prepared to adapt to new norms and understand that the world will not be the same anymore. Pray that the rakyat will collectively come together as part of our social responsibility to embrace all the SOPs and guidelines set by the government, and adapt, adjust and accommodate these new norms in our lives.

Friday, (Oct 22)Pray for the Nation: Pray for peace to reign as partisan politicians ramp up their manoeuvrings and strategies as the nation draws closer to the next general elections. Pray for a new generation of national leadership made up of righteous men and women of integrity who can steer the nation with impartiality, sincerity, justice and righteousness. Pray for the emergence and growth of mature political leadership able and willing to work together for the sake and interest of the nation and the rakyat, instead of jockeying for position and power. Pray for political leaders who will be able to steer the country away from drifting into mediocrity, bankruptcy and inept governance.

Saturday, (Oct 23)Pray for the World: Pray for divine protection over the Christians left behind in Afghanistan who will become even more exposed to persecution. Pray especially for God’s protection over the women and girls. Pray that God will protect them from the suffering to come, and to strengthen them in their faith and they will stay strong in the Lord. Pray that the healthcare system in the nation will be able to sustain itself with international aid. Pray for evil to be pushed back, and for God’s supernatural conviction of sin upon the new administration that their minds and hearts will be renewed through the sovereign hand of the Lord.

Reflection: WHAT’S THE PARABLE OF THE SHEEP AND GOATS ABOUT?

Is salvation based on works?

Because The Parable of the Sheep and Goats (Matthew 25>31-46) ties the sheep and the goats’ behavior to their eternal destiny, it’s easy to walk away assuming that our eternal destination rests on what we do or fail to do. But that’s not really the point Jesus is driving at.

The Gospel’s message is clear throughout Scripture that “all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). It is by faith, through grace, that we are reconciled to God.

We just can’t miss out on the important message that salvation should transform us into the kinds of people who serve their King by doing good for others. So, what can we take away from this parable? Here are four quick lessons we could learn from the story of the sheep and the goats:

1. The sheep didn’t know what they did

It’s impressive to realize that the sheep are surprised by this turn of events. They weren’t serving others to be noticed or to curry favor with the King. They were doing good because it was in their nature to care for others.

2. Little things matter a lot

The King commends the sheep for everything from feeding the hungry to clothing the naked. But in there, He recognizes something as simple as a drink given to the thirsty. The point is that there is no service too small for Jesus to remember.

3. Don’t leave good undone

The King’s interaction with the goats is the most sobering aspect of this parable. It’s one thing to celebrate the positive and kind things someone does. It’s another thing entirely to realize that the King is paying attention to opportunities to help others that we neglect to capitalize on. It’s a mistake to assume that becoming more Christlike is merely a case of stopping bad behaviors. The more like Jesus we become, the more our lives are poured out in service to others.

4. We have to put in the effort

So many of the kindnesses the King mentions are ones the sheep would have had to go out of their way to perform. No one just happens upon someone in prison and stops for a visit. You have to make a plan to spend time with someone in that position. If we want to be sheep, we’ll be on the lookout for ways to love people around us.

Becoming people who do good:

It’s by God’s grace that we are reconciled to God. There is absolutely nothing we can do to earn the privilege of becoming God’s children. But that doesn’t mean that what we do doesn’t matter. Jesus explained it to the Pharisees this way: “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit” (Matthew 12:33).

In the story of the sheep and goats, Jesus wants us to understand that our choices reveal the kingdom to whom we belong.

Prayer List: 9 – 10, Oct 2021

Sunday, (Oct 10) – Pray that every spirit of stubbornness, pride and disobedience, which are the marks of goats, be replaced in our lives with gentle, submissive and obedient spirits – the marks of sheep. Pray that we will take up Christ’s challenge to be more like Him, to be willing to pour out our lives in service to others, not in search of reward or payback, but simply because it is the loving thing to do, knowing that no service is too small for Jesus to remember. Pray that as sheep of the Shepherd, we will follow our Shepherd’s lead, and love others as He has loved us and given Himself for us, and that our choices will reveal the Kingdom to which we belong.

Monday, (Oct 11)Missions Month: Pray for the great needs of the migrants in our nation to be met. Pray for God’s guidance to be upon the migrant ministries in our midst. Pray that Klang Wesley’s involvement in the migrant ministry such as the EL-Shaddai Refugee Learning Centre would continue. Pray that God would raise up more Christian teachers to be salt and light to these children who are enrolled in the EL-Shaddai Refugee Learning Centre. Pray for the seed of the Gospel to be planted into the hearts of the migrants. Pray that they will be open to the message of Christ that is being shared to them. Pray that they will experience the love of Christ through the church.

Tuesday, (Oct 12) – Pray for the upcoming 2nd Local Conference of Wesley Methodist Church, Klang that would be held on 13th of October 2021. Pray that our leaders would be able to discern God’s work and movement in the life of the Church. Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon Rev. Paul Christie (District Superintendent of CD2) who would be presiding over the conference. Pray for unity among our leaders that together we may lead our church unto the path that God has crafted for us.

Wednesday, (Oct 13)Pray for the Nation: Pray for a peaceful resolution to the Melaka political crisis after the Chief Minister lost his majority in the state legislative assembly. Pray that the authorities will take the cue from the Sabah state elections and consider deferring the Melaka snap polls as the nation cannot afford another wave of COVID-19 infections. Pray that the Melaka State authorities will listen to the pleas of the people in the state, many of whom want the state elections to be postponed. Pray for wisdom for the Agong and the Federal government as to whether to call for an emergency order over the state and put in a caretaker government for the time being until the situation is safe to hold elections.

Thursday, (Oct 14) – The daily COVID-19 cases are dropping, the pandemic situation is improving, and more restrictions are being lifted. As the government has opened up interstate travel, pray that the people who are making travel plans will carefully follow all the SOPs implemented by the government. Pray also that the on-going vaccination programme among the teenagers above 12 years old will continue smoothly, and that those vaccinated will have no or minimal side effects from the vaccine. Pray also for kindergartens and child-care centres as they will open to facilitate parents who will be going back to work in their offices. Pray that the teachers and helpers will ensure all SOPs are strictly followed, and the centres will be safe environments. Pray that God will protect the little children, teachers and helpers.

Friday, (Oct 15)Pray for TRAC: We thank God that the pandemic has caused many individuals and NGOs from all walks of life to freely distribute food aid to all in need – pushing back the race and religion barriers through kindness and bringing some measure of healing to our multi-ethnic country. Let us pray for initiatives such as the new low risk Covid-19 Patients Quarantine Centres in Kuala Lumpur and in Penang operated by Crest Malaysia to help the B40 community. Pray for more of our TRAC Churches to be involved in these initiates.

Saturday, (Oct 16)Pray for the World: Pray for missionaries all over the world who are now adjusting to a new way of doing ministry or who may still be trying to figure things out. Pray that God will help them rest in Him. Pray that if there are feelings of guilt or uncertainty, God will turn those into times of seeking and abiding in Him. Pray that the Lord will reveal to them what He wants the focus in their lives and ministries to be right now, and grant them His peace that surpasses all understanding.
