Reflection: THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE

Give children flashlights in a dark place, and they will be entertained for a long time. Light has amazing properties. It travels about 186,000 miles per second. It is also powerful—especially when we speak of the Light of Jesus Christ, “the Light of all people” that shines into and overcomes the darkness of our world: In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5).

Jesus calls us to be light, to shine like stars in the world. (Philippians 2:15). How do we do that? Eugene Peterson, in THE MESSAGE, states Philippians 2:15 this way: “Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God.”

Mother Teresa shone for Jesus in the darkness of poverty in India. A friend who spends time with the dying and their families is light in the darkness of pain and grief. The mentor to a fatherless child is a light in the darkness of loneliness and bewilderment. The worker who takes time to listen to a coworker and offer support is a light in the darkness of discouragement and despair.

There are many ways to be a light for Jesus. May our lives shine so brightly through Christlike behaviors and attitudes that others will ask where our life and love come from—and of course the answer is Christ, our Savior.

For Your Reflection:

  • Is your light shining brightly for Jesus? If not, what has caused it to be dim?
  • In what ways can your light shine brightly in this time of the pandemic?

Prayer List: 4 – 5 September, 2021

Sunday, (Sept 5) – Pray that we as a church will truly live our lives as children of Light. Pray that we would learn to dissociate ourselves from the lifestyle that is contrary to the new way of life that God has called us into. Pray for a continual indwelling of the Holy Spirit in each one of our lives. Pray that we would be strong in understanding God’s Word so that our faith may be strengthened, enabling us to achieve great things for the honor and glory of God.

Monday, (Sept 6) – Even as we give thanks to God that the daily COVID-19 cases in the Klang Valley are declining, the concern now is for Sabah, Johor, Kedah, Penang and Kelantan that are facing a surge in daily new infections. Pray for God’s wisdom upon the newly appointed Minister of Health and his ministry to curb these rising cases by prioritising vaccine supplies to these states and also by transferring assets and human resources from other states that require them less. Pray that these strategies will see a reduction in the daily number of cases, hospitalisations, critical cases and deaths. Pray too that the public will continue to practice strict adherence to all the SOPs regardless of whether they have been fully vaccinated or not.

Tuesday, (Sept 7)Pray for the World: Pray for Afghanistan. With most international aid shut, Afghan government services cannot function and public employees are not receiving their salaries. Pray for God to intervene and provide a solution as this situation will lead to a food crisis within a month. Pray for the new government formed under the Taliban group, that their minds and hearts will be renewed through the sovereign hand of the Lord. Pray for them to come out from whatever lies that have blinded them and they will experience the light of Christ. Continue to pray for the safety of the believers in the country.

Wednesday, (Sept 8) – Malaysia will offer Covid-19 jabs to all children aged between 12 and 17 beginning this month. Pray for a smooth roll-out of the vaccination programme throughout the nation, and that many children will be able to be fully vaccinated as schools are scheduled to reopen in October 2021. As the level of education in the nation has been deteriorating over the years, pray that the Ministry of Education will be willing to consult, engage and work together with experts to implement an effective education system that incorporates good and holistic character development with an excellent academic syllabus. Pray for equal opportunities for all children regardless of race, ethnicity or religion, especially for the Orang Asli and Orang Asal children.

Thursday, (Sept 9) – Pray that the Church of Malaysia will not let the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic rule us, but that we shall have the strength, courage, wisdom and freedom of faith to bring relief and serve the community with compassion and grace as people cry out for help. Pray that we win favour with the community by our authentic witness of courageous selfless service, our generosity and sacrificial love for those severely impacted by the pandemic. Pray that our motivation is the love of God for all mankind.

Friday, (Sept 10)Pray for TRAC: Pray for the upcoming Joint Boards Meeting (11th Sept). Pray for God’s guidance to be upon Bishop Joshua Khong as he leads and directs the conference (TRAC). Pray for all Board chairpersons who would be doing their presentations that they would speak with clarity. Pray that we as a conference will do that which God has and is showing us. Pray that the hearts of all those attending the meeting will be in tune with the Holy Spirit. Pray also for no technical hiccups throughout the meeting that would be held online.

Saturday, (Sept 11)Pray for the Nation: The first meeting of the 4th session of the 14th Malaysian Parliament will be held from September 13 to October 12, 2021. Pray that God will banish from the hearts of the Parliamentarians all selfishness and corrupt intentions. Pray that all the ministers of the new Cabinet and all the MPs will put aside their differences and strive to work together for the common good of the nation and the people. Pray that this government will be God-fearing, righteous, upright and competent enough to lift our nation out of this miry pit of a devastating health crisis that has resulted in a weakened financial situation..

Reflection: ACTS 2: 42 – 47 REWRITTEN FOR TODAY

I wonder what Christians 2,000 years in the future (if the Lord tarries) might think about the church community of the 21st century. What description might they unearth that aptly describes the typical church experience of today? I decided to rewrite Acts 2:42-47 phrase by phrase, trying to capture the experience of many Christians today.

ACTS 2: 42 – 47 REWRITTEN FOR 21ST CENTURY

42 The believers dabbled in the Bible, maybe reading the “Verse of the Day” on their phone app as they rush out the door. They occasionally attended church, putting in their one hour and often avoiding any real fellowship. As for breaking bread, the church offered a quick Wednesday night meal on plastic chairs in the basement for busy families hurrying from after school activities to tuition classes or music lessons to grocery shopping. They usually only prayed in times of crisis.

43 Boredom and apathy was upon most everyone, because there was nothing supernatural or awe inspiring about the pastor and the church’s ministry.

44 People largely kept their faith life private, in a separate religious box they opened only on Sundays for an hour. 45 The rest of the week they worked hard for their own family’s wellbeing, trying to get ahead, pay their own bills, and attain the American Dream. Some in the church were barely scraping by but nobody knew, and the needy usually felt too ashamed to ask for financial help.

46 Every day, the believers rarely saw their church friends, as their everyday lives were centered around other people and activities — work functions, kids’ activities, etc. They were too busy and stressed (or embarrassed about their messy houses) to have people over for dinner, so they often ate their food alone with tired and weary hearts.

47 They muttered a quick silent prayer as their heads hit the pillow, and very few of their coworkers and non-church friends even knew they were Christians. They kept dragging themselves to church each week to put in their obligatory hour; but the church rarely saw any new visitors and there hadn’t been a new convert and baptism in years.

ACTS 2: 42 – 47 ORIGINAL (NIV)

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Let this contrast inspire us all to continue striving for the kind of church community God desires for His people!

(JEREMY BERG)

Prayer List: 28 – 29, Aug 2021

Sunday, (Aug 29) – Pray that God will continue to shape and fashion us so that we will reflect Christ more and more in our lives. Pray that He will help us to be a people who are devoted to His Word, that we will be devoted to learning from the Bible together, whether it is through our online Worship Services or our Cell Groups, and we will be committed to attending these meetings, even when we are tired. Pray that we will be devoted to spend time together (via online now) to forge meaningful relationships. Praise God for all our corporate prayer meetings and pray for more people to join these meetings. Pray that we will be sacrificial in seeking to meet the material, emotional and spiritual needs of people during this season of the pandemic.

Monday, (Aug 30) – Pray that we as a church will learn to be still before new challenges and obstacles. Pray that we will learn to look back to the wonderful acts of God and be reminded of His unfailing presence as we walk in His divine plans. Pray for courage to move on as we put our trust completely in God. Pray for the church leadership as they discern together God’s plan for the church for the coming term (2022-2023). Pray that our ears be attentive to the leading and promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Tuesday, (Aug 31)Pray for the World: Last week, 2 suicide bombers struck Kabul airport in Afghanistan, killing 13 US troops and dozens of Afghan civilians. Pray for God’s protection upon all the people who are evacuating from the country. Pray that the country will not be a haven for extremists and terror groups. A new wave of refugees is expected to come from Afghanistan to many parts of the Middle East and the rest of the world. Pray for God’s protection and provision over them in their journeys. Pray also for God’s supernatural covering and provision for the Christians who remain in the country.

Wednesday, (Sept 1) – The COVID-19 cases mainly remained above the 20,000-mark in the past week, with high rate of cases in East Malaysia, and some of the northern states in Peninsula Malaysia. Pray that the vaccination roll-out will be speeded up in these states where the daily cases continue to be high. As anti-vaxxers are trying to get fake digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates, and their irresponsible action is a threat to public health, pray for a collective effort to clamp down on these fake vaccine certificates, from businesses checking them rigorously to reporting sites offering these fake certificates. Pray also that the rakyat will stay vigilant and continue to follow all the SOPs regardless of whether they have been fully vaccinated or not.

Thursday, (Sept 2)Pray for the Nation: Thank God that there is some form of political stability in the nation with the new government administration and new cabinet. Pray for uprightness, competency, effectiveness and integrity for all the MPs. During this time of crisis, pray that God will give all our political leaders wisdom that they may be able to do things beyond their understanding. Pray that God will help them choose the right paths when they make decisions on behalf of the nation. Pray that they will be humble and have respect for one another. Pray that, when they have differing opinions and agendas, God will transform their hearts and minds, and help them to work together for the good of the nation.

Friday, (Sept 3)Pray for TRAC: Pray for God’s guidance to be upon all Boards in the Trinity Annual Conference. Pray that as board members meet together to plan out their respective programmes for the coming year, they will be attentive to the Holy Spirit’s leading and promptings. Pray for wisdom as we seek to do ministry in the new norm. Pray for TRAC Bishop, Bishop Joshua Khong, as he leads the conference in accordance to God’s will.

Saturday, (Sept 4) – Pray for the youths in our church that God will protect them against the kingdom of darkness and against distractions from their focus on God’s will for their lives. Pray that they will have the fear of the Lord and a willing spirit to serve Him in the prime of their youth. Pray that the Spirit will birth in their hearts a love for God and for others, especially for their friends in Christ. Pray that they will be grounded in the truth of God’s Word. Pray that God will grant them clarity of mind and spirit in this age of confusion, and strength to battle mental and physical anguish as they are confined to their homes because of the pandemic. Pray for re-established faith for those who are discouraged.
