Pre-Recorded Saturday & Sunday Worship Service – 11th & 12th Sept 2021

Title: A Living Hope
Scripture: 1 Peter 1: 3 – 9
Speaker: Mr Yap Chee Kai

NOTES:

1.0 Introduction
1.1 Today is 9/11: marks the 20th anniversary of the memorial in NYC that took away the lives of almost 3,000 souls, including Brady (a faithful believer of Christ). Where was hope on that darkest, tragic day?
1.2 Martin Luther King Jr’s quote: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
1.3 Today’s text is about hope. Peter’s living hope lies in the risen Lord, and our hope is anchored in this truth.

2.0 Living Hope: Reason for Praise and Thanksgiving (vv.3–5).
2.1 V.3 begins with praise and thanksgiving: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2.2 Peter lists reasons for praise and thanksgiving to his readers who suffered under great persecution from the unbelieving and hostile world of pagan religion.
2.3 In v.3, Peter says we’ve been born again, to or into a living hope, that’s real, certain, living and effective, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
2.4 Peter reassures us in v.4: the object of this living hope is an inheritance: our eternal home in His kingdom.
2.5 This inheritance is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is also kept in heaven for us.
2.6 Also, in v.5, God guards and sustains His people’s faith, so that they can receive His eternal inheritance that awaits them in the last days.
2.7 As God’s people, we need to respond with praise and thanksgiving to Him. This is what Peter is addressing his readers.

3.0 Living Hope amidst Suffering (vv.6–7)
3.1 Peter exhorts his readers to rejoice amidst their sufferings: v.6. Peter spurs and encourages our faith to remain steadfast.
3.2 Peter reminds us again that compared with the eternity we will be having, we need to suffer, in v.6: for a little while, if necessary, and have been grieved by various trials.
3.3 Peter stresses the grief Christians are experiencing now has a divine purpose, which is in v.7: so that the tested genuineness of our faith, is far more precious than gold that perishes.
3.4 Having proven to have that genuineness of faith, can we truly result in praise and glory and honor to God, who has preserved us and kept us safe for the salvation to be revealed in the last day at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

4.0 The Respond.
4.1 Remember, I first started with 9/11, with Brady. Brady’s sister, Camille in her grief, concluded “Hope Isn’t Lost” for her brother, because in that aura of hopelessness, it was the gospel that gave him hope. To those who have not put their faith in Jesus, will you put your faith and trust in Him today?
4.2 And for those who believe in Him, Peter urges the believers to keep trusting Him. Let us give thanks for His great mercy and the eternal inheritance: the Living Hope. Let us pray.

Reflection: GOOD THINGS DURING BAD TIMES

All kinds of trials … have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith … may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1 Peter 1: 6 – 7

Why might God want to use a crisis in our lives? We naturally consider crises to be bad, but God often does some very good things through these bad experiences. There are things that God teach in a crisis that are much harder for us to learn at other times.

For instance, in a crisis we begin to discover just how little control we really have over our lives. Humbled, we being to pray more sincerely and worship more deeply.

We may also begin to realize what really matters most to us. Our crisis experiences usually leave us more appreciative of people and less obsessed with possessions.

Crises have a way of making us very unhappy — which isn’t all bad, either. As our happiness is stripped away, God can help us discover a kind of peace that can be richer than we would ever have imagined our happiness could be.

And through it all we get some good practice at sniffing out God’s presence in the middle of a situation that often just stinks. When we resist this kind of faith, we miss the point entirely. When we cooperate with God, we can begin to discover a richness that lasts long after the crisis has passed.

What kind of blessings has God brought to you during a crisis in your life?

Lord, please use our sufferings to lead us closer to You. Amen.

(RON VANDERWELL)

Prayer List: 11 – 12, Sept 2021

Sunday, (Sept 12) – Praise God for bringing us into His family by a new birth through the resurrection of Christ, that Jesus is our Living Hope and we live our lives by faith in Him. Praise God for the lasting hope kept for us in the heavenly places – a glorious inheritance that does not depend on our faithfulness but on His. As we are being prepared for the coming glories of our heavenly home, pray that the Lord will help us rejoice in our future hope despite the distresses of life’s various trials, knowing that He has promised to guard us by His mighty power. Thank God for being with us in all our trials and pray that we may come forth as gold that has been tried in the fire, to the praise and glory of Christ.

Monday, (Sept 13) – Pray for Wesley Klang to be prepared for the post-pandemic season. Pray that our church leadership and staff will be bestowed with wisdom and understanding. Pray that we would look to God for guidance as we face the challenges that are sure to come. Pray that the church leadership will be united in one mind and heart in decision making. Above all, pray that our church leadership will continue to walk closely with the Lord as they seek to point others to Christ.

Tuesday, (Sept 14)Pray for the Nation: The Parliamentary Sittings reopened yesterday (September 13, 2021) and will finish on October 12, 2021. Pray that God will sovereignly guide, through the Holy Spirit, all members of the government: the Agong, all the Members of Parliament, the Speakers and all who are in positions of responsibility. Pray that our political leaders will not lead the nation astray due to love of power, desire for popularity, or by engaging in any form of manipulation. Pray that they will put aside their political and personal interests, and prejudices, and fulfil their responsibilities and obligations to seek the welfare and prosperity of the nation and all the people of Malaysia.

Wednesday, (Sept 15) – As the Klang Valley has moved into Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan, pray that all businesses and retailers that have reopened will ensure that all patrons are fully vaccinated and exercise strict compliance with all the SOPs. Pray that the public will continue to exercise caution as they are now allowed more freedom, so that there will not be any spike in the daily COVID-19 cases. Pray for urgent medical supplies and vaccines to be made available for the states that are struggling to cope with high daily cases, especially in Sarawak. Pray also for wisdom for the Ministry of Health that has made plans to vaccinate teenagers in tandem with the resumption of classes.

Thursday, (Sept 16) – Pray for Wesley Methodist School Klang, for the mental health of the students and teachers as learning and teaching online has been very challenging. Pray for more intake of students in the coming year as the registration for new students is low at present. Praise God for the Christian activities in the school presently held online: the compulsory classes to impart knowledge of the Bible to all the students, the Chapel services held every Friday, as well as the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigades. Pray that God will minister to the students and teachers, and for the seed of the Gospel to be sown in the hearts and minds of those who have yet to place their faith in Christ.

Friday, (Sept 17)Pray for TRAC: Pray for all District Superintendents in TRAC as they prepare to enter into a busy season of having to conduct Local Conferences for the churches in their respective districts. Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon each one of them as they preside over these Local Conferences. Pray that they may be able to bring a word of encouragement to the church leadership in the midst of this pandemic. Pray that our District Superintendents will be able to manage their time well that despite their busy schedules they would be able to rest.

Saturday, (Sept 18)Pray for the World: The United Nations development agency says Afghanistan is teetering on the brink of “universal poverty” as the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan has put 20 years of steady economic gains at risk. Pray that the nations of the world will unite to prevent the economic collapse of the country, and find ways to provide humanitarian relief on a huge scale and quickly allow money to flow to Afghanistan to prevent a total breakdown of the economy and social order while creating safeguards to ensure the money is not misused by the Taliban authorities.

Reflection: THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE

Give children flashlights in a dark place, and they will be entertained for a long time. Light has amazing properties. It travels about 186,000 miles per second. It is also powerful—especially when we speak of the Light of Jesus Christ, “the Light of all people” that shines into and overcomes the darkness of our world: In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5).

Jesus calls us to be light, to shine like stars in the world. (Philippians 2:15). How do we do that? Eugene Peterson, in THE MESSAGE, states Philippians 2:15 this way: “Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God.”

Mother Teresa shone for Jesus in the darkness of poverty in India. A friend who spends time with the dying and their families is light in the darkness of pain and grief. The mentor to a fatherless child is a light in the darkness of loneliness and bewilderment. The worker who takes time to listen to a coworker and offer support is a light in the darkness of discouragement and despair.

There are many ways to be a light for Jesus. May our lives shine so brightly through Christlike behaviors and attitudes that others will ask where our life and love come from—and of course the answer is Christ, our Savior.

For Your Reflection:

  • Is your light shining brightly for Jesus? If not, what has caused it to be dim?
  • In what ways can your light shine brightly in this time of the pandemic?

Prayer List: 4 – 5 September, 2021

Sunday, (Sept 5) – Pray that we as a church will truly live our lives as children of Light. Pray that we would learn to dissociate ourselves from the lifestyle that is contrary to the new way of life that God has called us into. Pray for a continual indwelling of the Holy Spirit in each one of our lives. Pray that we would be strong in understanding God’s Word so that our faith may be strengthened, enabling us to achieve great things for the honor and glory of God.

Monday, (Sept 6) – Even as we give thanks to God that the daily COVID-19 cases in the Klang Valley are declining, the concern now is for Sabah, Johor, Kedah, Penang and Kelantan that are facing a surge in daily new infections. Pray for God’s wisdom upon the newly appointed Minister of Health and his ministry to curb these rising cases by prioritising vaccine supplies to these states and also by transferring assets and human resources from other states that require them less. Pray that these strategies will see a reduction in the daily number of cases, hospitalisations, critical cases and deaths. Pray too that the public will continue to practice strict adherence to all the SOPs regardless of whether they have been fully vaccinated or not.

Tuesday, (Sept 7)Pray for the World: Pray for Afghanistan. With most international aid shut, Afghan government services cannot function and public employees are not receiving their salaries. Pray for God to intervene and provide a solution as this situation will lead to a food crisis within a month. Pray for the new government formed under the Taliban group, that their minds and hearts will be renewed through the sovereign hand of the Lord. Pray for them to come out from whatever lies that have blinded them and they will experience the light of Christ. Continue to pray for the safety of the believers in the country.

Wednesday, (Sept 8) – Malaysia will offer Covid-19 jabs to all children aged between 12 and 17 beginning this month. Pray for a smooth roll-out of the vaccination programme throughout the nation, and that many children will be able to be fully vaccinated as schools are scheduled to reopen in October 2021. As the level of education in the nation has been deteriorating over the years, pray that the Ministry of Education will be willing to consult, engage and work together with experts to implement an effective education system that incorporates good and holistic character development with an excellent academic syllabus. Pray for equal opportunities for all children regardless of race, ethnicity or religion, especially for the Orang Asli and Orang Asal children.

Thursday, (Sept 9) – Pray that the Church of Malaysia will not let the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic rule us, but that we shall have the strength, courage, wisdom and freedom of faith to bring relief and serve the community with compassion and grace as people cry out for help. Pray that we win favour with the community by our authentic witness of courageous selfless service, our generosity and sacrificial love for those severely impacted by the pandemic. Pray that our motivation is the love of God for all mankind.

Friday, (Sept 10)Pray for TRAC: Pray for the upcoming Joint Boards Meeting (11th Sept). Pray for God’s guidance to be upon Bishop Joshua Khong as he leads and directs the conference (TRAC). Pray for all Board chairpersons who would be doing their presentations that they would speak with clarity. Pray that we as a conference will do that which God has and is showing us. Pray that the hearts of all those attending the meeting will be in tune with the Holy Spirit. Pray also for no technical hiccups throughout the meeting that would be held online.

Saturday, (Sept 11)Pray for the Nation: The first meeting of the 4th session of the 14th Malaysian Parliament will be held from September 13 to October 12, 2021. Pray that God will banish from the hearts of the Parliamentarians all selfishness and corrupt intentions. Pray that all the ministers of the new Cabinet and all the MPs will put aside their differences and strive to work together for the common good of the nation and the people. Pray that this government will be God-fearing, righteous, upright and competent enough to lift our nation out of this miry pit of a devastating health crisis that has resulted in a weakened financial situation..
