Reflection: PSALM 19: A TRUE JEWEL

Most Christians have met people who spend a great deal of time agonizing over the question, “Is there a God?” Still others spend as much time trying to prove that there is NOT a God. David’s answer was very practical – Look around you and SEE this world! In the birth of baby birds and other animals, in the blooming of the flowers, and the industrious flying of the bee, God’s hand is seen everywhere. Those that question that there is a God must always deal with the beauty and mystery of life.

David wrote, “Day after day they pour forth speech, night after night they display knowledge.” (Psalm 19:2) Yes, unless we deliberately deny what we see, the universe bears constant witness to the presence of God. Each plant and insect is like an incredibly small organic computer that has been programmed to function a certain way in nature. The heavens function with such mathematical precision that space crafts can be sent to where a planet or a moon is so that an orbit and landing can be accomplished. The unmanned spacecraft Galileo visited the planets, and many of the moons of the solar system. The trip took over two DECADES, yet that tiny craft arrived at each point exactly when it was supposed to.

Science can describe “what” happens in the universe or “how” it happens, but the question “why” must come from another area. For David and for those that will not be blinded by the god of this world, that other area is, of course, GOD.

After considering God’s creation, David then thought about the way that God deals with His people. Today, many people do not understand how God can be a God of Love and a God of Law at the same time.

Even more people do not understand how the Law of Moses and the various statutes of God fit in with the God of Love. David wrote, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple…” (Psalm 19:7) Then, in Psalm 19:11, David wrote, “By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward”.

The Law of God, the expression of God’s will is good! The problem comes when people do not understand the purpose behind the Law. Paul wrote that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. We will never win our way to heaven through the Law. Yet, that was never the purpose of the Law. The Law showed mankind what the perfect and righteous God requires. If the laws of God are obeyed, then a person will experience joy and peace. But of even greater value, the Law of God pointed to the fact that something else was needed before the door to salvation could be opened.

In Psalm 19:12, David asked a very important question, “Who can discern his error?” There are things that we do that are wrong and, yet we are so involved in the world that we don’t realize what we are doing. Why do we need the Law? The Law reveals what is sin in God’s eyes. What can we do about our sin? Nothing! Our only hope comes when we embrace the salvation offered through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Yes, Psalm 19 is a true jewel. It shows us God in His creation. It shows us the righteousness of God in His Law. It shows us our need for forgiveness, and it shows that the forgiveness we must have comes through the Good News message of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.

Prayer List: 25 – 26 Sept 2016

Sunday, (Sept 26) – Praise God that His glory fills the heavens, and that all creation bears His mark. Ask for forgiveness for the ways in which we have polluted and disfigured His creation. Pray that God will speak to us through His creation and give our hearts time to pause and listen and to wait on Him. Thank Him that day after day, He faithfully sustains us by His power. Pray that as we read His Word, the Lord will shine the light of His truth into our lives to show us the stumbling blocks in our paths, and eradicate sin and selfishness from our lives.

Monday, (Sept 27) – Pray that we at Wesley Methodist Church, Klang would be people who live a consistent lifestyle. Pray that we would not allow our faith to be compartmentalized, but instead, we would walk worthy of the call we have received from God. Pray that as we diligently meditate on the Word of God, we will be reminded of God’s love, grace and mercy throughout our lives. Pray that we would learn to place our complete trust upon God as we face our daily challenges.

Tuesday, (Sept 28) – Although the daily COVID-19 cases continue to be above the 10,000 mark, praise God that the daily recoveries have been surpassing the daily infections for most of last week. Praise God too that more states are able to move on to the next phases of the National Recovery Plan (NRP); that a flurry of more relaxed SOPs – from extended dine-in hours and travel bubbles initiatives to states transitioning to new phases of the NRP – has generated some cautious optimism that the country is heading towards some semblance of normalcy. Pray that the rakyat will not become complacent, thinking that the pandemic is over, but will continue to strictly follow all the precautionary measures, especially the wearing of masks and maintaining physical distancing in public.

Wednesday, (Sept 29)Pray for the Nation: Pray that God will bless and guide the new political administration in the nation under the leadership of the new PM and his new Cabinet. Pray that the members of this Cabinet will be determined to do their work with uprightness, competency, effectiveness and integrity, and that the Lord will establish the work of their hands with success and fruitfulness. Pray for God’s mercy and grace over our nation, that He will work through all the Members of Parliament so that justice, righteousness, peace, racial and religious tolerance and harmony may reign, and God’s will and His Kingdom purposes will come to pass for Malaysia.

Thursday, (Sept 30) – Pray for vigilance and proper planning for students and teachers as October 3, 2021 reopening of schools remains on schedule. Pray that parents will stay vigilant to protect the children as they get ready to go back to school and ensure that their children are quickly vaccinated before schools reopen in stages nationwide. Pray that the students will be vigilant in following all the SOPs and for God’s protection be upon them and the teaching and administrative staff in the schools. Pray for wisdom for the Ministry of Education to make the right decisions concerning the reopening of primary schools, as children below age 12 have yet to be vaccinated, and these children, especially the younger ones, have difficulty understanding and abiding by the SOPs.

Friday, (Oct 1)Pray for TRAC: Pray for all TRAC Churches that would be having their local church planning meetings. Pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance to be upon all churches as they discern God’s will for their respective churches in the Pandemic/Endemic. Pray for eyes to be opened, ears to be attentive and hearts to be receptive to God’s movement in the churches. Pray that the love that God so lavishly poured upon our lives will direct our hearts as we discern God’s plan for our churches. Pray that our TRAC Churches will live out the Great Commission which is to make disciples of all nations.

Saturday, (Oct 2)Pray for the World: Pray for the ongoing political turmoil in Myanmar and Afghanistan, as Myanmar is facing the prospect of on escalating civil war against the military junta, and Afghanistan’s health-care system is on the brink of collapse due to lack of funding. Pray for democracy to be restored in Myanmar. Pray that international funding for Afghanistan’s health-care system will not cease but will continue for the sake of the innocent civilians

Reflection: THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE

How would you describe your current experience as a Christian? Growing? Frustrated? Disappointing? Fulfilled? Freeing? Stuck? Struggling? Joyful? Defeated? Exciting? Up and down?

A LIFE NOT CENTERED ON CHRIST: Serving Jesus is not their top priority. They grow very little in faith and often live in frustration because they do not listen to the Spirit or trust Him to empower them to obey. They may go to church, but Jesus is not leading their life. They have invited Jesus into their life, but possessions, desires, and interests are not Christ-centered.

They might say: “I’m doing OK.” || “No one’s perfect.” || “I’ll get serious about Jesus one day.” || “I feel stuck doing the same sins over and over.” || “The Holy Spirit doesn’t feel real to me.” || “I don’t have much joy in my Christian life.”

A LIFE CENTERED ON CHRIST: These Christians have placed Jesus at the center of their life — their time, decisions, work, relationships, and everything else, are being directed by Him. It all belongs to Jesus. They are growing spiritually and experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit by faith. Possessions, desires, and interests are Christ-centered. They still make mistakes, but they’re quick to re-center their life on Christ through confession, trusting in God’s forgiveness and inviting the Spirit to guide them and empower them to obey.

They would say: “What I want most is to follow Jesus.” || “I can’t do this on my own, so I run to the Holy Spirit again and again.” || “When I get side-tracked, I’m quick to make God the center again.” || “Following Jesus is bringing me more and more joy.”

When you center your life on Jesus, you begin to experience amazing joy. Life becomes full of meaning and purpose. God begins to change you from the inside out. The best is yet to come. God desires to make your life more and more abundant each day, but to experience that you need to rely on the Holy Spirit by faith. Here are three faith steps, with suggested prayers, that will enable you to experience the power of the Holy Spirit throughout the day.

1. Express your commitment to Jesus each morning:
Dear Jesus, I want You in the center of my life and commit to serve and obey You through Your power. Anytime. Anywhere. At any cost. To do anything.

2. Live in the freedom of forgiveness:
Dear Jesus, I sinned against You when I (state specific sins here). Thank you for forgiving me through Your sacrifice on the cross. I choose to center my life on You again and life fully for You.”

3. Rely on the Holy Spirit’s power by faith:
I can’t do this alone. Empower me through Your Spirit to love You with my whole being today and to love others with Your love.”

Jesus is offering you an abundant, Spirit-filled life every single day. Take hold of that life by faith: keep Him the center, run to Him whenever you fall, trust Him for everything you need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:1-4).

BECOME FULLY ALIVE IN JESUS!

Prayer List: 18 – 19, Sept 2021

Sunday, (Sept 19) – Praise God for giving us the Holy Spirit. Pray that we will grow in our relationship with Him and get know Him as our Helper and Counselor. Thank God that the Holy Spirit is committed to guide us according to God’s truth. Since He will not override our will or force us to follow Him, pray that God will grant us the faith to relinquish control and give the Holy Spirit control of our lives. Pray that we will yield to the Holly Spirit’s leading and guidance that we may be filled to overflowing with His graces and live our lives in willing surrender to Him. Pray that the Spirit will keep us from anything that discredits the name of Jesus and lead us in the paths of righteousness.

Monday, (Sept 20) – Pray for all members and worshippers of Wesley Klang to remain present to one another as our physical church doors remain closed in the Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan. Pray that our church members will remain connected with one another although we are not able to meet physically. Pray that we will learn to remember one another in prayer. Pray that we would make time to connect with one another virtually and pray that the conversations we have with one another will indeed build one another up in the Lord.

Tuesday, (Sept 21) – Pray that our nation will be able to begin to recover from the pandemic. Pray that the health conditions of those affected by the COVID-19 virus will improve, especially those in the ICU and those who are intubated. Pray for those who have been discharged, and those suffering from the effects of prolonged hospitalization for COVID-19 that there will be facilities made available to help them recover to full health. Pray for wisdom for the government in introducing SOPs as the nation slowly reopens for more activities. Pray that the public will continue to follow the SOPs strictly, especially as the tourism industry is reopening, and people are going for local holidays.

Wednesday, (Sept 22)Pray for the Nation: Pray for God’s mercy and grace upon our nation during this challenging time. Pray for God to grant the government wisdom to make the right decisions to balance the COVID-19 infections and death rate that remains worrying, with the need to reopen more economic sectors as many people are suffering from Covid-induced job losses. Pray that the MOU signed by the Federal Government and some opposition political parties will achieve the desired results for political stability, reform and economic recovery. Pray that all politicians will focus on the urgent, vital national issues of bringing about harmony, prosperity and stability to the nation.

Thursday, (Sept 23)Pray for the World: Although earlier data showed that children are less likely to become seriously ill from COVID-19, healthy children have now been hit hard by the Delta variant of the virus. Praise God that many nations have started vaccinations for children aged 12 and older. Pray for wisdom for governments and policy makers to make the right decisions in nations that are apparently uncertain about vaccinating younger children, those who are below age 12.

Friday, (Sept 24)Pray for TRAC: Pray for all TRAC Churches that would be having their local church planning meetings.

Saturday, (Sept 25) – Pray that Christian parents will realise the importance and impact of parental role modelling, and they will be positive role models of Christlike character to their children. Pray that the next generation will not give in to the issues of narcissism or apathy, but that God will always be the center of their lives, and they will see the world with godly perspective and not out of their own self-centeredness. Pray that this next generation will constantly be reminded of God’s mighty acts in their lives and they will hold fast to their faith no matter what happens in the world.
