Reflection: WHAT’S THE PARABLE OF THE SHEEP AND GOATS ABOUT?

Is salvation based on works?

Because The Parable of the Sheep and Goats (Matthew 25>31-46) ties the sheep and the goats’ behavior to their eternal destiny, it’s easy to walk away assuming that our eternal destination rests on what we do or fail to do. But that’s not really the point Jesus is driving at.

The Gospel’s message is clear throughout Scripture that “all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). It is by faith, through grace, that we are reconciled to God.

We just can’t miss out on the important message that salvation should transform us into the kinds of people who serve their King by doing good for others. So, what can we take away from this parable? Here are four quick lessons we could learn from the story of the sheep and the goats:

1. The sheep didn’t know what they did

It’s impressive to realize that the sheep are surprised by this turn of events. They weren’t serving others to be noticed or to curry favor with the King. They were doing good because it was in their nature to care for others.

2. Little things matter a lot

The King commends the sheep for everything from feeding the hungry to clothing the naked. But in there, He recognizes something as simple as a drink given to the thirsty. The point is that there is no service too small for Jesus to remember.

3. Don’t leave good undone

The King’s interaction with the goats is the most sobering aspect of this parable. It’s one thing to celebrate the positive and kind things someone does. It’s another thing entirely to realize that the King is paying attention to opportunities to help others that we neglect to capitalize on. It’s a mistake to assume that becoming more Christlike is merely a case of stopping bad behaviors. The more like Jesus we become, the more our lives are poured out in service to others.

4. We have to put in the effort

So many of the kindnesses the King mentions are ones the sheep would have had to go out of their way to perform. No one just happens upon someone in prison and stops for a visit. You have to make a plan to spend time with someone in that position. If we want to be sheep, we’ll be on the lookout for ways to love people around us.

Becoming people who do good:

It’s by God’s grace that we are reconciled to God. There is absolutely nothing we can do to earn the privilege of becoming God’s children. But that doesn’t mean that what we do doesn’t matter. Jesus explained it to the Pharisees this way: “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit” (Matthew 12:33).

In the story of the sheep and goats, Jesus wants us to understand that our choices reveal the kingdom to whom we belong.

Prayer List: 9 – 10, Oct 2021

Sunday, (Oct 10) – Pray that every spirit of stubbornness, pride and disobedience, which are the marks of goats, be replaced in our lives with gentle, submissive and obedient spirits – the marks of sheep. Pray that we will take up Christ’s challenge to be more like Him, to be willing to pour out our lives in service to others, not in search of reward or payback, but simply because it is the loving thing to do, knowing that no service is too small for Jesus to remember. Pray that as sheep of the Shepherd, we will follow our Shepherd’s lead, and love others as He has loved us and given Himself for us, and that our choices will reveal the Kingdom to which we belong.

Monday, (Oct 11)Missions Month: Pray for the great needs of the migrants in our nation to be met. Pray for God’s guidance to be upon the migrant ministries in our midst. Pray that Klang Wesley’s involvement in the migrant ministry such as the EL-Shaddai Refugee Learning Centre would continue. Pray that God would raise up more Christian teachers to be salt and light to these children who are enrolled in the EL-Shaddai Refugee Learning Centre. Pray for the seed of the Gospel to be planted into the hearts of the migrants. Pray that they will be open to the message of Christ that is being shared to them. Pray that they will experience the love of Christ through the church.

Tuesday, (Oct 12) – Pray for the upcoming 2nd Local Conference of Wesley Methodist Church, Klang that would be held on 13th of October 2021. Pray that our leaders would be able to discern God’s work and movement in the life of the Church. Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon Rev. Paul Christie (District Superintendent of CD2) who would be presiding over the conference. Pray for unity among our leaders that together we may lead our church unto the path that God has crafted for us.

Wednesday, (Oct 13)Pray for the Nation: Pray for a peaceful resolution to the Melaka political crisis after the Chief Minister lost his majority in the state legislative assembly. Pray that the authorities will take the cue from the Sabah state elections and consider deferring the Melaka snap polls as the nation cannot afford another wave of COVID-19 infections. Pray that the Melaka State authorities will listen to the pleas of the people in the state, many of whom want the state elections to be postponed. Pray for wisdom for the Agong and the Federal government as to whether to call for an emergency order over the state and put in a caretaker government for the time being until the situation is safe to hold elections.

Thursday, (Oct 14) – The daily COVID-19 cases are dropping, the pandemic situation is improving, and more restrictions are being lifted. As the government has opened up interstate travel, pray that the people who are making travel plans will carefully follow all the SOPs implemented by the government. Pray also that the on-going vaccination programme among the teenagers above 12 years old will continue smoothly, and that those vaccinated will have no or minimal side effects from the vaccine. Pray also for kindergartens and child-care centres as they will open to facilitate parents who will be going back to work in their offices. Pray that the teachers and helpers will ensure all SOPs are strictly followed, and the centres will be safe environments. Pray that God will protect the little children, teachers and helpers.

Friday, (Oct 15)Pray for TRAC: We thank God that the pandemic has caused many individuals and NGOs from all walks of life to freely distribute food aid to all in need – pushing back the race and religion barriers through kindness and bringing some measure of healing to our multi-ethnic country. Let us pray for initiatives such as the new low risk Covid-19 Patients Quarantine Centres in Kuala Lumpur and in Penang operated by Crest Malaysia to help the B40 community. Pray for more of our TRAC Churches to be involved in these initiates.

Saturday, (Oct 16)Pray for the World: Pray for missionaries all over the world who are now adjusting to a new way of doing ministry or who may still be trying to figure things out. Pray that God will help them rest in Him. Pray that if there are feelings of guilt or uncertainty, God will turn those into times of seeking and abiding in Him. Pray that the Lord will reveal to them what He wants the focus in their lives and ministries to be right now, and grant them His peace that surpasses all understanding.

Reflection: “YOU WILL BE MY WITNESSES”

The Book of Acts starts with a kind of prelude pointing to the power of the Holy Spirit and the spread of the message of the Kingdom as far as the ends of the earth.

It begins with a quick recap of the facts of Jesus’ death and resurrection, including the command to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus promises they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes. Then, even as He is saying this, Jesus is taken up to heaven. Two angels appear to confirm that Jesus has gone to heaven but will one day return.

The promise of Jesus is that when the Holy Spirit comes, we will receive power to be His witnesses everywhere.

In the church we have many evangelism training programs and classes. But Jesus did not say, “When you finish this course you will be My witnesses.”

We have many words, scripts and formulations, but Jesus did not say, “When you get the words right, you will be My witnesses.”

The professional evangelists, those with the ministry gift of evangelist, often try to guilt the rest of us into doing evangelism. But Jesus did not tell us to witness from a place of guilt, or feelings of religious duty.

When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, then we will receive power and we will be His witnesses. This is a promise that, in some way, the Holy Spirit will use each one of us to “be witnesses”, that is to have the nature of a person who points others to Christ. Under the power of the Holy Spirit this will happen naturally (or supernaturally) out of our new nature.

For too long, the church has brought training program after training program to “equip” people to share faith- with little result. Instead, we need to focus our attention on waiting for the Holy Spirit, receiving the Holy Spirit, being baptised in the Holy Spirit. Then we will be witnesses.

I long to see a church filled with people so full of the Holy Spirit that they can’t help but be witnesses to the love of Jesus.

Prayer List: 2 – 3 Oct, 2021

Sunday, (Oct 3) – Pray for Wesley Klang that through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we would be witnesses for Jesus wherever God has placed us. Pray that we would be able to share the love of Christ through our speech, conduct and lifestyle. Pray that our actions will indeed point the people around us to Christ. Pray also that Wesley Klang will truly live out our lives as disciples of Jesus.

Monday, (Oct 4)Missions Month: Pray for the needs of the underprivileged indigenous community especially those who are unreached. Pray that those who have ventured into towns seeking employment would not be exploited. Pray for Christians to reach out to these people and help them. Pray for their hearts to be open to the Gospel message. Pray for God’s wisdom and guidance to be upon Wesley Klang volunteers who serve in the ministry of the Orang Asli / Orang Asal. Pray also for our OA Pastors that God will bless the work of their hands and bring growth to their ministry.

Tuesday, (Oct 5) – More than 400,000 cases of COVID-19 infection involving individuals under the age of 18 were recorded so far this year. Pray that the on-going vaccination programme implemented by the government for this group will ensure that all teenagers from the ages of 12 to 18 will be fully vaccinated as soon as possible, and that the teenagers will have no or minimal side effects from the vaccine. Pray that parents will provide support and encourage their children to adhere to all SOPs, especially when the schools reopen. Pray also that those who wish to make statements with regard to the vaccination programme for teenagers would verify their information with the relevant authorities as the spread of inaccurate information can cause confusion and doubts among parents.

Wednesday, (Oct 6)Pray for the Nation: Praise God that the COVID-19 situation in the nation is improving with a decline in the daily COVID-19 cases and the number of ventilated cases in the ICU. As the authorities prepare for transitioning from pandemic to endemic stage by end-October, pray that they will exercise much wisdom and caution when reopening interstate travel and the country’s international borders in order to revive the tourism sector, and also for the reopening of more economic sectors to boost the economy. Pray that the rakyat will do their part by remaining on the high alert and strictly following all SOPs so that we will not go back to square one.

Thursday, (Oct 7) – Pray that God will surround us with His love so that we may be encouraged and strengthened. Pray that He will grant us wisdom and understanding, and a thoughtful spirit. Pray that whenever we feel overwhelmed, anxious, weary or troubled in any way, God will guard our thoughts and show us His peace, His unfailing love and fill our hearts and minds with knowledge of His grace and faithfulness. Pray that we will choose to rejoice in the Lord, not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, in thanksgiving, we will present our requests to Him, and His peace which transcends all understanding will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Friday, (Oct 8)Pray for TRAC: Pray for our District Superintendent (CD2), Rev. Paul Christie. Pray for God’s strength and wisdom to be upon him as he chairs the Local Conferences of all the churches in Central District 2. Pray that Rev. Paul will indeed experience the sufficiency of God’s grace as he carries out all his conference duties. Pray for God’s favour and blessings to be upon him and his family as they seek to serve the Lord as a family.

Saturday, (Oct 9)Pray for the World: Wealthy nations are hoarding supplies of high-profile COVID-19 vaccine brands for booster shots to protect their populations from more virulent variants. Thus, poorer nations are turning to lesser-known vaccines, many of which have yet to receive World Health Organisation approval. Pray that the medical experts will be able to provide sufficient scientific evidence of the safety and efficacy for these lesser-known vaccines so that the populations of poorer nations will be able to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.
