Reflection: THE GLORY OF THE RESURRECTED CHRIST

Alpha and Omega, the living One, sovereign, almighty, conquering, loving, King. Revelation 1 gives us an astonishing vision of our resurrected Lord through the eyes of the Apostle John. Revelation 1:9-20 serves as part of the introduction to the Revelation to John. And as with any opening chapter, it introduces the theme of the book. But really, we only need look to verse 1 to learn this theme — Jesus Christ. John didn’t want so much to tell us about the end times. John wanted to tell us about who reigns over time. John didn’t want to tell us so much the identity of the antichrist. He wanted to tell us who has the power to defeat all evil and death. In short, God in Revelation wanted to “reveal” Christ. He wanted to show the resurrected Christ in all His glory. He wanted to show how the reigning Lord would be victorious in the end.

OK, but why? What is the reason for the revealing? Why would God want to reveal Jesus Christ to John? The answer: For His church. His church was being persecuted. Christians were suffering for Christ. They were even dying for Christ. This was the time of the emperor Domitian — “a man of Nero’s type of cruelty,” says one historian. John himself suffered in exile on Patmos because of this tyranny. So, in Revelation 1, Jesus revealed Himself as the beautiful, victorious, sovereign Christ to a suffering, dying, persecuted people of God.

You see the purpose! Christ revealed Himself so that His church would be comforted and gain strength for the mighty tests to come. And, though the letter was written to first century believers, I believe this same gift of the Revelation to John is for us today as well. Christ has given a picture of Himself to enable us to gain strength for a radical life given to Him today. Nothing will comfort us, nothing will give more hope, nothing will enable us to live entirely devoted Christian lives more than keeping a picture of the sovereign and triumphant Christ before us.

One could spend hours delving into the richness of the picture of the reigning Christ that is presented in Revelation 1. Meditate on what this would have meant for a first century church afflicted by the powerful, persecuting Roman government. Meditate on the significance of a reigning Christ for you. Look at the significance of Christ standing in the midst of the lampstands — which symbolize His church. Meditate on the fact that Jesus is with His bride. Christ is standing among His people — even as they are persecuted, burned, crucified. As John Piper states, “He moves among His lampstands, trimming the wicks and carving wax, breathing life back into flickering flames.” Look at the significance and symbolism of Christ’s appearance — His clothing, His hair, His feet, the sword in His mouth. Finally, end by looking at His face. Meditate on the glory shining therein. The glory of Christ. Our great King. Our Lion of Judah. Contemplate His power over time, His authority over death, His defeat of sin, His holiness.

It’s all there in Revelation 1. And when you do look at Him, as John did, be ready. We might and should cry out our helplessness. We might and should fall flat like John and like Isaiah and Ezekiel. Indeed, when God reveals Himself, we will realize our inadequacy, our sin, our powerlessness. Yet, that is exactly where God wants us. He wants us to look on Christ. Depend on Him. Trust in Him. Lean on Him. Gain strength from Him for the radical life to which He has called us. …

Never lose sight of Him.

Reflection: ON DISPLAY

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

Notice how carefully Paul puts works in the right place. You don’t obtain anything from God by working for it. You never deserve anything but judgment at His hand. If He gave us what we deserve, we would all end up in hell. No, we receive His grace, His mercy, His love. But these result in good works. That is the point. They are designed to produce good works. It is a marvelous manifestation of God’s ability.

The word workmanship is really the word “poem”. We are His poem. Perhaps it would be better rendered, “we are His masterpiece.” God is working out in our lives a tremendous exhibition of His wisdom, His power, His love, His life, His character, His peace, and His joy. He is teaching us, training us, bringing us along, applying the paint in exactly the right places, producing a marvelous masterpiece to be put on display. This is to result in good works: kindness, love, mercy, compassion, help to one another, meeting one another’s needs.

Paul says that God has prepared these works beforehand. I experienced an interesting illustration of this. One of our interns flew to Albuquerque with me. We decided, as the plane was landing, that we would have some prayer together. I hadn’t talked to him about this passage at all, but I was struck by the way he prayed. He said, “Father, thank You for the good works already prepared for us in Albuquerque, for the fact that they are waiting for us to step into them and experience them.” Sure enough, after we got to Albuquerque these began to unfold.

There was a missionary there from the Amazon region of South America who was discouraged and terribly upset, ready to quit the ministry. Through the ministry we had there he came alive and began to see again what God could do. He came to us with a light on his face and said, “I’m going back to my field completely revolutionized in my approach. Now I’ve learned how God operates.”

A young pastor was facing dissension in his church. He wanted some counsel on how to handle it. God enabled the Scriptures to speak to that situation and give him wisdom and guidance for it. All these good works had been prepared beforehand. All we did was step into them.

Do you have any idea how many good works God has prepared for you? They are waiting for you to enter into as you walk in faith and trust and dependence upon Christ. The situations are there, ready and waiting for you to step into. This is what God has called you to. As you do so, you become a vivid display of the greatness and the glory of God.

For your Reflection:

Before we step out from home, we usually think about how we look. Do we also think about God’s plan for us today; how He is going to display Himself through us today?

(RAY STEDMAN)

Prayer List: 16 – 17 October 2021

Sunday, (Oct 17) – Praise God that by His grace, He has re-created broken people like us to be His masterpieces, that we may honour Him each day by doing the works He has prepared in advance for us to do. Pray that He will guide us in how to best use our time, efforts and talents to reflect His love, compassion and goodness. Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower us daily to walk in the good works God has in store for us, and to be open to all that He would have us do. As He continues to work in our lives, pray that He will help us become more like Christ each and every day. Pray that every day our lives may be lived to serve God in word and deed to His praise and glory.

Monday, (Oct 18)Missions Month: We pray for all persons serving tirelessly behind the scenes of the Missions Committee. We are grateful for their willingness and heart for Missions. Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon them as they serve. Pray for God’s love to so fill their hearts that their confidence in doing God’s work stems out of the love that comes from God. Pray that the joy of the Lord will be their strength as they continue to do the work that they have been called to.

Tuesday, (Oct 19) – Pray that our church leadership and staff will be anointed with wisdom, discernment and understanding to be prepared for post-pandemic challenges to the church – primarily in the ministries and practices of the church. Pray that they will be ready for the digital impact on in-person attendance as more people might choose to engage online. Pray for wisdom to be able to build strong zealous fellowships as God’s people, while being “physically distanced”.

Wednesday, (Oct 20)Pray for TRAC: The District Conference of Central District 2 will be held tomorrow, 21 October, 2021. Pray for all delegates that would be attending this conference via zoom. Pray for our eyes to be opened to see what God is doing in the CD2 churches. Pray for our hearts to be grateful for all that God is accomplishing in our churches. Pray for wisdom to be upon our District Superintendent, Rev. Paul Christie as he chairs the conference. Pray that God would help us discern His will in the lives of the churches.

Thursday, (Oct 21) – As the daily COVID-19 cases generally continue to decline and with the easing of restrictions, pray that the rakyat will heed the plea of exhausted frontliners to stay vigilant and diligently follow all SOPs in the coming crucial few weeks. As the nation is moving into the endemic stage, pray that all Malaysians will be prepared to adapt to new norms and understand that the world will not be the same anymore. Pray that the rakyat will collectively come together as part of our social responsibility to embrace all the SOPs and guidelines set by the government, and adapt, adjust and accommodate these new norms in our lives.

Friday, (Oct 22)Pray for the Nation: Pray for peace to reign as partisan politicians ramp up their manoeuvrings and strategies as the nation draws closer to the next general elections. Pray for a new generation of national leadership made up of righteous men and women of integrity who can steer the nation with impartiality, sincerity, justice and righteousness. Pray for the emergence and growth of mature political leadership able and willing to work together for the sake and interest of the nation and the rakyat, instead of jockeying for position and power. Pray for political leaders who will be able to steer the country away from drifting into mediocrity, bankruptcy and inept governance.

Saturday, (Oct 23)Pray for the World: Pray for divine protection over the Christians left behind in Afghanistan who will become even more exposed to persecution. Pray especially for God’s protection over the women and girls. Pray that God will protect them from the suffering to come, and to strengthen them in their faith and they will stay strong in the Lord. Pray that the healthcare system in the nation will be able to sustain itself with international aid. Pray for evil to be pushed back, and for God’s supernatural conviction of sin upon the new administration that their minds and hearts will be renewed through the sovereign hand of the Lord.
