Pre-Recording Saturday & Sunday Worship Service – 3rd & 4th July 2021

Title: This, Then, Is How You Should Pray
Scripture: Matthew 6: 5 – 13
Speaker: Mr Stephen Cheah

Sermon Notes:

The background of this passage:

It is found in Matthew and part of the Sermon On The Mount, and is among the many different topics that Jesus spoke about. The teaching was aimed at the crowds, the many people from various backgrounds, ages.

Basic principles taught by Jesus:

  • It starts with “when you pray…” not “if you pray…” Praying is expected to be part of the norm. Spending time with your God, your Saviour, the Lover of your soul.
  • Do not be like hypocrites. Why are you praying? Do not show off / brag / boast. Be yourself! Prayer is between you and God. No one else needs to know.
  • You are not praying to some unknown god or being, but the Father – ABBA Father; a father-child relationship exists, not a stranger to stranger relationship. Father God knows you intimately and also wants you to know Him; His love for you is infinite and wants the best for you as His child
  • Do not say things for the sake of it. Don’t chant (repeating the same thing over and over). Do not labour over our requests
  • God already knows everything – nothing surprises Him – even before we ask. There’s nothing He does not know; and there’s nothing we can hide from him. Keep it simple and short.

Prayer must come from a genuine relationship between you and God, not out of obligation – a heart to heart conversation

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father

  • sets the context of praying; we are coming before a loving, heavenly Father

Who art in heaven

  • heaven is where He resides; literally and figuratively above all things
  • He is watching over us; He sees through all things even into our hearts and minds, nothing is hidden from Him; nothing surprises Him
  • He is not bound by time – we are time bound, He is not; He sees all of creation at one go

Hallowed be thy Name

  • God’s name is holy; it is to be consecrated (set aside); not to be taken in vain; so much so that some dare not mention/say/spell His name
  • it’s above every other name
  • His name gives life and brings death
  • we have authority in Jesus’ name

Thy kingdom come,

  • Jesus came and established God’s kingdom which is not earthly
  • all who believe in Jesus are citizens of this kingdom- it will continue to grow and nothing can stop it
  • it will last for eternity
  • the enemy Satan is still the ruler of this earth but he is a defeated foe and is subject to God
  • when Jesus returns He will establish a new earthly kingdom where there will be no more pain, sickness, suffering etc.

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven

  • God reigns Supreme in heaven – what God wants done in heaven will always be carried out
  • on earth, He chooses to give mankind free will
  • the battle rages between doing our will against denying ourselves to do God’s will; as believers, we have a choice whether to align our will with God’s will
  • our prayer is that God’s will be done, not mine (Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane)
  • ultimately God is still Sovereign and He is able get things done even if people choose not to cooperate

Give us this day our daily bread

  • we ask for our daily needs
  • it’s about each day – not tomorrow or the day after
  • it’s about needs not wants; what are our “needs”?
  • it’s not a shopping list
  • seek ye first the kingdom of God and the rest will be added unto you

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

  • hasn’t God forgiven us off all our sins?
  • God’s different roles as Judge and Father;
  • as Judge, He has already forgiven us of all our sins because of Christ’s death on the cross
  • as Father, He will not “let us go” if we don’t forgive others, mental torment (constant reminder)

And lead us not into temptation

  • “temptation” from the Greek work “peraismos” meaning an experiment, a trial, temptation
  • the plea is that God would not put us to the test; is this a right prayer to pray?
  • Jesus himself prayed at the Garden of Gethsemane “If it be possible, let this cup pass away from me” (Matthew 26:39)
  • the answer may be indeed we are not tested but, if indeed we are tested, God will provide us the strength to overcome it, a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13)
  • we are all being tested right now in what we going through. Do we believe that God is still in control? That He knows what He is doing or allowing to happen. Does He love us? If so, why are all these things happening?
  • God is still very much God. His Sovereignty is still unchanged. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who made man out of dust and breathed life into him – He is very much in control. Instead of asking “Why?”, perhaps the question should be “What are You Lord trying to teach us? Open our eyes Lord to see what You are doing and the opportunities you are creating for us to do good works to those around us.”

but deliver us from evil

  • or the evil one
  • as believers, we are all in warfare – spiritual warfare, whether we want to or not; the evil one sees us as his enemies
  • we seek God’s protection and deliverance through Jesus shed blood, death and resurrection
  • we are victors in Christ if we know how to affirm our identity and position in Christ

For thine is the kingdom , the power and glory

  • this phrase is missing from many of the earlier scripts and appears to be added later
  • acts as a summary to remind us of who this God is that we are making our request to

Structure of the Lord’s Prayer

  • Knowing who God is and worshipping Him; this could include praise and thanksgiving
  • Bringing our petitions before Him; acknowledging that we are dependent on Him and need to be cleansed of all unrighteousness

Prayer is not about bringing our petitions to God, or just talking with God. It is communion (not Holy Communion the Sacrament) with God i.e. being with God in His presence – spending time in His holy presence. An act and form of worship.

Reflection: THE MODEL PRAYER

Prayer is like breathing for a Christian. If Scripture is the bread of the Word by which the Christian feasts for his nourishment and strength, prayer is the oxygen that fills our spiritual lungs. The Christian exhales his needs and burdens and inhales in the sustaining and sanctifying grace of God. For the Christian, prayer is instinctive. A Christian doesn’t need to be taught to pray. To do so would be like trying to teach a baby how to cry.

How long can you live without oxygen? Not very long. How long can you live without prayer? Some of you are trying to find out.

Prayer is predicated (established), Jesus says, on the fact that God “knows what you need before you ask Him.” Jesus shows us that prayer is grounded in God’s sovereignty and goodness. He is not ignorant of our needs; He knows them before we speak a word.

The Lord’s Prayer is intended to be a model. It is an outline that functions as a template for our own prayers. We can take each petition, recite it, and then pray in light of our present circumstances. For example, as you pray for the advancement of God’s Kingdom, you may begin to pray for your church, several missionaries, or particular people groups. Or, as you pray for your daily bread, pray for a pressing financial need you are facing that you may be freed to devote yourself more fully to the Lord. When you are praying, “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,” ask the Lord to help you extend forgiveness to a friend who betrayed you.

Use each line of the Lord’s Prayer as a spark for your own prayer. Read the petition, then pray it back to God in your own words through your own circumstances. Martin Luther often encouraged doing this each day in private prayer. He usually began his time of prayer with the Lord’s Prayer, and he found that doing so sparked a consuming passion for prayer that can extend to a great length of time.

We must persevere in prayer long enough to push through the coldness of heart we frequently have in prayer. If the hypocrites in Matthew 6 prayed with vain, long-winded prayers, Christians today pray with such brevity and infrequency that we disobey the command to pray entirely!

You see, you must devote yourself to prayer for more than a few minutes before you really begin to pray. You have to get past the formalism, the coldness of heart, the dull affections for the Lord. We must persevere and persist in prayer long enough until our heart truly prays to the Lord. Prayer is not a duty to perform, but a means to enjoy fellowship with God. By prayer, we can rest in His love. Prayer is the means by which we commune with the Lord. Yet, as D. A. Carson said, “Many of us in our praying are like nasty little boys who ring front door-bells and run away before anyone answers.”

When you bend your knees in prayer, do not get up until you have truly prayed. Persist in prayer. Meditate on Scripture to warm up your heart. Pray through the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer. Just keep praying until you’ve prayed!

May the means of prayer bring oxygen to your soul. May it enliven you and cause you to yearn for more of the Lord. Perhaps today, you need to start breathing again. Prayer is a remarkable privilege and blessing for the Christian, a means by which we experience and know the fellowship we have with the Father through our union with Christ. Today, do not feel burdened with guilt over our lack of prayer—there is grace for you today! Instead, sense the wooing of the Holy Spirit, drawing you to the intimacy, depth, and love to be had in God through the means of prayer. Let us take up this means now as we pray together!

Prayer List: 3 – 4 July, 2021

Sunday, (July 4) – Praise God that Jesus gave us a model prayer to pray to our heavenly Father: how to approach God in prayer, the different conversation points we should have in our prayers, and how crucial it is to align our hearts with God’s heart. Even as many of us have committed the Lord’s Prayer to memory, pray that we will not merely pray the words He gave us, but more importantly to use each line as a spark for our own prayers, praying them back to God in our own words through our own circumstances. As prayer is obedience to what God says, ask the Holy Spirit to teach us not to tell God what to do, but rather, to listen carefully as He tells us what to do.

Monday, (July 5) – Pray that God would impress upon our hearts a desire for prayer. Pray that Wesley Klang would be a church that desires communion with the Lord. Pray that no matter what our circumstances are, we will not harden our hearts but that we will turn to God in prayer whenever we hear His invitation. Pray that as we commune with God in prayer, we will experience His unfailing love for us. Pray that our trust in God will grow as we spend time in prayer with our God.

Tuesday, (July 6) – As parts of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have been put under enhanced MCO from July 3-16 following the high infectivity rate and the threat of new and dangerous COVID-19 variants, pray that the public will take personal responsibility to adhere to the stricter SOPs. Praise God that with the opening of more vaccination centres, the nation is moving at a rapid pace to get as many immunised as possible. Pray that those living in the rural areas will be able to get vaccinated. Pray against adverse side effects from the vaccinations. Praise God for the white flag movement, and food banks organised by NGOs who are supplying groceries and other essentials to the needy. Pray that the rakyat will contribute in cash and kind to these organisations so the poor and needy will be sustained during this difficult time.

Wednesday, (July 7)Pray for the Nation: Pray that the government will heed the Yang di Pertuan Agong’s call to reconvene Parliament as soon as possible. Pray that when Parliament reconvenes, all the political leaders will put aside their differences and focus on the people and not on politics. Pray that all the political parties will unite to guide the nation through pertinent issues it is going through: to salvage the economy, and find pragmatic and flexible approaches to manage the lockdowns that are causing extreme economic damage, especially to the lower income groups; to remain steadfast towards expediting the vaccination of the rakyat and moving towards herd immunity quickly.

Thursday, (July 8) – Pray for the next generation during this time of the pandemic, that God will sustain them physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Pray that the children and youths will be able to benefit from their online classes. Pray that they will exercise self-control with regards to the internet, and refrain from spending too much time on online games and social media. Pray for relationships in the home – that children will choose to obey their parents, and parents in turn will discipline their children with loving authority and unconditional acceptance. As the next generation is suffering from “online fatigue”, pray for the children’s and youth ministries in our churches to come up with creative and innovative ways to engage with the children and youths so Jesus will be relevant in their lives.

Friday, (July 9)Pray for TRAC: Pray for all pastors in Trinity Annual Conference (TRAC). Pray for God’s wisdom and strength to be upon each pastor as they lead their respective churches. Pray that each pastor would be able to work together with their respective team of leaders in leading the church through the pandemic. Pray that God would guard their minds and hearts so that they will remain focused upon the call that God has placed upon their lives.

Saturday, (July 10) Pray for the World: Many international sporting events have drawn thousands of spectators who gather together in stadiums, with the majority not wearing masks or practicing physical distancing, and already there are spikes in the daily COVID-19 cases in some countries. Pray for wisdom for the organisers of such events to do the needful to control the spread of the virus, and for the spectators to exercise precautions to protect themselves at these events.

Reflection: 4 PRINCIPLES OF BIBLICAL STEWARDSHIP

There are four important principles about Biblical Stewardship we must understand:

1. The principle of ownership.

In the beginning of Genesis, God creates everything and puts Adam in the Garden to work it and to take care of it. It is clear that man was created to work and that work is the stewardship of all of the creation that God has given him.

This is the fundamental principle of Biblical Stewardship. God owns everything, we are simply managers or administrators acting on His behalf. Therefore, stewardship expresses our obedience regarding the administration of everything God has placed under our control, which is all encompassing. Stewardship is the commitment of one’s self and possessions to God’s service, recognizing that we do not have the right of control over our property or ourselves.

2. The principle of responsibility.

Although God gives us “all things richly to enjoy,” nothing is ours. Nothing really belongs to us. God owns everything; we’re responsible for how we treat it and what we do with it. While we complain about our rights here on earth, the Bible constantly asks, What about your responsibilities? Owners have rights; stewards have responsibilities. (Bill Peel)

We are called as God’s stewards to manage that which belongs to God. While God has graciously entrusted us with the care, development, and enjoyment of everything He owns, as His stewards, we are responsible to manage His holdings well and according to His desires and purposes.

3. The principle of accountability.

A steward is one who manages the possessions of another. We are all stewards of the resources, abilities and opportunities that God has entrusted to our care, and one day each one of us will be called to give an account for how we have managed what the Master has given us.

This is the maxim taught by the Parable of the Talents. God has entrusted authority over the creation to us and we are not allowed to rule over it as we see fit. We are called to exercise our dominion under the watchful eye of the Creator managing His creation in accord with the principles He has established. Like the servants in the Parable of the Talents, we will be called to give an account of how we have administered everything we have been given, including our time, money, abilities, information, wisdom, relationships, and authority. We will all give account to the rightful Owner as to how well we managed the things He has entrusted to us.

4. The principle of reward.

In Colossians 3:23-24 Paul writes: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

The Bible shows us in the parables of the Kingdom that faithful stewards who do the master’s will with the master’s resources can expect to be rewarded incompletely in this life, but fully in the next. We all should long to hear the Master say what He exclaims in Matthew 25:21: Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Master’s happiness!

As Christians in the 21st century, we need to embrace this larger Biblical view of Stewardship, which goes beyond church budgets or building projects, though important; it connects everything we do with what God is doing in the world. We need to be faithful stewards of all God has given us within the opportunities presented through His providence to glorify Him, serve the common good and further His Kingdom.

Prayer List: 26 – 27 June 2021

Sunday, (June 27) – Give thanks to God for our many blessings and acknowledge that all that we are, and all that we have is a gift from Him. In response to our generous God, pray that daily we will offer to Him all the facets of our lives, whether it be at home or at work, and we will seek to be patient, gracious, generous and kind to those we encounter. Pray that we will be faithful stewards for the Lord, and He will help us to honour Him in all the places where He has given us influence or authority. Pray that we will strive to make stewardship a way of life and place Him first in our lives by being more prayerful, more focused on loving and caring for our families and others in need, and being less preoccupied with material things.

Monday, (June 28) – Pray for Wesley Klang to be a worshipping church. Pray that God will help us to know that we are created to worship Him in our speech, conduct and in our being. Pray that He will help us to worship Him in the common routine of our daily lives and pray that we would never neglect time with God although we may be occupied. Pray that we would be intentional in seeking God through daily prayer and the reading of God’s Word.

Tuesday, (June 29) – The daily COVID-19 cases show no sign of abating with the numbers remaining above the 5,000 mark, and Selangor being the state with the highest number of daily new cases. Pray that the rakyat will continue to take personal responsibility to abide by the SOPs, and that the authorities will be vigilant in the enforcement of SOP compliance. Praise God that the immunisation programme is rapidly picking up pace and many more people are getting vaccinated every day. Pray for God’s protection upon the vaccination centres, for the vaccination process to be carried out smoothly and efficiently. Pray for safety for all the healthcare personnel and volunteers at the centres. Pray that the nation will be able to achieve herd immunity quickly so that life will return to normalcy.

Wednesday, (June 30)Pray for the Nation: With the federal government’s finances running low, and now that another RM40 billion has been pledged to alleviate the hardships caused by this latest round of lockdowns, pray for effective implementation of strategic initiatives, and for deliverance from a potential national financial crisis. Pray for more prudent financial management, even as the Prime Minister and his Cabinet make COVID-19 financial contributions through salary cuts. Pray for wisdom and courage for the government to make right decisions concerning aid for businesses and the public, including a blanket loan moratorium, an electricity discount and soft loans for the payment of salaries.

Thursday, (July 1) – Pray for the worship teams as they have to resort to pre-recording the worship each week. Praise God for their perseverance to do their best to serve the Lord in their ministry. Pray also for Brother Johnny Lim as he puts together all the various aspects of the worship services each week. Pray that the Lord will bless and sustain him. Pray for our people that they will not neglect worshipping God, and will give priority to worship Him on our weekly online worship services. Pray that in the quietness of our homes, we will be ministered to, and be blessed by the online services and we will grow in intimacy with the Lord as we gather to worship Him.

Friday, (July 2)Pray for TRAC: We commit all of TRAC District Superintendents (DSs) in prayer. Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon them as they oversee their respective churches in their districts. Pray that all our DSs will draw strength from the Lord as they attend to the various needs of their respective churches. Pray for God’s anointing to be upon them in their leadership. Pray that all our DSs will look to Jesus and imitate Him in their call and duty as a District Superintendent.

Saturday, (July 3)Pray for the World: Pray for the political situations in Myanmar and Thailand. Pray for a stop to the flow of arms from Russia to the military junta in Myanmar and pray that the junta will respect the results of the nation’s last election and release all the political detainees. Pray for Thailand as hundreds of people turned out last week to call for the government’s resignation, defying warnings from authorities about soaring COVID-19 cases in the nation. Pray for peace to return to both these nations.
