REFLECTION: MY DAD… A REFLECTION ON FATHER’S DAY

I’d like to share with you just a few of the lessons from my dad, about what I’m thankful for and that encourage me today as a father:

MY DAD WAS PRESENT. My brother and I had a busy schedule: Soccer, baseball, tennis, taekwondo, mathletes, geography bees, graduations, swimming, football, basketball…you name it, we did it! My dad also had a busy schedule: work, home projects, husbanding (not a real word). Yet somehow he was almost always there. When he couldn’t physically make it, he’d be present once he saw me next. “How’d it go” he ask, “Did you have fun?”. It’s carried into the present. “How are you? How’s the church going? The family?” These are not remarkable questions, but his consistency in just being there for me very much is.

MY DAD WANTED MY MOM TO FLOURISH. At times my folks argued, they cried, they had all the stuff all marriages have, but I always seemed to know my dad wanted to see my mom flourish and to experience what made her, her. This one is a big one for me! Fathers, help create an environment where your wife will flourish and where she can grow in herself. If she wants to go out, spend time with friends, go to a bible study, or just get a break from life, do whatever it takes to get her there. She is not the babysitter and she’s certainly not your servant. Modeling this Christ-like love for your wife will not only bring great joy to your home now but it will bless your kids for years to come.

MY DAD SAID SORRY. Most of the time he didn’t have to (usually because I was being a stubborn, adolescent bonehead) but when it was needed…well, he did. What this modeled for me easily remains one of the most helpful life lessons: not one of us is perfect and we all make mistakes. It helped pave the road that the Spirit traveled when he saved my heart. Dads, we’re going to make mistakes trying to raise our kiddos right; always apologize when you need to.

Ultimately, God, our heavenly Father, must be our hope and the One we strive to be like. I often ask myself, “How does God treat me?” and attempt to do the same with my boy. I also encourage you to remember that the entire Bible is the story of a Father’s pursuit of His children and creation. Therefore, whenever we read Scripture we can learn more about how to be better husbands, fathers, wives, mothers, children, etc. I also want to specifically address those who read about what I learned from my earthly father but don’t share in that experience. Take heart knowing that in all the areas that our earthly fathers can and may fail us, our heavenly One never will. He is with you always, loves you perfectly and has and will always do what will cause your greatest good…even when you don’t realize it. But isn’t that what being a kid is all about?
Blessed Father’s Day and God bless!

(VINCE GARVEY)

A PRAYER FOR BIOLOGICAL & SPIRITUAL FATHERS & GRANDFATHERS

Heavenly Father,
Shower Your blessings upon all biological and spiritual fathers and grandfathers.

Grant them wisdom to guide their children along right paths.
Grant them the strength to forgive when their children stray from those paths. Grant them perseverance as they provide for the needs of their families.

May Your love shelter them in times of need, and expand their capacity
for forgiveness, kindness and compassion.
You, who is Father of us all, hold all fathers in Your arms and
generous heart.

Amen.

Prayer List: 19 – 20, June 2021

Sunday, (June 20) – Today we celebrate Father’s Day. We remember and give thanks to the Lord for all fathers, both biological as well as spiritual fathers. Pray for God’s favor and blessings to be upon them. Pray that our fathers will look up to God as they lead and shepherd their respective families. Pray that fathers will walk closely with the Lord and by doing so, they may impart upon their children the importance of seeking first the Kingdom of God. Pray that God will grant all fathers courage and wisdom in all that they do in and for the family.

Monday, (June 21) – Ask God for forgiveness that the first thing on our lips in difficult circumstances is not always praise, but we allow fear and anxiety to take the place of faith in His ability as Lord over our lives. Praise and thank Him for the truth that there is nowhere we can go that is beyond the range of His protection, goodness, grace, mercy, power and comfort which surrounds us every moment of the day. Pray that God will strengthen in us the determination to continually praise Him, especially when life is difficult. Pray that He will grant us a new perspective of whatever circumstances we are in, and a fresh appreciation of His matchless peace as we draw closer to Him.

Tuesday, (June 22) – Even as the full lockdown in the nation has been extended to the end of June, pray that the public will exercise patience and vigilance despite experiencing “pandemic fatigue”, and they will continue to comply with all the SOPs. Pray that God will protect relationships in the home, and families will bear with each other in love. Thank God that the vaccination programme is moving faster and more people are coming forward to be vaccinated. Pray that the authorities will ramp up vaccinations as fast as possible, and that there will be no wastage due to last minute “no show”. Pray that in His mercy, God will curb mutations of the virus, and stop the pandemic from advancing.

Wednesday, (June 23)Pray for the Nation: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has called for Parliament to be reconvened as soon as possible. Pray that the government will heed the Agong’s advice to reopen federal and state legislatures so as to prevent a constitutional crisis. Pray that all political leaders will focus on the overall social, economic and political stability of the nation and not be obsessed with gaining political power. Even as many small and medium-sized enterprises are on the verge of closing down, pray for godly wisdom for the government as it reviews all measures and introduce a recovery plan to give more support for these businesses to weather economic challenges in the coming months.

Thursday, (June 24) – Pray for the Orang Asli children from the Raub Hostel who are presently in their homes and are unable to go back to the hostel because of the full MCO. Pray that they will remain safe and healthy. Pray that they will have a desire to continue to learn and will be diligent to attend the online tuition classes. Pray that they will have the initiative to look for internet connection near their homes so they will be able to attend the online classes. Pray against dropouts after the full lockdown when the OA students are allowed to go back to the Raub Hostel. Pray especially that the students will continue to be diligent in the spiritual disciplines and grow in their faith.

Friday, (June 25)Pray for TRAC: Pray for our TRAC Bishop, Rev. Joshua Khong. Praise and thank God for his leadership and ministry in TRAC. Pray that God will bestow upon him wisdom and courage as he leads the conference. Pray for God’s anointing to be upon him as he continues to preach God’s Word. Pray for God’s protection to be upon him and his family. Pray for his two children, Ruth and Sarah as they pursue their studies abroad.

Saturday, (June 26)Pray for the World: Israel has a new prime Minister and a new government comprising of a patchwork coalition of various political parties. Pray that all these political parties will work well together for the good of the nation. Pray that the new government will continue to maintain peace in the Middle East, and strengthen ties with the Arab states.

Prayer List: 12 – 13 June 2021

Sunday, (June 13) – As the number of daily COVID-10 cases has yet to dip below 4,000 and the number of daily deaths are still high, the government has extended the full MCO for another 2 weeks until June 28. 2021. Pray that the people will do their part to help break the chain of infection by conscientiously observing all the SOPs. Pray that the government will do its utmost to help small businesses so they would not have to close down because of the full MCO extension, e.g. instructing banks to extend loan repayment moratoriums until the situation has stabilised. Pray also that the vaccination programme will be speeded up so that the nation will be able to achieve herd immunity as quickly as possible.

Monday, (June 14) – Praise God that He has given us Jesus to be our Saviour, that He is the chief cornerstone of our faith, and we have been positioned in Christ and clothed in His righteousness. Thank Him for His unchangeable and unchanging Word which is the foundation upon which our faith must be anchored. Pray that the Lord will keep us ever watchful for the false teachings and doctrines that are flooding the church today, and that He will empower us to hold fast to the truth of His Word. Pray that He will help us to stand firm looking to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith and the only secure foundation upon whom we stand.

Tuesday, (June 15)Pray for the Nation: Pray for the political situation in the nation. Pray for divine wisdom and courage upon the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as he meets with the leaders of the various political parties. Pray for the Council of Rulers, for unity and wisdom, as the sultans meet tomorrow, June 16, that the Council will make wise decisions concerning the reinstatement of Parliament and the political future of the nation. Pray that God will grant us leaders of integrity who will look beyond just winning the next election, but who are committed to working towards finding solutions to the health, economic and social issues plaguing the country.

Wednesday, (June 16) – Ask God for forgiveness for the times when we have elevated ourselves above others who may not have the same heritage, background, social or financial status we have been granted. Pray that God will keep us humble before Him, that we may know and affirm that every member in the Body of Christ is equally important to Him, and each one has his/her specific role to play. As He has broken down every barrier that divides us, pray that we will strive to live together in perfect unity as a holy temple in the Lord, a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit

Thursday, (June 17) – It has been more than a year since Klang Wesley has been able to have physical face-to-face meetings. Pray for all the ministries that have been meeting online – the Cell Groups, Youths, Sunday School, Boys’ Brigade and Youth Baptism & Membership Class. Thank God that these groups have been able to meet online via Zoom. Pray that all the people will continue to grow and deepen in their faith despite not being able to meet physically. Pray especially for the Youths and Sunday School that the teenagers and children will not give up on these online meetings. Pray for those in charge of these meetings to find creative and interesting ways to conduct their respective meetings.

Friday, (June 18)Pray for TRAC: Bishop Joshua Khong has undertaken to connect with all TRAC pastors on a monthly basis by hosting online meetings, District by District, from June. The first round of online meetings have been fruitful. Pray that God will continue to do His good work in the life of Bishop Joshua, especially in his first year of leading TRAC from the helm. Pray that TRAC pastors may find these meetings beneficial as an avenue to share with fellow District pastors about their personal and church needs.

Saturday, (June 19)Pray for the World: USA, Canada and some nations in Europe are slowly reopening as the COVID-19 cases in these nations seem to be under control. Pray that the governments of these nations will continue to be cautious and alert and be ready to act quickly in the event of any new outbreaks. As many nations in Asia, Africa and South America continue to battle with increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases, pray that God will intervene and bring down the number of cases in these nations.

Reflection: ONE NEW MAN

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.” [Ephesians 2:19-22]

That is what God is aiming at in our salvation: a new people (“one new man”: “…and made in Himself out of the two, Jew and Gentile, one new man, thus producing peace” [Ephesians 2:15] ) that is so free from enmity and so united in truth and peace that God Himself is there for our joy and for His glory forever. That’s the aim of reconciliation: a place for God to live among us and make Himself known and enjoyed forever and ever.

The point is that God aims to create one new people in Christ who are reconciled to each other across racial lines. Not strangers. Not aliens. No enmity. Not far off. Fellow citizens of one Christian “city of God.” One temple for a habitation of God. And He did this at the cost of His Son’s life. We love to dwell on our reconciliation with God through the death of His Son. And well we should. It is precious beyond measure to have peace with God.

But let us also dwell on this: that God ordained the death of His Son to reconcile alien people groups to each other in one body in Christ. This too was the design of the death of Christ. Think on this: Christ died to take enmity and anger and disgust and jealousy and self-pity and fear and envy and hatred and malice and indifference away from your heart toward all other persons who are in Christ by faith–whatever the race.

If we want the meaning and the worth and the beauty and the power of the cross of Christ to be seen and loved in our churches, and if the design of the death of His Son is not only to reconcile us to God but to reconcile alienated ethnic groups to each other in Christ, then will we not display and magnify the cross of Christ better by more and deeper and sweeter ethnic diversity and unity in our worship and life?

(JOHN PIPER)

Meditate
Is there any person that you think does not deserve God’s gift of forgiveness and mercy? Is there anyone that should be excluded from His family?

It’s important for us to remember that we have been included into God’s family… not because of our talent, goodness or background. This same inclusive spirit should flow from us. Knowing that we have received such incredible mercy should motivate us to reach those who do not look like, smell like, sound like or act like us. This is what Jesus did.

Apply
Ask Jesus to open your eyes to people who are very different from you. Ask Him for a word or an act of kindness that you can approach that person with. Be inclusive like Jesus.
