God Gives A Rainbow

The storms had stopped. The waters had receded. Noah’s ark rested on a summit of the Ararat mountain range. Thoughts must have raced through Noah’s mind after the ordeal was over: is this going to happen again? What can I do to stop it? However, God made a covenant—a sacred agreement—between He and mankind. God told Noah in Genesis 9:13-15: “I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life.” When man saw the rainbow, the result of returned sunlight reflecting off water, he would know that, unlike that great flood years before, God stopped the rain. He keeps His Word. He remembers His covenant.

God still keeps His covenant with man today—and He still gives us rainbows after difficulties. Little reminders He is with us, He is mindful of us and as a result, He will see us through.

When you come through difficult times, look for God’s rainbow. That’s not to say that we always notice them or if we do, that we appreciate them. But they are there. Perhaps it is the rainbow of the good times spent with a loved one who has passed away. Or, perhaps the rainbow of a valuable lesson learned after a difficult mistake. It may be a better appreciation for what health we do have after a time of sickness. Or, even with the prospect of death, there is the rainbow of His presence with us (Psalm 23), and certainly the rainbow of a reward in heaven. These rainbows—small and great— remind us the covenant God has made with those who are His.

The apostle Paul knew just how needed these rainbows were in his life, and he tried to relate their need in the lives of Christians. He stated in Romans 8:29: “For God knew His people in advance, and He chose them to become like His Son, so that His Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” Then Paul concludes that same inspiring chapter with the following, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?… No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35, 38-39).

He also wrote these words of encouragement in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Through these passages and many others, the Christian is to remember he is in a covenant with God, and God keeps His Word.

So, remember while going through the various hardships of life that after every storm, God always gives a rainbow. (MARK MCCRARY)

Prayer List: February 21, 2021

Sunday, (Feb 21) – Praise and thank God that He is our covenant-keeping God who is faithful and who will do what He promised to do. Pray that we will take time to meditate on His promises, to put our faith in Him and His promises, and to pray His promises over our lives, our families, and difficult circumstances we are going through. Pray that we will fix our eyes on the Lord at all times, so that we may retain hope and joy in the midst of every storm of life. Rainbows are a reminder that God is with us and that His promises will never be broken. Hence, when we see rainbow in the sky, pray that we will remember to thank God for His faithfulness and unfailing love.

Monday, (Feb 22) – Pray that we would have a meaningful time of LENT as we reflect and ponder on the life, ministry, sufferings, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pray that this LENT would be a time whereby we as a church would return to the heart of God. Pray that we would truly understand how undeserving we are of God’s forgiveness and yet God forgave us and showers us with sufficient grace as we face our daily challenges.

Tuesday, (Feb 23) – Pray for the Nation: Pray that God will bless the righteous men and woman whom He has set apart to be our national and state leaders, and that He will protect and shield them from all harm. Pray that God will grant them wisdom and guidance as they serve the nation. Pray that God will eradicate all forms of racism, divisiveness and fragmentation, and extremism from our nation from among the leaders and the rakyat. Pray that God will restore and rebuild our nation where truth, righteousness, justice, equality for all, racial harmony and religious freedom will prevail.

Wednesday, (Feb 24) – Praise God for His mercy in the battle against Covid-19: that the number of recoveries of Covid-19 cases are generally outpacing the new cases; that the vaccination programme will be rolled out on February 26, 2021; that more businesses are slowly being opened to boost the economy. Pray for wisdom for the government to balance lives and livelihoods. Pray that the public will not let their guard down but continue to follow all the SOPs until the health authorities give the green light that the pandemic is over. Pray also for God’s protection upon the students who are in the midst of the government examinations.

Thursday, (Feb 25) – Pray for the World: It has been almost a month since the military coup in Myanmar. Pray that democracy will be quickly restored as nations around the world are putting diplomatic pressure upon the military regime. Pray that God will protect the protestors who have taken to the streets, that violence will not escalate as at least one protestor has been killed. Pray also for God’s provision upon the people, especially the poor, as the prolonged coup situation has made daily survival a challenge. Pray for God’s mercy that the Covid-19 situation will be under control, and not add to the misery of the people.

Friday, (Feb 26) – Pray for TRAC: Pray for the new Executive Board members for this new quadrennium (2021-2024). Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon them as they make crucial decisions in a time such as now. Most importantly, pray that the Executive Board members will have a deeper and closer walk with God. Pray that each one of them would be able to discern God’s heart for the Trinity Annual Conference.

Saturday, (Feb 27) – Pray that God will protect Christian leaders and pastors from the schemes of the enemy, and for them to offer their hearts to God daily. Pray that the Lord will take them to new depths in Him, and they will be filled with a deep hunger and thirst for righteousness. Pray that God will grant leaders supernatural grace and power to combat all temptations in the strength of the Holy Spirit. Pray that they will have the strength of Joseph to take drastic measures to avoid temptation. Pray that leaders will always walk in humility, authenticity and accountability before God and men, will walk in the fear of God, and choose from the beginning to stand against the devil and glorify God.

Pre-Recorded Worship Service – 13th & 14th Feb 2021

Title: Running The Race In 2021 & Beyond
Scripture: Hebrews 12: 1 – 3
Preacher: Dato Dr Daniel Ho

Summary Notes:

Hebrews 12:1 says: “…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…”

How can we run the race well in 2021 and beyond?

1. Encouragement to receive (v. 1)
    * From the saints of old (Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:11)
    * From the people of God today (Heb. 3:13)

2. Entanglements to guard (v. 1b)
    * Not just money, sex and power
    * Other common entanglements to watch out for:
o Resentment and anger (Col. 3:13)
       o Guilt and shame (Rom. 8:1, 2)
       o Anxiety, worry or fear (Mt. 6:25, 28-30; Phil. 4:6, 7)
o Disappointment or disillusionment (Ps. 42:5)

3. Example to follow (v. 2a)
    * Jesus as our example
o He sees beyond the cross to the joy (v. 2b)
          > “…who for the joy set before him endured the cross…”
o He is unashamed in what He goes through (v. 2c)
          > “…scorning its shame…”
       o He endures the opposition (v. 3; Jas. 1:4)

Questions for discussion:
1. Share an encouragement from Scripture you have received as well as encouragement from someone in your cell group. How has that inspired you in running this race of life well?

2. Was there a particular entanglement you have wrestled with in your life and how did you overcome that? What would you advise people today?

3. How has Jesus’ example spurred you on in this journey and race of life in 2021 and beyond? Share one aspect you will always hold onto throughout your life.

Fix Your Eyes On Jesus

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

We are “surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1). That does not simply say that people who have died and gone on to heaven are looking down on us from above. It means that these people are saying something to us, they are testifying to us, they are witnesses in that sense. Their lives are saying that we ought to lay aside every weight, i.e., whatever hinders faith. You never say, “Yes” to Christ without saying, “No” to something else!

“And the sin that so easily entangles.” What is that? That is unbelief. That is the failure to take revelation seriously. Then, what? “Run with perseverance”, with persistence, keeping on no matter what happens. How? By “fixing our eyes Jesus”, that is the answer. The others we read of in the Scriptures can inspire us, challenge us, and some of the men and women of faith who have lived since these days can do the same. I read the life of Martin Luther — what a challenge he is to me; and of John Wesley, and D. L. Moody, and of some of the recent martyrs of faith, Jim Elliot and others. How they have challenged my life and inspired me to make a fresh start; to determine anew to walk with God, and to follow their example. They challenge us to mobilize our resources, clench our fists, set our jaws and determine that we shall be men and women of faith. But if that is our motivation, we shall find that we soon run out of gas. It all begins to fade and after a few weeks we are right back in the same old rut.

The secret of persistence is in this phrase, “fixing our eyes on Jesus”. Look at these men and women of faith, yes, but then look away on Jesus. Why? Because He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. He can begin it and He can end it, complete it. He is the Pioneer, He has gone on ahead. He is also the Perfecter of faith. He Himself ran the race. He laid aside every weight, every tie of family and friends. Every restraining hand He brushed aside that He might resolutely walk with God. He set His face against the popular sin of unbelief and walked on in patient perseverance, trusting the Father to work everything out for Him. He set the example.

But there is more than example in this phrase; there is empowerment. We are to fix our eyes on Jesus because He can do what these others cannot do. They can inspire us, but He empowers us. Moment by moment, day by day, week by week, year by year, if we learn to look to Him, we find strength imparted to us, because He indwells us! That is the secret.

You can find strength to venture out and start this life of faith today in Him. You also discover strength to continue. He is not “up there” somewhere. He is within us, by faith. If we have received Jesus Christ, He dwells within. He has entered into the sanctuary, into the inner man, into the place where we need strength, and is available every moment for me. Therefore, in Christ, I have all that it takes to meet life. (RAY STEDMAN

Prayer List: February 14, 2021

Sunday, (Feb 14) – Pray that God will help each of us run with perseverance the race that He has set before us and to finish that race well with His help. Pray for grace and focus to keep the faith and the teaching that He has entrusted to us, and that we will pass it on faithfully to those in the next generation who can teach others also. As this race is a life-long marathon, there will be times when we will be exhausted, tempted sorely to give up. Pray that in those moments, the Lord will help us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, and He will strengthen us to never give up until we finish the race that has been marked out for each of us.

Monday, (Feb 15) – Praise God that despite all the restrictions for Chinese New Year celebrations this year, many in the Chinese community are still able to celebrate the festival, albeit on a much smaller scale. Praise God that family members who cannot meet physically are able to connect via zoom, and pray that these online gatherings will help cement family ties. Pray that Christians will use this season as an opportunity to connect online with family members, relatives and friends who do not know Christ. Pray that the Lord will grant them wisdom and boldness to speak the truth of the Gospel and the hope we have in Christ, a message of relevance in this time of uncertainty and anxiety.

Tuesday, (Feb 16) – Tomorrow, February 17, 2021, is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the season of Lent. As we enter into this Lenten season after a year of uncertainty and upheaval, and as the pandemic continues to rage around us, pray that we will put our faith in Christ, choose to consciously disengage ourselves from the world, and carve out time to spend with Him. Pray that the Lord will help us align our hearts to His heart, so loving and following Him will truly be our first and most important priority. Pray that He will help us grow into a closer and more intimate relationship with Him, and be spiritually renewed as we spend daily time in His presence this during this Lenten season.

Wednesday, (Feb 17) – More than 20,000 of the nation’s Covid-19 patients who are considered low-risk by a Covid-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) are currently under home quarantine. Pray that these patients will strictly follow all the SOPs to prevent infecting family members living in the same house, and that God will protect them from the virus. Pray that the public will take responsibility to adhere to the SOPs, especially during this Chinese New Year season, as each day many people are arrested for various MCO violations. Pray that no new clusters will emerge during this festive season, and that there will be no spikes in the daily Covid-19 cases in the days to come.

Thursday, (Feb 18) – Pray for the World: Pray for Myanmar as there are large scale demonstrations by people to protest against the military regime that staged the coup. Pray that the police will not use violence against the protestors. Pray that UN sanctions will not harm the innocent civilians, but will have an impact on the policies of the military leaders. Pray that the UN actions will be effective in bringing about positive changes. Pray for the people’s needs, especially the poor, as banks, markets, and services have been disrupted, and many day-to-day necessities, including rice, have increased in price.

Friday, (Feb 19) – Pray for TRAC: Pray for the TRAC Board of Worship & Music. Pray that the Board under the leadership of Ms Juwita Suwito will be able to come up with resources that will be helpful for all the local churches in TRAC. Praise God for the Lent Meditations booklet that was produced by the Board, and pray that this booklet will be used widely in all our churches. Pray that the Lent Meditations will be a means where people can use to draw near to God.

Saturday, (Feb 20) – Pray for the Nation: Pray that God will remove all corrupt, unjust and selfish political leaders, and raise up leaders who will build unity, righteousness, justice, and prosper the nation. Pray that God will release a spirit of compassion and generosity upon the government to table policies that will help to raise the standard of living for the poorer sector of society. Pray also for wisdom for the government to handle the problem of Covid-19 infections among the foreign workers.
