God Is God Almighty

As a child, there is no hesitation in asking our parents to provide for our needs and wants. God wants us to come to Him in the same way. In Genesis 17:1-8, God calls Himself El Shaddai, which means “God Almighty,” to Abraham.

El is another name that is translated as “God” and can be used in conjunction with other words to designate various aspects of God’s character. Another word much like Shaddai, and from which many believe it derived, is “shad” meaning “breast” in Hebrew. This refers to God completely nourishing, satisfying, and supplying His people with all their needs as a mother would her child. Connected with the word for God, El, this denotes a God who freely gives nourishment and blessing, He is our Sustainer.

God is a loving God that wants to care and provide for His people. We must understand that our prayers are not a burden to God. The same way a parent celebrates their child coming to them for help, God wants to hear our prayers. He wants to lift our burdens.

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

If we begin to understand that God is our Sustainer, then we will pursue a relationship with Him daily. We will understand that we are not walking through struggles alone. Each day our Heavenly Father goes before us. A verse from Hillsong’s song “At the Cross” says it best:

“You go before me.
You shield my ways.
Your hand upholds me.
And I know you love me.”

For your Reflection:

• How does your view of God compare to the description of El Shaddai?

• What is one way you need God to sustain you right now?

• What is one way you can encourage yourself and others by understanding God is our Sustainer?

Prayer List: January 24, 2021

Sunday, (Jan 24) – Praise God that He is sufficient to strengthen us to handle whatever each day brings. Pray that He will comfort us with the truth that He is El Shaddai, the all-powerful God, that nothing is too hard for Him, and we can be confident that He is able and will work all things together for our good. As the world experiences one of the most challenging times in human history, because of the deadly pandemic, pray that we will depend more on God and less on personal strength and wisdom. Pray that we will experience Him as the All-Sufficient God who will always make a way for those who put their trust in Him.

Monday, (Jan 25) – The financial budget 2021 for Klang Wesley was presented last weekend. Pray for a good response from our church members to give cheerfully. Pray that the church leaders and heads of committees and organisations will use the finances wisely to build up God’s Kingdom both within and without the church. Pray that we will pledge not only our finances, but also our time, our talents and our lives to God. Pray that during this season, we will give generously of our resources to help those in financial need during this pandemic, and that we will also give of our time to encourage and comfort those who are experiencing loneliness because of social isolation.

Tuesday, (Jan 26) – Pray for the Nation: In the light of the declaration of the national emergency from 12 January to 1 August, 2021, persevere in prayer for the cleansing of the spiritual atmosphere in Christ’s mighty Name, that He will dispel the darkness in the unseen realms of principalities and powers and bring His light, hope and peace to our nation. Pray that His light will expose hidden motives, and cause human darkness and demonic agents to fail and flee in Jesus’ powerful name. Pray that the Lord will defeat every evil plotting of extreme, divisive and selfish partisan politics fed by the lust for power and control.

Wednesday, (Jan 27) – As all states are now under MCO 2.0 except for Sarawak, pray for the restrictions to have a positive impact in bringing down the spread of the virus, With restrictions in interstate and inter-district movement having been fully implemented, pray that the rakyat will willingly do their part to quickly bring down the daily numbers of Covid-19 infections. Pray that the public will be patient, vigilant and responsible despite “pandemic fatigue”. Pray that God will continue to strengthen the frontliners with resilience and protection as they are stretched thin from the influx of patients.

Thursday, (Jan 28) – Pray for the youths’ and children’s ministry in our church. As the youths will be re-starting their Cell Groups, pray for God’s guidance upon the Cell Leaders and Assistant Cell Leaders as they lead their respective Cell Groups. Pray that the youths, especially the younger ones, will be able to build good relationships with God and each other through the Cell Groups, and it will be a safe space for them to share their lives and needs. Pray for the Sunday School as the children continue to meet for online lessons, for good partnership between the teachers, children and parents. Pray for everyone to be flexible and to remain resilient in this time of uncertainty.

Friday, (Jan 29) – Pray for TRAC: The Wesleyan Community Methodist Church was constituted as a Local Conference on January 10, 2021. Praise God for the inclusion of this church into the family of Trinity Annual Conference (TRAC). Pray that indeed this church will be a beacon of light to the community around them. Pray that the church will remain faithful to the commission of our Lord Jesus, which is to make disciples.

Saturday, (Jan 30) – Pray for the World: Praise God for a smooth transition of power in the inauguration of the 46th President of the United States of America. Pray that the new President and Vice President will lead the nation back to the godly values upon which the nation was founded, and for the people to return to the ways of the Lord. Pray for a spirit of forgiveness and unity upon the people so that the anger and bitterness caused by the Presidential election will be resolved, and the new government will be able to move forward in rebuilding the nation.

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide

I struggle with the idea of Abraham willingly sacrificing Isaac…the thought makes my stomach turn and my mind spin. It’s unnatural. It’s cruel. Because let’s face it, no one likes to read or talk about sacrifices. And even though it is central to the Gospel message, we don’t really like to talk about sacrifice… much less make it personal. Yet personal is right where God goes. Abraham treasured Isaac. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, WHOM YOU LOVE, and go to the region of Moriah.” (Genesis 22:2). Seriously, could God have gotten any more specific? Your son… Your only son… His name is Isaac, just in case you’re confused. You know, the son you love….yeah, that’s the one.

God called Abraham to sacrifice his Isaac…and He calls us to do the same. Whatever the “Isaac” is in our lives, nothing or no one should ever take the place that is only reserved for God in our hearts.

WHY? Because God knows that humans or “earthly things” are poor substitute gods. Only God can fulfill our needs. But in order for us to know this truth, we must be willing to walk up the mountain of obedience…our own “Moriah”, willing to “sacrifice” in our hearts what we love more than God. Because we have all fallen for the lie that we know what’s better for us than God does.

We struggle in our walk of obedience because at the heart of the matter, we don’t trust God can provide. So many times we think we know what’s best for us. We fail to walk in obedience to what God calls us to do because we don’t trust Him to be faithful and trustworthy. We fear He won’t provide. We fear He won’t come through for us. We fear our obedience will cost us too much because there is some sort of sacrifice involved. We settle for the guy or girl in front of us because we don’t trust that God can provide anyone better. We settle for the easy so we don’t have to trust in the difficult.

So what is God calling you to sacrifice?

Maybe, just maybe there is something better for you on the other side of that sacrifice. For some of you, it may be a better situation…a new job, a healthier lifestyle….or a stronger relationship with God. One thing we do see in this story is that Abraham had learned to take God at His word. God spoke and Abraham obeyed….even when he didn’t understand. Even when the plan wasn’t clear. Abraham trusted that God would live up to His name: Jehovah-Jireh…“The Lord will provide”. “We will worship and then WE will come back to you.” (Genesis 22:5). Abraham didn’t know how, but he placed his trust in the Lord and walked forward in obedience. The Lord will provide…

Now before you get discouraged and say “I could never trust God like Abraham…” Realize Abraham, like all of us, was a work in progress. Remember Hagar and Ishmael? Yeah, Abraham didn’t trust God fully in that situation and the result included pain for everyone affected by his disobedience and distrust. Sin has a way of doing that…affecting the innocent.

YET…God is faithful and used the opportunity to grow and refine Abraham’s faith in the process. Through the consequences of Abraham’s disobedience he learned the valuable lesson of trusting God to provide.

I don’t know what you’re walking through right now, but I want to encourage you with this truth…. God’s name is Jehovah-Jireh…“The LORD Will Provide”…let’s take Him at His name.

God’s name is not past tense, it’s future tense….He WILL provide. And He did on an old wooden cross over two thousand years ago. The Lamb of God, not a ram caught in a bush, but a Savior….a Rescuer who willingly became the sacrifice for our sins so that we might have forgiveness and freedom through Him.

Now that is something to be thankful for! (ANGELA PERRITT)

Prayer List: January 17, 2021

Sunday, (Jan 17) – Pray for the Orang Asli (OA) students that as they will be returning to the Raub Hostel tomorrow, God will grant them protection from the Covid-19 virus. Pray that they will be able to successfully apply for travel permits from the police so their travel back to the hostel will be unhindered and smooth. Pray that these students will be able to adapt well to the online tuition provided by Christian tutors. Pray for wisdom, strength and God’s divine guidance for the warden and OA wardens as they take care of the students. Pray that God will individually touch and walk with every OA teenager in the hostel that they will grow up as men and women of God.

Monday, (Jan 18) – Praise God that He is our faithful Provider, that He has always provided what we needed, and always knows what our real needs are, better than we know. Pray that we will learn to trust Him more in every situation, and to trust in His ability and not our own. Pray that He will teach us to see difficulties in our lives from His perspective, that He is using difficulties and delays to perfect and develop our trust in Him. Although we do not always understand when things do not work out the way we expect, pray that we will always trust that God will never fail to provide for our needs in His time and in His way.

Tuesday, (Jan 19) – Schools are scheduled to reopen tomorrow, January 20, 2021 for examination classes, e.g. the Form 5 & Form 6 classes. Pray that all the students and teachers will abide strictly to the SOPs, and for God’s protection upon them, that they will stay healthy. Pray also for the rest of the students who will be continuing with online classes. Pray that God will provide for the poorer students who do not have laptops/computers so they will be able to join the online classes. Pray especially for the teachers as they conduct these online classes, for wisdom and creativity, and for the students to get used to the new normal of studying, and that they will benefit from these online lessons.

Wednesday, (Jan 20) – Pray for the Nation: Pray that God will expose the political leaders whose personal interests matter more to them than the well-being of the nation, Pray that the leaders will truly and sincerely adhere to their goals of mitigating the Covid-19 numbers in their all-out efforts to do so, and not short-change the rakyat by focusing on their own power struggle agendas. Pray for wisdom for the government to find solutions and measures to counter the pandemic-related financial stress which would subsequently have an adverse impact on the people’s mental health unless quick measures are taken to address it.

Thursday, (Jan 21) – The new MCO will bring more job losses, and the closure of businesses, and this will lead to anger, anxiety and depression, which will likely result in a rise in suicides due to social isolation, and increased domestic violence. Pray that the public will cooperate with the authorities during this lockdown, and by God’s grace, the number of daily infections will go down before the situation deteriorates further. Pray that the rakyat will understand the challenges and trials faced by the frontliners, and will not make the situation worse by defiantly flouting the SOPs. Pray that God will continue to sustain the frontliners, and grant them physical, mental and emotional strength, and protect them and their families from the Covid-19 virus.

Friday, (Jan 22) – Pray for TRAC: Commit to the Lord our various District Superintendents. Pray for God’s strength and wisdom as they lead the various churches under their respective districts. Pray that they will be able to manage their time well as they will soon enter into a season of Local Conferences, and eventually the District Conferences. Pray that God will bless their ministries and their families.

Saturday, (Jan 23) – Pray for the World: The pandemic death toll has exceeded 2 million people worldwide, the daily numbers of Covid-19 infections continue to soar in many nations, and health-care systems all over the world are collapsing. Pray that God will grant wisdom and guidance to the governments of the world’s nations to deal with the situation. Pray that people worldwide will turn to Christ and find hope in Him as they struggle with the devastation of the pandemic.
