Prayer List: November 22, 2020

Sunday, (Nov 22) – Praise God for His loving care over us, and His promise that He will always be with us. Pray that He will increase our faith so we will turn all our cares over to Him and let Him have complete control of our lives. Pray that Jesus will be enough for us to keep our souls contented, tranquil and quiet like a child in its mother’s arms. Pray that our Father will help us to seek contentment in everything we do; and when things do not work out the way we want, we will still find contentment in Christ. Pray that we will learn to rely on God’s promises and Christ’s power to stay contented whatever our circumstances or situations.

Monday, (Nov 23) – Hospital beds for Covid-19 in the Klang Valley were significantly increased after the recent surge in new cases; and health authorities opined that it will be weeks or even months before the Helath Ministry’s target of an infectivity level of below 0.5 can be achieved. Pray for wisdom for the health authorities and government to put together proper public health measures, and for all individuals to comply with the strict rules and SOPs, so that the target of a 0.5 infectivity level will be achieved as soon as possible. Pray also that employers, especially those in factories and construction sites, will protect their businesses by taking strict measures to ensure that all their workers are free of Covid-19.

Tuesday, (Nov 24) – Pray for the Nation: Pray that that the Holy Spirit will preside over the Parliament sittings so that justice, righteousness, responsibility and accountability will be restored in the nation. Pray that as the MPs debate over Budget 2021, they will put aside personal agendas, differences and obsession with power, and focus on passing a budget that will really help the needs faced by all of the people regardless of race, encourage economic growth in the nation, and benefit the poorer sector of the rakyat.

Wednesday, (Nov 25) – Praise God for the Prayer Ministry in Klang Wesley that continues to hold zoom prayer meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday mornings, and Thursday night since the MCO began in March. Praise God also for all the people who have faithfully joined these prayer meetings every week. Pray that God will continue to bless His people with strength and power to keep seeking Him for the needs of our church, the nation and the world. Pray that the Holy Spirit will motivate more people to join these online prayer meetings.

Thursday, (Nov 26) – Pray for the Worship Ministry of our church because this has been a difficult year as the worship teams have to cope with pre-recorded and live stream worship services, besides having to sing with masks on. Thank God that they have always given their best to the Lord. Pray that they will continue to deepen their relationship with Christ, and spend time to connect with Him during this season when they have to spend more time at home. Pray that the Lord will continue to refresh and renew them so they will serve Him out of the joy and fullness of their relationship with Him.

Friday, (Nov 27) – Pray for TRAC: Congratulations to Rev Joshua Khong on his election as the new President of TRAC (2021-2024). Pray for him and his family as they move to their new residence in TRAC office, PJ. Pray for a smooth transition between one President and another. Pray also that God’s wisdom be upon Rev Joshua Khong as he leads the Conference. Pray that he will work well with his team of new leaders in TRAC.

Saturday, (Nov 28) – Pray for the World: The Covid-19 cases and deaths continue to rise all over the world, the latest being an outbreak in South Australia. Pray for wisdom for the health authorities and governments in the nations of the world to effectively cope with this new wave of infections. Praise God for answered prayers – that medical scientists are getting positive results with regards to the development of a vaccine. Pray that God will bless their work and that there will be an effective vaccine to combat the Covid-19 virus by next year.

When Things Are Weak, God Can Show His Strength

The prophet Haggai wrote to the people of Judah after they returned from their exile. Over 70 years had passed since Nebuchadnezzar defeated their city, destroyed Solomon’s beautiful temple, and burned the gates of the city with fire. Most of the people living during the days of Haggai were born in Babylon. They had heard stories from their parents about Jerusalem and the temple but only a few of the oldest people had ever seen it.

Now they returned to Jerusalem and were busy building houses for themselves and rebuilding the temple. The temple of the Lord, however, had been neglected. Haggai pointed out the people’s failure to rebuild the temple and the price they were paying for that failure. “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build My house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” said the LORD. “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declared the LORD Almighty. “Because of My house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”

Some time had passed. The people had taken to heart the Word of the Lord through Haggai, so they began work on the new temple. Unfortunately, the older people who had seen Solomon’s temple were sad; this new temple seemed pathetic by comparison. The LORD asked, “Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?”

Solomon’s temple was a treasure, an architectural sight to behold. The poverty of the people at this point in Israel’s history prevented them from building anything like what Solomon had made. They did the best they could with what they had, but their best wasn’t even close to Solomon’s best work.

God sent the prophet Haggai with this message to encourage the people to keep working. It was true that the new temple would seem like a joke compared to the one it replaced but that was not important. The important thing is that God was with them: “‘For I am with you,’ declared the LORD Almighty. ‘This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’”

Then He made promises to them. “I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,” said the LORD Almighty. God made the most important promise which was that He would be there; His glory would inhabit the new temple just as it had the old one. He would provide the money for it, too: “‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declared the LORD Almighty.”

Finally, God said that this temple would someday be greater, more glorious than Solomon’s temple had been: “‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ said the LORD Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declared the LORD Almighty.’” That glory might not have been architectural but it would be better–God would work there making peace.

There are times when God’s work seems to take a step (or more than that) backward. What was once exciting, powerful, growing, and wonderful becomes something much less than any of those adjectives. It is naturally discouraging to God’s people when that happens. God, however, wants us to know that He uses small things. When things are weak, God can show His strength.

Are you discouraged about anything in your life because it just isn’t anywhere near what it used to be or could be? This is your opportunity, then, to believe in God and ask Him to work. God can take even the most meager things and make them great, so ask Him to glorify Himself that way. (BRIAN JONES)

Prayer List: November 15, 2020

Sunday, (Nov 15) – Praise God that He is in control of history, and the day is coming when Christ will return to earth in power and great glory to set up His everlasting Kingdom, and bring peace, joy and everlasting life to all who have placed their faith in Him. Pray that those who are feeble and weak in faith will be strengthened through the indwelling Holy Spirit to persevere unto that day. Pray that the Lord will grant grace to each of us to consider our lifestyles, our financial goals, our values and priorities, and make Him Lord of all areas of our lives. Pray that God will give us a renewed generosity with our time, our talents and our treasure to live and work for His everlasting Kingdom.

Monday, (Nov 16) – Pray for the World: Pray for the USA in the aftermath of their Presidential Elections 2020. Pray for God’s will to be done – that the people, no matter what their political affliation is, will accept whoever becomes the President for 2021-2014. Pray for reconciliation and unity for a nation that has been badly fragmented over the presidential elections, for peace to prevail and that there will be no violence of any kind in the weeks and months ahead. Pray also for the people to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves against the Covid-19 virus, as the daily cases are increasing steadily.

Tuesday, (Nov 17) – The daily number of Covid-19 cases in our nation continues to be high, especially in the Klang Valley because of its high density population, and the frequent movement of people from one place to another. As the conditional MCO was implemented to limit travel to curb the spread of the virus, pray that the public will comply with all the SOPs. Pray that God will protect all healthcare frontliners, and grant them a positive spirit and physical and mental strength as they continue to care for the sick. Pray also that God will grant wisdom to the health authorities so they will make effective decisions that will bring down the Covid-19 infections.

Wednesday, (Nov 18) – Pray for the Nation: Klang Valley residents suffered yet another unscheduled water cut on November 10, 2020, barely 3 weeks after the last one. Pray that the Selangor government will find the cause and solution for these water cuts so that it will not happen again, especially during this time of the pandemic. Pray also for the MPs that they will deliberate objectively on Budget 2021, so that the government will deliver a budget that will benefit all the rakyat, especially the poor and needy, regardless of race or ethnicity.

Thursday, (Nov 19) – Pray for the youths as most of them are studying online, for focus and strength to study diligently, and for head and heart preparation for their examinations. Pray for those facing major examinations early in 2021 that the Education Ministry will make decisions with the students’ best interests at heart so as to alleviate any uncertainty or anxiety. Pray for spiritual growth and hunger for God during this time as the youths have more time at home, and for continued strengthening of relationships between the youths and parents/siblings. Pray for the 12 year olds joining youths next year that it will be a positive experience for them even though the meetings may probably still be done online.

Friday, (Nov 20) – Pray for TRAC: By now, the TRAC appointments would have been publicly read. Pray for the pastors who will be going on transfer in 2021, that they will able to clear unfinished business in their local churches and make the necessary preparations for the next pastor to take over. Pray that the family members of these pastors will receive God’s love and peace during the period leading up to the end of 2020. Pray for God’s protection upon the pastors and their families as they move to their new parishes. Pray too for the local churches to be prepared for a change of pastor.

Saturday, (Nov 21) – Pray for the Cell Ministry that during this time of the pandemic, the Cell Groups will be able to meet regularly online via zoom, and that Cell Members will continue to grow spiritually, and be connected to one another through the online meetings. Pray for God’s grace and strength upon all the Cell Leaders as they lead their Cell Groups in this new normal. Pray that the conditional MCO will soon end so that Cell Groups that meet physically will be able to resume their meetings.

I Have Trusted In Your Mercy

Have you ever had one of those days when it seemed as though your prayers just bounced off the ceiling? I think perhaps that is the way David felt in Psalm 13:1-2, where he pours out his heart to God. He asks God, How long will you forget me? How long will You hide Your face from Me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul? Having sorrow in my heart daily? How long will my enemy be exalted over me? [Psalm 13:1-2]

When things are going very well, we feel so very close to God, but the very next day, things could be entirely different. In reality, we are frail creatures who need a lot of reassurance from the Lord. When you think of it, it is much like our relationship with our children, when they are young. We often need to tell them again and again how much we love them.

Often, like David in Psalm 13, when our life seems to be turned upside down, we begin to wonder about our own salvation, or we wonder what sins we have committed to make God refuse to answer us. I think that is what David means by “taking counsel in his soul”.

While it is good to examine our own heart and soul in the light of God’s Word, that may not be the reason for God being distant from us. Many times God is testing us. What will you do now? And many times God wants to remind us that it is He who leads us and guides us each day. We are not in control of our own destiny, as the culture around us likes to believe.

How did David do in response to God seeming to forget him? We see the answer in Psalm 13: 5-6: I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me. This trust in God did not come later when everything was going well again, but this trust came right in the midst of his grief and despair.

Oh, that we would be more like David. Perhaps it is because David went through so much grief that he grew to have such a strong faith in God.

When children go through childhood diseases, though it is extremely uncomfortable for them, we realize that they are building antibodies that will protect them for their entire lives. God is doing much the same for us. The many bumps and bruises of life cause us to continually turn to God. As the years pass, we begin to realize that we just do not get all that excited when the evil days come. God has taken care of us in the past and we know He will continue to do the same in the future.

We do find that it is much easier to trust God when everything is going great, but how do we do when everything is going wrong? Paul says it this way in Philippians 4:6-7: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  (LINDA   CROFT)

Title: Hope Beyond the Suffering
Scripture: Psalm 13: 1 – 6
Preacher: Yap Chee Kai

SERMON OUTLINE:
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Begin with a story: a pastor protested the death of a young man.
1.2 Psalm 13 helps us to see where we ought to anchor our hope/trust upon in the midst of hopelessness/crisis.
1.3 How we can overcome our feelings of despair, total abandonment, and unspeakable loneliness through this psalm when everything seems hopeless?

2.0 Expression of Despair (vv.1 – 2)
2.1 v.1: “How long” is depicted twice here; David could no longer contain his protests for indeed his patience had worn to the bone.
2.2 v.2a: David’s sense of God’s abandonment and snowballing thoughts of hopelessness tormented him with another cry-out “How long.” The word “sorrow” in Hebrew יָגוֹן (yagown) means torment.
2.3 v.2b: The final cry out “How long” depicts David’s doubt if his enemy can be held at bay much longer. He began to doubt about God’s Word, God’s goodness and God’s plan.
2.4 The fourfold repetition “How long” forms a refrain; stressing David’s long-standing sense of abandonment and heightens his pain and doubts.

3.0 Expression of Prayer (vv.3 – 4)
3.1 v.3a: David demanded a response from God; to look at him as God has hidden His face from him (1b).
3.2 v.3b: David cries out to God, “enlighten my eyes.” Instead of being lost in death, he desires his whole being to be restored.
3.3 v.4: David’s enemy is mocking his fall with laughter. He certainly did not want this intolerable picture of defeat to be the final chapter of his life.

4.0 Expression of Hope and Trust (vv.5 – 6)
4.1 v.5: “But” is the magical word. It denotes the turning point of this psalm.
4.2 David chose to shift his focus to God’s unfailing love (hesed) and salvation.
4.3 His longstanding relationship with God, not only shapes his present suffering, but it also infuses hope that is deeper than his doubts.
4.4 v.6: Therefore, David is able to end with the highest note; with joyous praise and thanksgiving for indeed God has been good to him.

5.0 Applications
5.1 We have our own `pit’ in life. So, remember this acronym: PIT.
5.2 Protest: model this psalm and Jesus to pour out your feelings or even your protest to God. There is hope beyond the suffering because of Christ’s grace is suffice.
5.3 Invocation: a powerful psalm as it invokes God and places us in the hand of God. There is hope beyond the suffering because Christ is worth holding on to faithfully even when do not experience His presence.
5.4 Trust: in God’s unfailing love (hesed). There is hope beyond the suffering because of God’s goodness.

6.0 Conclusion
6.1 Ends with a story where it begun. Beyond the suffering, there is still hope. Let us pray.
