Introduction

Matthew chapter 1 starts with an extensive genealogy of Jesus.
Genealogy is the study of family history, tracing lineages and ancestry, to understand where a family comes from.

1. Genealogy (vv1-17)

a. God’s faithfulness

God kept His covenants with Abraham (Genesis 12:2-3) and King David (2 Samuel 7:16) respectively. The genealogy confirms;
* Jesus is the promised heir of King David, the rightful king of the Kingdom of God.
* all nations would be blessed, pointing Jesus as the Messiah, the Saviour for all people.

b. God’s salvation plan for humanity

The genealogy directs us to see the universal hope of salvation for all people through Jesus. God’s salvation plan encompasses all humanity. (Ref. Galatians 3:7-9, Galatians 3:26-28)

2. Fulfilment of God’s promise (vv18-25)

Holy Spirit worked, and God used the ordinary yet righteous people, Joseph and Mary for the birth of Jesus. Although Joseph was not Jesus’ biological father, he played an important role in becoming a legitimate father of Jesus, preserving the lineage back to King David and Abraham.

3. God saves, God with us (vv21-25)

The prophecy (v23) is found in Isaiah 7:14, and was originally given to King Ahaz during his reign over Judah. The sign was ultimately fulfilled with the birth of Jesus, born of the virgin Mary (v23), and this sign of God for humanity endures eternally in Jesus. (Ref. Matthew 28:20, Romans 8:38-39)

Conclusion

May the name of Jesus be exalted and glorified this Christmas and always forever.
May every tongue confess His name as King of kings, Messiah, and the living God, who came to be with us and save us from our sins.
