Reflection: CHOSEN FOR CHANGE

And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. (Colossians 3:12-14)

I look at these qualities as the wardrobe of the Christian life. But first things first. Note that Colossians 3:12 starts by saying, “as those who have been chosen of God.” He picked us to be in His family and Kingdom. I like the way Jesus worded it in John 15:16: “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give you.” He chose us to be fruit bearers. The fruit involves both who we become “in Christ” and what we do for Him. The fruit includes the new wardrobe we put on.

Second, He calls us “holy.” This Greek word means “to be holy, set apart, sanctified or consecrated.” Its fundamental idea is “separation, consecration, devotion to the service of Deity, sharing in God’s purity and abstaining from worldly defilement.” The wardrobe God dresses us in relates to the attributes of His character. We are called to “put on Christ.”

Third, He calls us “beloved.” This is a special word. It means “those who are loved with Agape love.” I call this “the God kind of love.” Don’t run from His love. Embrace it and let it bring healing and wholeness into your life.

Putting on the wardrobe that follows in this context is a healing process. It involves the work of the Holy Spirit thoroughly changing us into new people made after the likeness of Christ. I see salvation as an event, but sanctification as a process. He changes us over time.

If you are a Christian, Jesus welcomes you into His personal wardrobe. He wants to dress us in His righteousness. He wants you and me to “put off” our fleshy attire and “put on” all the qualities mentioned in Colossians 3:12-17.

Let me stress that this wardrobe is not for special occasions. These qualities are the daily uniform for the family of God. By all means, put them on!

Prayer List: : 25th – 26th Dec 2021

Sunday, (Dec 26) – Thank God that because we are in Christ, we have become a loved, chosen and holy people. Praise Him for sending Jesus to be the ultimate example of how we are to be clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, and most of all, to let love be the guiding principle in the way we live. Pray that we will continue to grow in spiritual maturity and grow to be people who are peace-filled, Word-shaped and always thankful. Pray that the Holy Spirit will change our hearts to honour Christ in all we do, so that in our lives individually and together as His people, the world will see that Christ is over everything we do.

Monday, (Dec 27) – Pray for the Community Services Committee of Klang Wesley headed by Mr. Johnny Lim. Pray for the Lord’s leading in the efforts of reaching out to those who are affected badly by the flood through aids. Pray for the Lord to provide sufficient resources so that we may help the community to re-build their lives. Pray that in the midst of this intense hopelessness, we may point people to the hope that comes through our Lord Jesus Christ. Pray that we as the church will be the hands and feet that reaches out to those in need.

Tuesday, (Dec 28) – Pray for the COVID-19 situation in the nation given the holiday season and people are travelling freely, and businesses and hotels are reopened. The Omicron variant which is already in the country spreads at a rate that has not been seen with any previous variant. Pray that the public will not dismiss it as mild and underestimate this variant at our peril as the sheer number of cases can overwhelm our health system again. Pray that people will not let their guard down but continue to vigilantly follow all SOPs in addition to getting fully vaccinated. Pray also that safety measures will be put in place at relief centres where flood victims are being sheltered so as to prevent water borne diseases that may spread as well as COVID-19 cases.

Wednesday, (Dec 29)Pray for the Nation: “The Prime Minister has admitted that the response to the floods in Selangor could have been better” (The STAR, 22 December, 2021). Pray for wisdom for the government as the Prime Minister has vowed to do more following the lack of crisis coordination. Pray for the cleansing of the spiritual atmosphere behind every evil political scheme and selfish ambition, that they may be exposed and purged from our nation. Pray that God will establish a government administration characterised by wisdom and fruitfulness, and led by competency, compassion, effectiveness and integrity. Pray that the Prime Minister’s “Keluarga Malaysia” call will go beyond being merely a nice sounding slogan, but will be effective in healing the racial rift in our nation. Pray that the top priority of the government will always be the welfare of the rakyat, especially the needs of the underprivileged.

Thursday, (Dec 30)Pray for TRAC: Pray for all TRAC Churches who would be having their respective Watchnight Services tomorrow, 31 December 2021. Pray that churches will take time to pause and reflect on the presence of God throughout the year 2021. Pray that although it was a difficult year, we will learn to give thanks to God for all that He has given us. Pray for all TRAC Churches to be able to live out Paul’s exhortation in 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 which is to rejoice always, pray continually and to give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Friday, (Dec 31) – As we enter 2022 tomorrow, give thanks to God for all that He has allowed into our lives in 2021, the good along with the hard things, which have reminded us how much we need Him every single day. Pray that His Spirit will lead us each step of the new year – to guide our decisions and turn our hearts to deeply desire God above all else, above every dream and desire He has put within our hearts. Pray that He will always be honoured in our lives, and that others will be drawn to Him through our lives.

Saturday, (Jan 1)Pray for the World: Pray for a year of new beginnings for the world in 2022. Pray that people all over the world will have fresh encounters with God and fully experience His love and power and find hope and new life in Him after a difficult year of living under the shadow of the coronavirus. Pray that God’s people will not yield to apathy and complacency, but will step out of their comfort zones with hearts of love and compassion that spots timely opportunities to come alongside to help, comfort and pray for those who are lost and despairing. Pray also for new strength and grace from God to the persecuted Church, and for His protection and peace upon them.

Reflection: ADVENT WEEK 4: THE CANDLE OF LOVE

The ring was special! It signified she belonged to the organization. As she wore it she was aware of all it represented and of who it said she was. With it she was more conscious of how she acted. As a follower of Jesus you wear a distinguishing mark as well. Is it visible?

You wear His love.

By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).

When Jesus came to this earth, He brought a special kind of love. This love is unselfish, compassionate, unconditional. He loves us just as we are. Our condition is irrelevant to His love. It is a love that picks us up just where we are in life and carries us further than we could ever go on our own.

He gives us His love so we can give it away in the same unselfish, compassionate, unconditional way He gave it to us. He tells us this love will be our trademark. It will distinguish us as followers of Jesus.

Your actions reflect Jesus to the world around you. You can choose to offer love or to hold it back. In situations where it is hard to offer love, ask Him to give you an abundance of His own in your heart so you are able to give it away.

As you move into Christmas this week, be reminded of the distinguishing mark you carry as a follower of Jesus. Ask for His love to be evident in your words and actions as you interact with others. Seek to bring unity and balance into relationships or situations. Listen to people with sincerity and interest. Ask for a graciousness that comes from His Spirit as you mingle with those in your circle.

Wear the love of Jesus as your distinguishing mark as His follower.

Here is a prayer to help you do that.

Father God, thank You for Your generous love to me. Thank You that You see the abundance in my life rather than all my shortfalls. Help me to offer that same gracious love to those I mingle with this Christmas season. Pour Your love into my heart so I can give it away. May they know I am a follower of Jesus by my love. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Prayer List: 18 – 19 December 2021

Sunday, (Dec 19) – Praise God for His gift of love that is shown to us perfectly in Christ, our Lord. Pray that in this final week of Advent, the Lord will help us to reflect on the magnitude of love that was made manifest in Jesus. For all of us who are brothers and sisters in the faith, pray that God will help us to love one another in perfect harmony. Pray that the Lord will help us see every person the same way that He sees them, and to help us love them the way He loves them, even when they don’t love us back. Pray that we will learn to think less about ourselves, to set aside our own wants and needs, trusting that He is in control of them all – and then He will fill up that empty space with His love.

Monday, (Dec 20)Pray for the Nation: Pray for wisdom and insight for the government as tough measures are necessary to prevent a new wave of COVID-19 infections due to the Omicron variant. The government has allowed small, private Christmas and New Year’s Eve gatherings where attendees have taken a COVID-19 test and the result is negative, and there is no overcrowding. The SOPs will be tightened and the roll-out of the 3rd vaccine booster dose will be speeded up. Pray that the public will cooperate with the authorities and exercise wisdom and self-control to abide by all the regulations, especially during social gatherings. Pray that churches will be able to have in-person services during this Christmas season.

Tuesday, (Dec 21) – As we live in a “Martha” world of many distractions and never-ending demands, pray that God will help us cultivate a “Mary” heart in a “Martha” world. Pray that He will give us undivided hearts that we may live in awe of His name and choose to spend time in His Word that will help put our lives into proper perspective, so that we will deepen our communion with Him resulting in quieter, more gentle and kinder hearts. Pray that we will always choose the better part and sit at Jesus’ feet day by day so that our spirits may be refreshed and our souls revived, and we may be used by Him as a vessel for His praise and glory.

Wednesday, (Dec 22) – We praise and thank the Lord for His grace throughout the recently concluded Virtual Kids Holiday Camp. Pray that our children have indeed learned the importance of prayer and that they will not neglect their prayer time. Pray that each child will look to God as their heavenly Father who knows them each by name. Pray that our children will indeed experience the deep love of God so that no matter what they face in their lives, they will not be shaken. May the deep love of God, our Father, embrace each child and lead them onto the right path.

Thursday, (Dec 23) – The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of students in schools and higher education institutions. The students are at risk of depression as they have had to manage the uncertainty of the opening and closing of schools and educational institutions, on top of juggling their studies. Pray for close cooperation between parents, teachers, and mental health professionals, as this is crucial for timely intervention. Pray that parents will be more involved in their children’s lives and give them the space to pour out their hearts, and that parents will patiently listen to their children. Pray that students will avoid posting too much about their emotional state on social media and instead discuss such issues with their families.

Friday, (Dec 24)Pray for TRAC: Pray for all the respective preparations of TRAC Churches for Christmas. Pray for churches to be blessed and ministered to through Bishop Joshua Khong’s sermon. Pray for people to be renewed and strengthened as they prepare to enter into the new year. Pray that TRAC churches will learn to entrust themselves to God in the midst of the current uncertainty we are facing. Most importantly, pray that our churches will not forget the Christ-given commission, which is to make disciples of all nations.

Saturday, (Dec 25)Pray for the World: The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus continues to spread rapidly all over the world. Pray for divine wisdom for the Coronavirus experts around the world to be able to quickly determine Omicron’s infectiousness and severity and its global impact. Pray for wisdom for the governments of the world to take effective action to stem the spread of Omicron in their nations. As the world celebrates Christmas, pray that the hope, peace, joy, and love of Christ will permeate the hearts of people all over the world, and this will eclipse the fears, frustrations, and anxieties of the pandemic. Pray that many will hear the message of Christmas and turn from despair and hopelessness to find hope, peace, joy, and love in Christ.
