Walking Worthy Of Your Calling

One of the most fascinating creatures to me is the Portuguese Man o’ War. Many people mistakenly think of the Man o’ War as a jellyfish, but in reality, while bearing superficial resemblance, it is something else all together. The Man o’ War is actually a colony of four distinct types of polyps. The float/sail is a single polyp, and the original polyp of the colony. Attached to the sail are collections of three additional polyps; one for food capture, a second for digestion, and a third for reproduction. This colony of organisms are so tightly integrated together that they are unable to survive apart from the colony. The only exception to this is the sail polyp from which all the others are formed.

So what does this have to do with walking worthy? In Ephesians 4:1-6 Paul urges us to walk worthy of the calling we have received. He then proceeds to tell us to be humble, gentle, patient, put up with each other, and to make every effort to live at peace. Followed by a long list of things for which there is only one: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God & Father.

Paul has been talking about what Christ has done to heal the division between Jew and Gentile; working to produce a single man. And then discussed the revealed mystery of Christ, that we are to be members of one body. And he is going to go on from here to challenge us to live as a single body growing and building itself up in love. The common theme to all of these passages is that the body of Christ, rather than being like a herd of zebras racing across the savanna as independent creatures who travel together, should seek to mimic the Man o’ War, to be a single body.

If I am called to be a part of a Body, then how do I walk worthy of that calling? Some will look at this expression and see in it a call to live such a good life that I become worthy of God’s calling. But given the context I believe Paul means something else altogether. I walk worthy of my calling as a body part by doing my best as that part, losing myself for the good of the Body.

The body parts for the Man o’ War are simple; you’re either transportation, food capture, digestion or reproduction. There is no question about your role, and each member of the colony does its job to the fullest. The Body of Christ is much more complex, with many more parts, and each part with a history of acting independently. But none-the-less, I believe the Man o’ War has a powerful lesson to teach the Body of Christ in the unity we are called to achieve.

Walking worthy of being a body part is actually pretty hard for me, it is contrary to my nature. So how can I pull it off? By being completely humble, by being patient, by bearing with other body parts in love, by making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:2-3). All of those actions are concerned with interpersonal relationship within the Body; looking to put the interests of the Body ahead of my own. The Man o’ War does that and prospers as a colony, resulting in the individual members also prospering. Is it not possible that if we all put the good of the Body ahead of our own good that the Body would prosper, and that as it does we would also?   (ED JARRETT)

Prayer List: July 25-31, 2021

Sunday, (July 25) – Praise God for His Word that teaches us how to live as Christians in this fallen world. Pray for forgiveness for the times when we have not walked in humility, gentleness and with patience; when we have allowed pride and self-righteousness to have dominion over us and have walked haughtily with hearts blind to arrogance. Pray for forgiveness for the times we have exhibited harsh attitudes and rudeness. Pray that we will partner with the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts to be humble and gentle. Pray that the Lord will teach us to bear with one another in love. Pray that He will give us the grace and strength to eagerly seek to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace without compromising the truth in His Word.

Monday, (July 26) – Pray that Wesley Klang will be a church that would seek to honour God. Pray that the church will understand her call to be salt and light to the nation. Pray that we as a church will live our lives worthy of the calling we have received. Pray that we will draw closer to God each day by spending quality time with the Lord. Pray that we will not rush through our time with God, but that we will take time to linger in the presence of God. Pray also that we will learn to carry each other burdens during this difficult time.

Tuesday, (July 27) – Pray for God’s protection and intervention as the daily COVID-19 cases seem to escalate daily, with the highest numbers coming from the Klang Valley. Pray for God’s healing upon those who have contracted the virus, that many will be able to fully recover. Pray for resilience and physical, mental and emotional strength for the medical frontliners as many are reaching breaking point because many hospitals, especially those in the Klang Valley, are hitting full capacity. Reflection: WHEN THE LORD IS YOUR GOD

Have you ever truly committed your life to the Lord? When the Lord is your God, you make a personal commitment to Him. In Genesis 28:10-22, Jacob didn’t just “say” he had made a commitment and that the Lord was his God; he showed it by doing several, practical things that we will do too, if the Lord is our God:.

Jacob said because the Lord was his God, that he would take the stone he had rested his head against, and set it upright as a memorial pillar, and make the place where God had appeared to him, a place of worship. When the Lord is really your God, you will be committed to worship Him. Nobody “made” Jacob set up a place to worship God at Bethel. He WANTED to do that. God had really touched his life; he had really himself committed to Him, so he wanted to set up a place to worship Him there. And that is characteristic of someone who has really made the Lord their God. They want to worship Him. And if the Lord is really your God, then you are going to worship Him every day — starting at HOME! Worshiping God is the most important thing in your life, and you will do it all the time.

Jacob said in Genesis 28:22, “and of all that You give me, I will surely give a tenth to You.” It really is a mark of one’s commitment to the Lordship of God in his life. Jacob said, in effect, God, You are going to be my God: and one of the ways I am going to show it is by giving You the first tenth of everything You give me. That tithe was a mark, a sign, that God was really the Lord of his life. One of the most practical ways we can show the real priority of God in our lives, is by tithing. THAT is not just cheap talk. THAT is “putting your money where your mouth is” and shows that the Lord is really your God.

There are several signs like that that show whether the Lord really is, or isn’t your God. These are the two that Genesis 28:10-22 shows us: worshiping and giving.

The key is, if the Lord is really your God, there WILL be signs of it in your life. Your life will not be the same as everyone else’s, or the same as it used to be. There will be some things in your life that are different, and that will change, because you have committed your life to the Lord. We saw that in Franklin Graham’s life. In his early years, he lived for fun, for pleasure. He didn’t want Jesus telling him what to do. But after he committed his life to the Lord, things changed. And you can see it to this day. Franklin Graham has SHOWED that the commitment he made to the Lord that night in his bed was real, by the way that he has lived his life ever since.

Can that be said of YOUR life? Have you ever made a personal commitment to Jesus as the Lord & Savior of your life? Is the Lord your God? And if you say He is, does your life show it?
— Are you worshiping Him regularly, in “the house of God” like Jacob?
— And are you gladly giving back to Him from what He has given you?

It’s just like Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruit.” If that’s so — and it is — then what does the fruit of your life say about whether the Lord really is YOUR God?!

Prayer List: 17 – 18 July 2021

Sunday, (July 18) – Pray that as God’s people, we will grow in our commitment to Him. Pray that we may be solely and wholly committed to our walk with Him all the days of our lives, that we will not turn away from the path of righteousness for His name’s sake. Pray that our dependence in Him will grow deeper, our assurance in Him will grow wider, our faith in Him will grow stronger and our zeal for Him will grow bigger. Pray that we will develop a lifestyle of worship where in all that we do and say, we will work at it with all our hearts, as an act of worship unto the Lord. Pray that with gratitude and thanksgiving, we will offer to God all that He has given to us – our finances, time and talents, for the building of His Kingdom.

Monday, (July 19) – Pray for those who are involved in the Community Service Ministry of Wesley Klang. We praise and thank God for providing us with sufficient resources to help those who are in need. Pray for God’s protection to be upon our church members as they reach out to those who are in need of physical aids such as food during this EMCO. Pray that we would also be able to reach out to the community in Klang with the love of Christ. Pray that God will continue to guide the church in reaching out to the people in Klang.

Tuesday, (July 20) – The daily COVID-19 cases breached the 10,000-mark last week, with the highest numbers coming from the Klang Valley. Pray that the rakyat will stringently follow all SOPs as the health DG said that with the new COVID-19 variants, infections can spread very quickly via airborne. Praise God that more vaccination centres are opening up. Pray that the vaccination programme will continue to be speeded up, and more people will be vaccinated very day. Pray for God’s protection upon all vaccination centres, and that all staffers in the centres will have strong immunity and stay healthy and be free from the virus as they serve the people.

Wednesday, (July 21) – Pray for our brave frontliners – the doctors, nurses, house officers, contract doctors and other allied medical staff as many of them are stressed, frustrated, exhausted with shattered spirits, especially those working in hospitals that are hitting full capacity. Pray that they will always be provided with adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) as they tend to the sick, making the best of the situation as possible. Pray that the government will take swift and impactful action to prevent hospitals from hitting full capacity. Pray that people with medical expertise will lead this mammoth medical operation, and virologists will be consulted on decisions on lockdowns.

Thursday, (July 22)Pray for the World: The number of COVID-19 cases in South-East Asia has almost reached 6 million as the Delta variant slams many of these nations. Thank God that the flow of vaccine doses to these nations is picking up speed. Pray that inoculation rates will increase rapidly in these nations and help blunt the effect of the rapidly spreading Delta variant.

Friday, (July 23)Pray for TRAC: Pray for the Board of Christian Education in TRAC. Pray that the board members will be able to make sense of all the feedback that they have received regarding Christian Education in various churches. Pray for the board to understand the CE needs of the churches and pray for wisdom as the board seeks to address the various needs. Pray that all board members will be able to work together in one spirit and mind.

Saturday, (July 24)Pray for the Nation: The Parliament will reconvene in 2 days’ time, on July 26, 2021. As the upcoming session is only 5 days, pray that the MPs will make the best of the sitting, put aside all unseemly politicking, stand united and accord Parliament with the respect it is due. Pray that the MPs will play an effective check-and-balance role, and not according to party lines. Pray that debates will be relevant and of national interests, given the health and economic crises the nation is facing. Pray that this Parliamentary sitting will focus primarily on passing good laws and holding the government in check, and that it will be a fruitful and quality proceeding.
