Prayer List: 14 – 15 Aug, 2021

Sunday, (August 15)Sunday School Ministry – We praise and thank God for the opportunity to reach out to the children through the Sunday School Ministry. Pray for the love of Christ to be shared to all children. Pray that our children will indeed grow up to be men and women after God’s own heart. Pray that God would draw more children from the neighborhood into His Kingdom through the Sunday School Ministry. Pray for God’s wisdom, strength and favour to be upon all Sunday School teachers as they persistently serve the Lord in this Ministry.

Monday, (August 16) – Pray for God’s forgiveness for the many times when we have cheapened His grace through our disobedience and blatant disregard for His commands. Praise God for His Word that is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our paths. Pray that we will treasure it not only with our mouths but in our hearts and through the way we live our lives by choosing to hide His Word in our hearts and to meditate on His promises. Pray that the Holy Spirit will fill our minds with the knowledge of His Word and help us apply it to our lives so that we can make better choices and devote ourselves to tasks that will further God’s Kingdom. Pray that as we keep our hearts and minds focused on the Lord and His Word, our faith will be rock-solid.

Tuesday, (August 17) – The COVID-19 daily cases reached new heights in the past week, with increasing number of deaths and brought-in-dead cases, and several northern states in the peninsular are experiencing surges in the daily cases. Pray for wisdom for the authorities to make right decisions that will not compromise the safety of people as they continue easing curbs in the next phase of the National Recovery Plan for fully vaccinated people where dine-ins, outdoor sports and interstate tourism are being allowed. Pray that the rakyat will exercise patience and self-control as the government is hard pressed, and pressure mounts ever increasingly to open up the economy and to also curb the rising daily cases of COVID-19 infections.

Wednesday, (August 18)Pray for the Nation: The parliamentary majority of the Prime Minister will be determined during the Dewan Rakyat meeting scheduled for September 7, 2021. Pray that the nation’s politicians will focus on the needs of the rakyat with regards to the pandemic, the weakened financial situation and many job losses rather than scrambling to collect as many MPs as possible for their respective parties for this sitting of the parliament. Pray that the politicians will put the needs of the nation above their own political ambitions at this crucial time. Pray that the political situation will stabilise so that the nation will be spared the potential of Parliament’s dissolution and a general election during a pandemic.

Thursday, (August 19) – With slightly over two weeks to go before schools reopen, parents and teachers want the Ministry of Education (MoE) to reconsider the September 1, 2021 reopening date as the new daily COVID-19 cases show no sign of declining. Pray for wisdom for the MoE, and that in making a decision, the ministry will give special consideration for the safety and health of the students and teachers, If the reopening of schools has to be postponed to a later date, pray that the MoE will smoothen the home-based teaching and learning processes by providing fast and affordable Internet access, and free Internet packages to students from lower-income families.

Friday, (August 20)Pray for TRAC: We praise God for the recently concluded one-day Pastors’ Retreat on Loss, Grief, Faith & Healing. Pray that pastors will continue to take time to reflect on the topic and be ministered to by the Lord. Pray for God’s wisdom to be upon all pastors and leaders as they lead their respective churches in this challenging season. Pray for all Local Church Executive Committees to be able to discern God’s movement in their respective churches. Pray for a good working relationship between the pastors and the leaders.

Saturday, (August 21)Pray for the World: New cases of the coronavirus continue to surge across the United States, driven by the fast-spreading and highly contagious Delta variant that now makes up the majority of COVID-19 infections in the country. More than 99 percent of hospitalisations and deaths from COVID-19 in the nation are people who are not fully vaccinated. Pray that more people will seek to be vaccinated against the virus. Pray also that fully vaccinated people will continue to wear masks in public indoor locations in areas of high transmission.

Walking The Way Of The Cross

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2)

Several years ago I had the privilege of visiting Jerusalem. As a part of this trip, I walked along the Way of the Cross (Via Crucis in Latin, also called the Via Dolorosa or the Way of Suffering). This is the path through the streets and alleys of Jerusalem upon which, according to Christian tradition, Jesus carried his cross. Along the Way of the Cross, there are twelve stations that invite us to reflect upon the experience of Jesus in that place and its relevance for us.

As meaningful as it was to walk the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem, in a very real sense you and I should do this each day, no matter where we live. Ephesians 5:1-2 says that we are to imitate God “and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Notice that we are to “walk” in the way of love. This refers, not to literal walking, such as I did that day in Jerusalem, but rather to how we live our lives.

What does it mean to walk in the way of love? Paul answers this question by pointing to the death of Jesus: “just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us” (Ephesians 5:2). Though Jesus loved people in a variety of tangible ways during His earthly life (feeding, healing, holding, teaching, etc.), His most dramatic act of love was giving up His life for us on the cross. Thus, the cross of Jesus defines the center of His love, and we are to imitate God by walking in the way of love, the Way of the Cross, the Via Crucis.

Much could be said about what this means. But let’s pause for a moment to notice what else it says in Ephesians 5:2. Christ’s giving up of Himself on the cross was “for us.” It was an act of love for us, the supreme act of love, indeed. But the verse goes on, “as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” By walking in the way of self-giving love, Christ not only served us, but also He served His Heavenly Father. By loving others in such a sacrificial way, Christ also offered a beautiful sacrifice to God.

And so do we. As we love people in imitation of God, as we seek to walk in the Way of the Cross, not only are people served, but also God is worshipped. Think of it. Your love for others does double duty, if you will. It cares for people and it glorifies God. It meets human need and it honors God.

For Your Reflection:

  • As you think about your life, past and present, in what ways have you walked the way of the cross?
  • Are there ways you are loving people even as Christ loved you and gave Himself up for you?
  • When have you received this kind of sacrificial love from others?

Pray that we as a church would remain steadfast in the love of God which never ceases. Help us to cultivate a heart of gratitude in the midst of this raging pandemic. Pray that He will help us to know in our hearts that in the midst of chaos, His love invites us to be still and know that Heis God.

Saturday, August 14– Pray for the World:More than 200 million cases of COVID-19 cases have now been registered world-wide since the virus first emerged in December 2019. Many of the Asean nations, Japan and Sydney in Australia are experiencing unprecedented surges in COVID cases because of the infectious Delta variant of the virus. Pray that God will intervene and bring down the infectivity of the virus. Pray that the high-income nations will heed the appeal by the World Health Organisation to donate vaccines to the low-income nations and hold off giving booster vaccine shots to their more vulnerable citizens until more people are vaccinated across the world.

The Call To Ministry In Christ

The Olympic Games are internationally recognized events where each competing nation presents the best of their athletes. In theory, they all compete under the rules of fair play, but in reality the better trained and equipped athletes, with few exceptions, are the better financed and also the medal winners! This does not mean all the competitors don’t try their best, because they certainly do, but one can hardly call it fair play! Even so, all the individual and team performances are geared up for one thing only: To win that coveted gold medal. Or, if the losing party protests with enough big media backing, the judges may even grant double gold medals! I suppose for “home and country” we can all be Olympic fans to some degree.

While many get carried away with the glamour and politics of the Olympics, it seems that the church unconsciously follows a similar pattern. When the church loses its focus, it also becomes competitive and political. The church competes for members, positions, programs and dollars. Power-plays become evident among its clergy, while members eagerly await the next scandal! Sometimes it seems that the church can’t tear itself down fast enough and bring down as many as it can on its way down. Obviously, this is not the way God planned it!

The church regains its focus when it turns from self-centeredness and looks once again to its Head, Jesus Christ. In Christ the church is built up, not torn down. Through His death and resurrection, Christ has defeated and triumphed over all the foes of the church. And He has given gifts to every member of His Body, the church (Ephesians 4:7-10). In giving apostles and prophets, He has given foundational gifts on which the church can stand. He gives functional gifts of ministry or service by equipping the church through evangelists, pastors and teachers.

Every member is uniquely gifted in one ministry or another for the building up of His church. The purpose of Christ’s gifts is so the church may mature into the fullness of adulthood and not be swayed by false teachings. The Church universal and at the local level needs to mature in love so as not to lose focus and blur its vision with the carnality and egocentrism of this fallen world.

As Paul states, like the games, we run a race, but the race we run is not for gold, silver or bronze medals (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). We run a race for the prize of the high calling in Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:10-16). We continue in the path of our Lord and Savior and await His glorious coming and the crown of righteousness unto eternal life (2 Timothy 4:6-8). Now, that is a prize worth running for! And, in Christ it is already ours (1 John 5:13). Amen!

Jesus Christ has showered His church with an abundance of gifts that overflow into the seats and aisles of its ministry. May every believer answer his or her calling and mature in love to the building up of the whole Body. Amen.

For Your Reflection:
• How well are you running the race of Christian maturity? Are you still at the starting gate? Or are you halfway there but out of breath? Or maybe you are on the last lap and stretching out for the finish line? See 1 Corinthians 9:24-27.

• We share many tasks or vocations (callings) in this life, but our highest calling is to share in the ministry of Jesus Christ. There is one ministry, but a variety of services to perform. To which of these are you called? How effectively do you contribute to the edification of the whole Body? (LORENZO ARROYO)

Prayer List : July 31 & August 01

Sunday, (August 1) – Praise God for the apostles and prophets who laid the foundation for the Church, whose teaching, given through the Holy Spirit, we have in Scripture. Thank God for the evangelists who take the Gospel to new places and people who have yet to turn to Jesus. Thank God for the pastors and teachers, the leaders God has given to mature us as they do the work of ministry so that His Body is built up. Pray that the Body of Christ will experience growth: growth in breadth as more are saved and added to our number, and growth in depth as we grow deeper in Him and be more Christlike. Pray that we will always stand firm on the truth of His Word and not be tossed back and forth by difficult circumstances or false teaching. Pray that our lives together may bring glory to His name.

Monday, (August 2) – Pray for God’s healing to be upon all those who are sick and hurt. Pray for God’s constant protection to be upon all people. Pray that we as a church will draw near to God in the midst of this crisis. We especially pray for God’s abiding presence to be with all those who are either quarantined at home or recuperating in hospitals. Pray for God’s peace which surpasses all understanding to comfort them and to remove all their fears.

Tuesday, (August 3 – Pray for our church (especially our audio-visual IT and technical support team, worship teams, Pastor Gaurri, liturgists and leaders of the church) and all churches throughout the world as we battle the rulers, the authorities, cosmic powers over this present darkness and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Pray for the Lord’s protection and covering over His churches. Commit our church and churches around the world to be united in one spirit and equipped with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the Gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit as we fight against the principalities and powers of darkness.

Wednesday, (August 4) – Pray for the Nation:Pray for good and favourable outcomes from the recent Parliamentary sitting. Pray that our political leaders will not keep focusing on their political ambitions but will unite together for the well-being of the nation and the rakyat, and focus on the important issues the nation is facing, namely the health crisis and the weakened economy resulting from the pandemic. Pray that the nation’s leaders will be people of integrity, and will act justly and do what is right, love mercy and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8).

Thursday, (August 5) – The COVID-19 cases show no sign of abating, the infectivity rate continues to be high and the daily deaths are also high. Pray for God’s mercy upon the situation. Pray for the Lord’s peace and healing upon those who have contracted the coronavirus, especially those who are in critical condition. Pray for comfort for those who have lost family members to the disease. Pray that those who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms will take personal responsibility to observe strict quarantine so that they will not infect others. Pray for wisdom for the government that it will carefully assess the situation before allowing more freedom of movement for people who have been fully vaccinated.

Friday, (August 6) – Pray for TRAC:Pray that all TRAC Churches will continue to be salt and light to the communities around them. Pray that God will open our eyes to see the needs around us and pray for wisdom to respond appropriately. Pray for God’s protection to be upon all those who are going out to give food aids to those in need. Pray for TRAC Churches to be bold in sharing the love of Christ during this pandemic. Pray that our people will be ministered to as they participate in the weekly online worship services.

Saturday, (August 7) – Pray for the World:Nearly 40,000 people from foreign countries had entered Japan for the Olympic Games which will end tomorrow (August 8, 2021), and more than 150 people associated with the Games have been tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Pray that as the athletes and officials return to their homes, they will not carry the COVID virus with them and cause cases to spike in their home countries. Pray also for Tokyo, which hosted the Games, as the city experienced a surge in COVID infections recently.
