Prayer List: September 27, 2020

Sunday, (Sep 27) – Just as Christ paid the price for a full and lasting reconciliation between us and God, pray that as God’s children we will choose to embrace a spirit of reconciliation in conflict situations. Pray that we will guard against unbridled anger, and watch what we say, choosing to communicate God’s grace with our words. Pray that we will always rely on the Holy Spirit’s power to work within us to be peacemakers. Pray that the Lord will teach us to forgive and resolve conflicts quickly and peacefully. Pray that when possible, we will also help others resolve their conflict situations. Pray especially that the Holy Spirit will help resolve conflict situations in marriages and families.

Monday, (Sep 28) – Pray that God will give us the courage to give thanks for everything to Him in every circumstance, for this is His will for us in Christ. Pray that the Holy Spirit will strengthen our prayer life, and when events come along that threaten our peace and cause us to worry, He will remind us to seek the Lord in prayer. Pray that we will learn to let petitions and praises shape our worries and anxieties into prayers, letting God know all our concerns. Pray that He will, then, displace the worry in our hearts with His shalom peace that guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Tuesday, (Sep 29) – Pray that we will guard our hearts and minds against the corruption in the world by being selective about what we allow into our minds. Pray that everyday, we will make a conscious choice to dwell on those things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent and worthy of praise. Pray that we will fix our minds on what is best in this life and allow these thoughts to shape our words and deeds. Pray that the Lord will protect us against the chaos and distractions of the world, and by His Spirit we may live in obedience to His Word that He may be glorified in us.

Wednesday, (Sep 30) – Pray for the Nation: As the political turmoil in the nation escalates, pray that God will demolish the strongholds in the unseen realm of demonic activities, secret plotting and witchcraft. Pray that the intensifying efforts of the evil principalities and powers in stirring and stoking disunity, corruption and deception, and plotting unholy alliances, will all fail and be destroyed by God’s almighty power. Pray that our political leaders will not focus on their own personal agendas, but will choose to work together sincerely for the good of the nation and the welfare of the people.

Thursday, (Oct 1) – There is a definite increase of Covid-19 spreading in the community based on the rising number of active cases, especially in Sabah. Pray that God will grant wisdom to the health authorities to contain the virus and prevent it from spreading, and that no new clusters will develop. Pray that the situation will not lead to a potential new wave. Pray for comfort for those whose families have been touched by illness or death during this time. Pray that the new initiatives introduced by the government which gives a lifeline to cash-stapped businesses and help people weather the effects of the pandemic will be effective in helping the economy to recover.

Friday, (Oct 2) – Pray for the Methodist Church in Malaysia: Pray for the Consecration Service of the new Bishop elect, Rev Dr T. Jeyakumar on October 4, 2020 in Trinity Methodist Church, PJ. Pray for good weather. Pray that this service will bring glory and honour to God. Rev Jeyakumar has served God well over the past 8 years as TRAC President. Pray that he will remain close to God always, especially from 2021 onwards as he takes on a higher calling in the Methodist Church.

Saturday, (Oct 3) – Pray for the World: A number of European countries are reporting sharp increases in Covid-19 infections, the number of coronavirus cases in the world have surpassed 32 million, with more than a million deaths, and people are becoming increasingly weary and hopeless as the pandemic drags on with no end in sight. Pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire Christians to find ways to be the loving embrace of God to the world, and help people find life and hope in Christ.

Title: Crossing Jordan River
Scripture Text: Joshua 1: 1 – 9
Preacher: Dr Tai Kim Teng

Introduction

Joshua and the Israelites (40,000 warriors) were crossing the Jordan River during flood stage. It was an impossible task unless their main attention and focus is on God (mentioned 8 times in this text)

God told Joshua 3 key points:

1. Be Strong in the Lord

Meaning be strong spiritually. Which is trusting God.
Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

In the past “I was with Moses. In the present “I will be with you”
and in the future “I will never leave you nor forsake you”

2. Be Courageous

“Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the ability to face fear & finish the task” Nelson Mandela.

Queen Esther showed courage when she said “if I perish, I perish” Esther 4:16b

Courage is obedience in the presence of fear.

3. Be Careful

Be careful to obey all the law and do everything written in it.
A careless and carefree attitude must be avoided at all cost.
Be careful in knowing that only God can get them across.
It must be God’s way. Not my way, your way or just anybody’s way.

Conclusion

Joshua and the Israelites were not alone in crossing the Jordan River.

God was with them and God stood in the middle of the river so that
they can cross over safely.

In this Covid pandemic, we are not alone. God is in the middle and will help us cross safely if we put our trust in him.

Questions for discussion

1. Share one new insight you learn from this sermon

2. Of the 3 key points to get ready to cross the river, which is most important?

3. Share some of the challenges you face in this Covid pandemic and how God has help you overcome these fears and focus on him.

Covid 19 And Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

Joshua was the new leader of the Israelites. He was a bit unsure how things were going to go from this point forward for the Israelites. In the midst of this uncertainty, God spoke to Joshua. As God spoke to Joshua then, I believe God also wants to speak to us now.

“Have I not commanded you?” — God had put Joshua in his leadership position and God was leading him and would lead him. Before the coronavirus outbreak, wasn’t God leading us? Well, guess what? God still is leading us and guiding us — that has not changed one bit!

“Be strong and courageous.” — In his uncertainty of his leadership and the overall future of the Israelite people, God encouraged Joshua to be strong and courageous. Our present times certainly are uncertain: doing whatever we can to help contain a virus that has spread across the world. Yet, in the midst of this uncertain future, God encourages us to be strong and courageous and with His help, we can do just that!

“Do not be frightened” — God knew that this was a normal response to Joshua’s situation, but God encouraged an opposite response. Instead of being frightened, God instructed Joshua to be strong and courageous. It is normal, in the midst of this coronavirus, to be frightened, but God encourages us to respond differently — to be strong and courageous. The people of the world need to see Christ’s followers not shuddering in fright, but resting in God with His strength and courage.

“and do not be dismayed” — This is another normal response, but being dismayed over a long period of time can lead to deep depression, which leads to a whole host of other physical and emotional concerns. So, again God encourages the opposite response—instead of being dismayed and losing hope, be strong and courageous. We can battle dismay with God’s strength and courage!

“for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Here is further reasoning for our strength and courage: God is with us wherever we go. Where are we going right now? We don’t necessarily know, with all of what is going on with the spread of the coronavirus. What we do know is that, no matter what happens, our God is with us. That can be and should be enough for us to face this uncertain future with the strength and the courage that God commands.

So, how about it? Shall we face COVID-19 with JOSHUA 1:9? Shall we deal with fright and dismay with the strength and courage that God prescribes? Shall we face an uncertain future, knowing that God is with us no matter what? Yes, yes, and yes — we indeed shall! Amen!

Prayer List: September 20, 2020

Sunday, (Sep 20) – Pray that we will not be tempted to lean on our own strength and courage, and to depend on ourselves when we face difficult situations, but that we will look to God first and foremost and lean on the strength and courage of who He is in every situation, and to trust Him completely to meet our every need. Pray that the Lord will give us strength when we are weak, love when we feel forsaken, courage when we are afraid, wisdom when we feel foolish, comfort when we feel alone, hope when we feel rejected, and peace when are in turmoil.

Monday, (Sep 21) – The number of Covid-19 infections in Malaysia has exceeded 10,000, with the majority of new infections and new clusters emerging from Sabah. Pray for wisdom for the health authorities in the state to deal with this latest spike of infections, and for the public to cooperate with the authorities to stop the rising infections. Pray for God’s protection upon many of the Sabahans stationed in West Malaysia who are going back for the state elections that as they strictly follow the SOPs, they will stay healthy and not contract the virus. Pray also that although the infections are well contained in West Malaysia, the public will not let their guard down, but continue to comply with all the SOPs.

Tuesday, (Sep 22) – Pray for the Church in Malaysia that if there is lukewarmness in our churches, we will repent and seek God’s forgiveness. Pray that God will help us recognise neglected priorities in our lives that has cased damage to our passion and love for God. Pray that we will not fall into complacency when all things seem to be routine and in control. Pray that God will remove and heal our spiritual blindness, and that we will perceive the things of God. Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower His Church to be “hot” again for Christ, and that we will keep our spiritual fervency.

Wednesday, (Sep 23) – Pray for the Nation: Pray that the Covid-19 situation in Sabah will be under control so that the State elections will be carried out as scheduled on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Pray that God will keep the Sabahans safe from the coronavirus as they go forth to vote. Pray that God will bless them with wisdom, knowledge and discernment to vote for the righteous candidates who really care for the poor, the disadvantaged and who have a vision to lead the state forward in terms of progress and prosperity. Pray for clean and fair elections, and that everything will be carried out in a peaceful manner. Pray that justice and righteousness will be restored in the state government.

Thursday, (Sep 24) – Pray for the next generation that even as our youths have not been able to have physical meetings, they will use this time to seek to develop a deeper relationship with Christ for themselves. Pray that they will spend quality time with the Lord. Pray that they will see the good in this and make time for it, and that prayer, Bible reading and private worship will be important to them. As the Youth Ministry is making plans to resume physical meetings, pray that the youths will be able to meet in church soon, and that they will come not because of their friends, but because they love Jesus.

Friday, (Sep 25) – Pray for TRAC: The Board of Ministry (BOM) will be having a physical board meeting on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. A major part of the agenda will be interviewing pastors who are applying for odination in 2020. Pray for Pastor Lester Lim (Elder’s ordination), Pastors William Kwong, Koe Swee Kee, Lewis Loke, Jonathan Chan & Wong Chun Mun (all Deacon’s ordination). Pray that God will prepare their hearts toward this interview and the 45th Session TRAC in mid November 2020. Pray that the fire and passion of Christ will continue to work deeply within their souls.

Saturday, (Sep 26) – Pray for the World: As the Covid-19 outbreak drags on with no end in sight, many people are battling pandemic fatigue, which can take a toll on mental and emotional health, and may result in the worsening of mental health conditions and chronic health problems. Pray for wisdom for the governments of the world’s nations to come up with plans to help their citizens cope with this problem. Pray too that an effective vaccine will be discovered quickly.

Sermon Title: Outstanding Second Generation Disciples
Scripture: Philippians 2: 12 – 30
Preacher: Rev Ashok Amarasingham

We are celebrating Holy Communion this weekend. Please prepare the elements before starting the video.

Sermon Notes:

1) Introduction
1.1 Recruiting & Processing/Packaging Industry

1.1.1 The church must constantly be recruiting potential disciples of Christ. The church that fails to evangelise will die a natural death.

1.1.2 As “raw material” must undergo processing so that the end product will be refined and ready for packaging/delivery…so too the disciples must be discipled well before entering eternity.

1.1.3 The church that fails to disciple others will produce half-baked Christians that will never take discipleship seriously.

1.2 Our church theme: Discipline Ourselves so as to Disciple Others.

1.3 Focus for Today
The only way to make outstanding second generation disciples is by intentionally teaching God’s truth by word and by deed…and pray to God.

2) God’s part, My (disciple) part & Our (church) part: All must be in sync for discipleship to progress
2.1 Paul was just as practical as he was profound. After describing the “mind of Christ” (Philippians 2:5) and Christ’s humility (Philippians 2: 5-11), he moves on to practical application.

2.2 As a church, we are to be shining lights of Christ in a crocked and twisted generation (Philippians 2: 15).

2.3 Practical Application
2.3.1 Paul devoted his life to discipleship (even while under house arrest).
* “even if I am poured out as a drink offering” (2: 17).

2.3.2 How convinced are you to disciple others?
Fellowship is easy and good but is clearly “a deficient gospel” unless teaching God’s Word (in theory and practice) to others is done.

3) Spiritual Parenting is Needed in the Church: Timothy & Epaphroditus are Living Testimonies of the Fruit of Discipleship
3.1 It is great to portray Jesus and Paul as role models, but…

3.2 We need examples of ordinary men (& women) who become extraordinary people in God’s service like Timothy and Epaphroditus.

3.3 Epaphroditus (a non Jew) was precious to Paul, and Paul listed his manifold functions…

3.4 Practical Application
3.4.1 Leadership challenge – If discipleship is the “core business” of the church, why are the leaders not ensuring this?

3.4.2 Pray for the church leadership – God to give them strength and the will to do discipleship.

4) Conclusion/Summary

A Life Of Service

Timothy and Epaphroditus were two average people. One of them was timid, the other one was sick. They were just ordinary people, yet they made a difference. Paul listed 26 people by name in Romans 16. They all loved God; they all loved Paul. Yet only two came through. Maybe their schedules got in the way. They may have been too busy. Maybe they had other concerns. Perhaps they were too ambitious. They ended up letting Paul down. They were more interested in their own affairs than in what matters to Jesus Christ. The difference with Timothy and Epaphroditus wasn’t ability. It was their willingness to be servants. Everyday servants have convictions. Here they are:

My life isn’t about me. It’s about what Jesus is doing. Everyday servants don’t live for themselves. When you think about, living for yourself is a pathetic way to live. It’s shallow. Everyday servants agree with what Paul said in Acts 20:24: “But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.”

The greatest contribution I will make with my life is how I prove myself in consistently serving others, even (especially) during hardship. It’s not about me. It’s about others, and how I can serve them. Even Jesus didn’t come to serve, but to serve others. We get to give up our concern over our own interests and priorities in order to be concerned about serving Christ and others. “For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 2:21).

God uses ordinary people when they make a radical, risky commitment to live for a higher purpose. An example is D.L. Moody. He wasn’t average. He was below average. He was a shoemaker. His education was poor. The first time he applied for church membership, he failed. Not many people fail when they apply to join a church, but he didn’t know enough. There was nothing extraordinary about him.

One day he heard a preacher, Henry Varley, say these words: “The world has yet to see what God can do with and for and through and in a man [an ordinary person] who is wholly consecrated to him.” Moody thought, “What if I were that man?” He lived the rest of his life, and touched thousands of people for eternity, because he was an ordinary person who made a radical, risky commitment to live for a higher purpose.

I wish you could see what God could do with and for and through and in you – not because you’re extraordinary, any more than all of us are extraordinary. I wish you could see the impact that God wants to have with your life, because you, like Timothy and Epaphroditus, become ordinary people who follow the example of Jesus Christ, and take upon yourself the form of a servant, and begin to serve others – right where you are, with what you’re doing right now. (DARRYL DASH)
