Prayer List: August 30, 2020

Sunday, (Aug 30) – Praise God for the wonderful example of true humility that is seen in the life and ministry of Christ, who lived His life in humble submission and obedience to the Father. Thank God that we are in union with Christ, and we have the mind of Christ. Pray that we will choose to submit to the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit in our lives so that He will help us develop the fruit of humility, meekness and goodness that was so evident throughout the life of Jesus. Pray that the Spirit will help us not to do anything out of selfish ambition or foolish vanity, but rather that we will develop the godly grace to regard the needs and desires of others as being more important than our own.

Monday, (Aug 31) – Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower the Church of Malaysia to hold fast to Christ, and not let our faith be weakened by the temptations of the world. Pray that believers will commit every aspect of their lives to Jesus, and in areas where we have lowered our Christian standards and allowed compromise to set in, we will humbly confess them before the Lord, and seek His grace to help us rededicate our lives to Him. Pray that pastors and church leaders will teach and preach sound doctrine to their members, and the people will hear the Word of God through their hearts, and allow the Word to shape their standard of belief and behaviour.

Tuesday, (Sep 1) – Pray for the Nation: As our nation has just celebrated our 63rd Independence Day, give thanks to God that despite the political instability caused by weakened coalitions, Malaysia remains peaceful and well placed to navigate through these unprecedented times brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and the global trade wars. Pray for full freedoms to be accorded to all peoples of Malaysia to enjoy; such as religious freedoms, social, educational and economic equality and fair play among races and religions, so that the symbolism of Merdeka and a free people are honoured.

Wednesday, (Sep 2) – The locality of Amanjaya district in Kedah has been put under strict lockdown indefinitely in a move to control the spread of Covid-19, and residents will not be allowed to leave the locality, while outsiders will not be allowed in. Pray that members of the public will be patient, and exercise social responsibility, giving full cooperation to the frontliners, and strictly adhering to the restrictions brought about by the SOPs of the enhanced MCO. Pray that God will grant success to the health ministry and the transmission of the virus will be effectively curbed.

Thursday, (Sep 3) – Pray for the Orang Asli (OA) new believers in our nation that they will bear good fruit as they grow and mature in Christ. Pray that God’s Word will take root in their hearts and help them overcome bad habits and negative influences from the former way of life, and from unbelieving relatives and friends. Pray that they will hold fast to their faith in Christ, and not turn to charms and fetishes, to seek healing in God, and not resort to seeking help from the village bomoh. Pray that as they live new lives in Christ, they will be effectives witnesses for Him to the pre-believers in their villages.

Friday, (Sep 4) – Pray for the Methodist Church in Malaysia: The General Conference (highest executive body) of the Methodist Church in Malaysia was meant to be held in a hotel in PJ from September 8-11, 2020. However, due to the current pandemic, the GC will only be held on September 8, online. Pray that the 6 different Conferences (meeting at different hubs both in West & East Malaysia) will be successful in having online GC, and especially in the voting system – that it will be trouble free. Pray for the election of a new Methodist bishop (2021-2024). Our current bishop, Rev Dr Ong Hwai Teik, cannot stand again for the bishop’s post due to his age. Pray that the new bishop will be a person under God’s mighty empowering and will be obedient to God almighty.

Saturday, (Sep 5) – Pray for the World: India is the country hardest hit in Asia by Covid-19, and its confirmed cases will soon cross the 4 million mark, with more than 65,000 deaths. Pray for God’s wisdom upon the Indian government as it struggles to address the rising numbers of infections, and the devastation of health services and livelihoods, with tens of millions of people having lost their jobs.

Building A Godly Family

We need to build a relationship with God so our families can see it on a daily basis, and so they learn to call on God when you are not there to hold their hands. Building a godly family takes work on our part. Holiness doesn’t come without real change in our lives. We have to be honest with ourselves and ask some difficult questions about what we are really doing as believers.

Where does God fit in your Christian life?
If you don’t go to church or fellowship with other believers, your child sees that it is not necessary to be a doer of the Word and “assemble yourselves.”
Read Hebrews 10:24-25

Do you have family devotions or prayer time each day?
Families that uplift one another in prayer are in agreement with God’s Word and He will answer their requests.
Read Matthew 18:18-20

Does your child see you pray with your spouse?
Read James 5:13 & 16 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Do you pray out loud at each meal no matter where you are eating?
“Bless this food and us that eats it” isn’t just a prayer of thanksgiving. Praying before your meal sanctifies your food to make it fit for your body to receive. It protects you from things that could possibly harm you.

Does your child or spouse see you read your Bible?
Do they really see you studying to show yourself approved before God as a person who trained His heirs up properly in the manner He has told you? Will you be ashamed when you see Him?
Read 2 Timothy 2:15

Do you openly praise God and sing to Him with rejoicing in your heart each day? Praise Him with Psalms 145-150

If you are not doing these things, your child knows exactly what your relationship with God is…it’s on the back burner and only comes out when there is an emergency. Can you afford to have your child running on emergency power? Emergency power and energy are temporary and not lasting. We need to build a relationship with God so our families can see it on a daily basis, and so they learn to call on God when you are not there to hold their hands. We want to make our families strong, not weaken them and become a crutch to them. Are we disabling or enabling our families for success and happiness? Begin today with renewing your relationship with Jesus Christ. Become God oriented in all that you do, and watch the changes emerge in your family. You, too, can have a godly family, but the change must start within you. (CHER WANDELL)

Prayer List: August 23, 2020

Sunday, (Aug 23) –Pray for the ministry of the Methodist Women (MW). During this time of Covid-19, many women are facing times of loneliness because they are housebound and their children are overseas, or are not able to visit them. Praise God that our MW ladies are working with other churches to visit these women. Pray that our women will bring comfort and God’s presence when they visit them, and for the women who are pre-believers, they will see the love of Christ in our MW ladies. Pray for God’s covering and protection upon the MW ladies when they go out visiting. Pray also that the MW ladies themselves will have a closer walk with the Lord during this time of the pandemic.

Monday, (Aug 24) – Pray that God will pour His Spirit upon all our families and anoint them for all that He has called them to be and to do. Pray that parents will build their families through a commitment to God and His Word, and that their priorities will be focused solely upon the Lord, and not upon the things of the world – even the good things. Pray that families will learn to rely on Christ completely to survive the storms of life. Pray that God will give parents a bifocal vision to not just care about their families, but to teach them to care for others too. Pray that parents will have a great relationship with their children, as Father God had with His Son, Jesus. Pray that children will imitate their parents as they imitate Christ.

Tuesday, (Aug 25) – Pray for the Nation: Pray that the dissolution of the Sabah state government will be upheld, and that state elections will go on as scheduled. Pray that all the candidates chosen for a new state government are God-fearing people with integrity, and of good character. Pray that they will be people who can bring justice, equality and freedom to the people, who have a vision on how to bring progress and improve the living standards of the Sabahans, and who can bring God’s dreams and desires for the land of Sabah.

Wednesday, (Aug 26) – Pray for the Orang Asli (OA) community in Peninsula Malaysia, and for the OA families in the faith that they will be strengthend to stand against the wiles, deceptions, threats, fear and the lies of the enemy through knowing God’s truth and actively engaging in spiritual warfare. Pray that God will enhance their affinity and interest in the Word of God, and they will continue to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ. Pray that the Lord will set them free from generational curses and the grip of animism, the occult and false religions. Pray that He will protect their rights and privileges, and keep them safe from the coronavirus during this time of the pandemic.

Thursday, (Aug 27) – Complacency and public apathy led to the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the northern region of Peninsula Malaysia, resulting in a surge of cases and the emergence of new clusters. Pray against this attitude of indifference in the rakyat, and pray that the public, businesses and eateries will take the responsibility to obey all the Covid-19 regulations to help curb the spiread of the virus, particularly when efforts are being made to revive the already battered national economy. Pray also that efforts of the health ministry to contain the newly discovered, and highly infectious Covid-19 virus mutation will be successful.

Friday, (Aug 28) – Pray for TRAC: Pray for Bentong, Christ Methodist Church (TRAC). The church resumed worship services on August 9, 2020. Although 45 seats are available, only about 30% were occupied. Pray that the church members will return to church as the church does not have pre-recording or live streaming worship services. Pray for the pastor, Rev Bernard Lazar as he ministers to the people.

Saturday, (Aug 29) – Pray for the World: The number of Covid-19 infections have surpassed 22 million in the world, and some countries have not been able to bring down the number of daily infections, while other countries that have eased restrictions reported new daily highest increases in coronavirus cases since coming out of lockdown. Pray that people will not let their guard down, but will do more to control the virus by physical distancing, staying out of crowds, wearing masks and washing hands. Pray also that an effective vaccine will be developed quickly.

Title: The Parable Of The Shrewd Manager
Scripture: Luke 16: 1 – 15
Preacher: Rev Jerry Eng

Sermon Notes:

1.0 What is a Parable?

(1) Dr. R.T. Kendall explains that a parable is
(a) “A simple story that illustrates a profound truth.”
(b) It is “building a bridge from the natural to the spiritual.”
(c) And, “it is to test our earnestness in seeking the things of God…”

(2) He also gives us clues to understand parables…
(a) Not all parables point to the same truth.
(b) Often a parable will have only one basic truth in mind, and
(c) “Not every detail of a parable has to have a meaning.”

2.1 The Manager Was To Be Dismissed, vv1-9.
(1) The Manager Is Charged ; vv1-2.
(2) The Manager’s Lamenting, vv3-4.
(3) The Manager’s Scheming, vv5-7.
(4) Surprise, Surprise! vv8-9.

3.0 Jesus Clarified Godly Stewardship, vv10-13
(1) Jesus then began to teach with the following truths, vv10-13.
(a) V10.
(b) V12.
(c) V13.

3.1 The Listening Pharisees Were Unsettled by Jesus, vv14-15
(1) Jesus did not hold back.
(a) Luke 16:14
(b) Luke 16:15.
(c) “What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight!”

3.1 The Listening Pharisees Were Unsettled by Jesus, vv14-15
(2) Luke 15 Provides three Parables.
(a) The Parable of the Lost Sheep, vv3-7.
(b) The Parable of the Lost Coin, vv8-10.
(c) The Parable of the Lost Son, vv11-31.

Note: In all three there were great celebrations but seemingly not so for the Pharisees!

3.2 Watch Out In The Applications
“The characters of the steward and the man whose possessions he managed are both unsavoury and questionable. Jesus is not exhorting us to follow the behaviour of any of them but is trying to expound on “a larger principle.”

And, what then is the larger principle?
Again, let me read vv10-13.
E.g. Christians collected food and money to help…

4.0 Summary And Conclusion
(a) Jesus reminds us in Matt. 6:19-21. Read.
(b) Jesus is encouraging His followers to be generous with their wealth in this life so that in the life to come their new friends will received them “into eternal dwellings.”

Eg. 1. A Couple And Invitation To Lunch.

Eg. 2. The Current Pandemic where Christians have gathered food, clothing and money to help those who have been affected. Some have asked about Christ and the Gospel!

Dr. Kendall reminds us that one of the purposes of the Parables “is to test our earnestness in seeking the things of God.”

Our Lord Jesus says to you and me lovingly and clearly to invest in the “Heavenly Bank”. The returns are beyond our imagination! We will not be disappointed. And where your money is there your heart will be also!

How To Be Biblically Shrewd With Your Money

In the Parable of the Shrewd Manager, Jesus doesn’t praise the manager’s dishonesty, but He does praise his shrewdness. What is shrewdness? To be shrewd means you’re smart, strategic, and resourceful. You see a problem clearly, you know what needs to be done, and then you figure out how to do it. God wants you to learn how to be biblically shrewd with your money for the rest of your life.

From the story, we can learn four things that we shouldn’t do with our money.

1. Don’t waste your money.
Luke 16:1 says, “A report came that the manager was wasting his employer’s money” . Because everything you have belongs to God and is a gift from Him — including your money — you have to be careful not to waste what belongs to your Master.

2. Don’t love your money.
You’ve got to decide if God is going to be number one in your life or if making a lot of money will be your main goal in life. You cannot serve both.

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Luke 16:13).

3. Don’t trust your money.
I don’t care how much money you’ve got — you can always lose it. The manager learned this pretty quickly in Luke 16:3: “Now what? My boss has fired me.”

If you want to be secure, the center of your life has to be built around something that can never be taken from you. And there’s only one thing that you can never lose: God’s love for you.

4. Don’t expect your money to satisfy.
If you think having more will make you happier, more secure, or more valuable, you are seriously misguided, because money will never satisfy: “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income” (Ecclesiastes 5:10).

That’s why Jesus says in Luke 12:15, “Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own” . (RICK WARREN)

ETERNAL DWELLINGS

Here’s the basic point of the Parable of the Shrewd Manager: Don’t worry about being a shrewd investor in this age, where you can provide a future that will only fail. Instead, be a really shrewd investor by investing in people’s lives. Use your resources to do as much good as you can for the glory of God and the eternal good of others — others who will go before you and welcome you home.
(JOHN PIPER)
