Prayer List: November 29, 2020

Sunday, (Nov 29) – Praise God that Jesus will come back again in great glory and power, and establish His everlasting Kingdom. Pray that we will not allow ourselves to become entangled with the things of this world, nor allow our hearts to be weighed down with the anxieties of life, that in so doing, our watchfulness for the second coming of Christ will be diminished. Pray that the Holy Spirit will revive our hearts and give us a fresh sense of urgency that produces greater devotion to the Lord and a living-out of our faith, ministering the love of Christ in word and deed. Pray that we will endure to the end that we may join in on that great day with those who are given the crown of life.

Monday, (Nov 30) – Praise God for the hope that we in Christ Jesus, because on that first Christmas, God gave us the gift of hope wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. Pray that we will cling on to Christ, our gift of hope even as the Advent season begins in the midst of a pandemic, with everything seeming to fall apart around us. Pray that we will not lose hope, but trust that God is producing in us great endurance through the hard places, and that He is building spiritual muscle in us. Pray that we will press in close to His presence, and no matter what obstacles we are facing, we choose hope. Pray that we will share this hope we have in Christ with those who are in despair.

Tuesday, (Dec 1) – Pray for the Nation: Even as the Members of Parliament will continue to debate on the national Budget 2021, pray for wisdom to prevail and justice and righteousness to flow like a river. Pray that all our political leaders will put aside their personal agendas, and work together towards fairer measures in the budget, and adjust it accordingly so that the poor and disadvantaged will get more financial help to alleviate their distress, and also for adequate allocation to fight the Covid-19 situation. Pray also that during this rainy season, there will be no massive flooding, so that people will not have to deal with having to manage floods on top of the pandemic.

Wednesday, (Dec 2) – Praise God for the high number of daily Covid-19 recoveries last week. Pray for Top Glove Corporation Bhd, which has seen a high number of daily Covid-19 infections, that the enhanced movement control order imposed on its factories will be effective to curb the spread of Covid-19 and safeguard the well-being of its employees, their families and the general public. Pray that its factories that have been closed will soon be able to reopen as Top Glove is the largest manufacturer of surgical gloves in the world, and with the world’s demand for gloves increasing significantly due to the pandemic, prolonged closure of the factories will impact our nation’s economy, and also the pandemic.

Thursday, (Dec 3) – Praise God for the Orang Asli(OA) Ministry in our church, that 7 of our church members are doing online tutoring for the secondary OA school students, as well as the Year 6 students who will be moving up to secondary school next year. Pray that the new wifi system that was installed will work well so that the lessons will proceed smoothly. As all the 10 OA students will be doing the online lessons in the OA Pastor Noraini’s house, pray that she will be able to supervise them, and that the students will be excited, interested and diligent towards their studies.

Friday, (Dec 4) – Pray for TRAC: There will be several TRAC pastors who will be going on transfer in 2021. Some transfers involve moving from one state to another. Pray for God’s protection upon all the pastor and families concerned as the transfers this year are more complicated given the worrying number of daily Covid-19 cases now in Malaysia. Pray also that the the receiving churches will welcome their new pastors and their families with warmth, and that relationships will develop well over time.

Saturday, (Dec 5) – Pray for the World: Pray for South Korea as the nation has seen a surge in daily Covid-19 cases, sparking fears of a major third wave. Pray that the health authorities will be able to contain the infections. Pray also for the US, where millions defied the travel warning for last Thusday’s Thanksgiving holiday, and pressed ahead with their travel plans amid skyrocketing Covid-19 cases and deaths. Pray that by God’s grace, the Covid-19 situation will not blow up into a national crisis.

Title: Being Calm In The Lord
Scripture: Psalm 131: 1 – 3
Preacher: Rev Ashok Amarasingham

Sermon Notes:

1) Introduction
1.1 My transfer to KL Wesley in 2021.

1.2 Focus for Today
As the pandemic escalates, let us surrender our anxieties to God. We need to deliberately/purposefully rest in God and find calm in God.

2) The Pilgrim Searches His Soul While Journeying to Jerusalem
2.1 The eager worshipping pilgrim recognises that the desire to exalt God must be first grounded on the state of the heart.

2.2 The worshipping pilgrim knew the importance of having a sober estimate of himself (Psalm 131: 1).

2.3 The opposite (upturned heart & eyes not raised too high) is pride & arrogance.

2.4 The pilgrim is sober to know that he should not be preoccupied with “things that are too great for men”.

3) The Pilgrim Has Exchanged His Self-Focused Pursuits for Calm in His God
3.1 The psalm depicts an excellent simile…as calm as a weaned child (Psalm 131: 2)

3.2 A caring mother knows that her child needs to rely on solid food for the next phase…growth.

3.3 However the toddler is still loved by his mother and he is calm and secure.

3.4 Practical Application

4) Conclusion
O Israel, put your hope in God, both now and forevermore (Psalm 131: 3).

Coronavirus, Psalm 131, And The Faithful Father

“Help me with my helmet?” Haddon asks as I stare blankly into a sea of disorganized items in our garage. I fasten the buckle at his chin. His round cheeks press tightly against the strap. He is growing into a strong boy. But he hasn’t lost his baby face yet. He is wildly happy because after a few days of rain, we are finally taking a walk. We embark down the bike path until we reach the pedestrian crossing.

“Don’t touch the button! GERMS!” I quickly say as I dig my elbow into the call button at the crosswalk to avoid using my hands. “Why I’m not in school? Is it germs? Is it the sickness?” I inwardly kick myself. My panic about germs clearly caused him to think about this too. It’s already hit pretty close to us. The virus made its way into our school system, impacting a few staff members at several schools. The kids’ principal is infected. Sadly, a teacher in our county died. “Yes,” I answer.

His question now rapidly fades from his attention. As soon as we cross he swiftly peddles ahead on his scooter. He is unaware of what all this means. Each day we are faced with graphs of lines that only go up. We are shown future projections—of cases, deaths, jobs, and the economy. Most of us consume a daily diet of the latest news. We want to know what will happen next. There is such uncertainty.

I’m reminded of Psalm 131:1-2 “O Lord my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high. I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.”

Haddon doesn’t understand the chaos in our world and all the ramifications it entails. He doesn’t go to bed worried that his parents might not take care of him the next day. He knows when he awakes, he will be provided for. He rests in our faithfulness to him. Global pandemic or not, he knows that his mommy and daddy love him. He knows we’re going to care for him.

Similarly, David, the author of this Psalm, expresses a childlike faith. There were many times when he needed to trust God. We don’t know which circumstances he might be thinking of here. But it seems he’s personally experienced God’s steadfast Fatherly care. So much so, he’s resting in it like a calmed child.

Unlike my mothering, God’s faithfulness is holy and perfect. It’s rooted primarily in His character. For us, we have a vantage point David didn’t have: We can trust God because He’s supplied our greatest need through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

How severe will this crisis be? I don’t know. But we don’t have to figure it out—thinking of things too lofty for us. All we need to know is that whatever happens, God loves us. He’s going to care for us.

Most days, Haddon sweetly nestles close to me while I read a large stack of books to him. In these moments, he is quiet, still and content. He doesn’t know it. But his mom is taking notes. I’m learning from him how to trust in my Heavenly Father. “O Israel put your hope in the Lord, both now and forevermore.” Psalm 131:3 (GAIL EMERSON)

Prayer List: November 22, 2020

Sunday, (Nov 22) – Praise God for His loving care over us, and His promise that He will always be with us. Pray that He will increase our faith so we will turn all our cares over to Him and let Him have complete control of our lives. Pray that Jesus will be enough for us to keep our souls contented, tranquil and quiet like a child in its mother’s arms. Pray that our Father will help us to seek contentment in everything we do; and when things do not work out the way we want, we will still find contentment in Christ. Pray that we will learn to rely on God’s promises and Christ’s power to stay contented whatever our circumstances or situations.

Monday, (Nov 23) – Hospital beds for Covid-19 in the Klang Valley were significantly increased after the recent surge in new cases; and health authorities opined that it will be weeks or even months before the Helath Ministry’s target of an infectivity level of below 0.5 can be achieved. Pray for wisdom for the health authorities and government to put together proper public health measures, and for all individuals to comply with the strict rules and SOPs, so that the target of a 0.5 infectivity level will be achieved as soon as possible. Pray also that employers, especially those in factories and construction sites, will protect their businesses by taking strict measures to ensure that all their workers are free of Covid-19.

Tuesday, (Nov 24) – Pray for the Nation: Pray that that the Holy Spirit will preside over the Parliament sittings so that justice, righteousness, responsibility and accountability will be restored in the nation. Pray that as the MPs debate over Budget 2021, they will put aside personal agendas, differences and obsession with power, and focus on passing a budget that will really help the needs faced by all of the people regardless of race, encourage economic growth in the nation, and benefit the poorer sector of the rakyat.

Wednesday, (Nov 25) – Praise God for the Prayer Ministry in Klang Wesley that continues to hold zoom prayer meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday mornings, and Thursday night since the MCO began in March. Praise God also for all the people who have faithfully joined these prayer meetings every week. Pray that God will continue to bless His people with strength and power to keep seeking Him for the needs of our church, the nation and the world. Pray that the Holy Spirit will motivate more people to join these online prayer meetings.

Thursday, (Nov 26) – Pray for the Worship Ministry of our church because this has been a difficult year as the worship teams have to cope with pre-recorded and live stream worship services, besides having to sing with masks on. Thank God that they have always given their best to the Lord. Pray that they will continue to deepen their relationship with Christ, and spend time to connect with Him during this season when they have to spend more time at home. Pray that the Lord will continue to refresh and renew them so they will serve Him out of the joy and fullness of their relationship with Him.

Friday, (Nov 27) – Pray for TRAC: Congratulations to Rev Joshua Khong on his election as the new President of TRAC (2021-2024). Pray for him and his family as they move to their new residence in TRAC office, PJ. Pray for a smooth transition between one President and another. Pray also that God’s wisdom be upon Rev Joshua Khong as he leads the Conference. Pray that he will work well with his team of new leaders in TRAC.

Saturday, (Nov 28) – Pray for the World: The Covid-19 cases and deaths continue to rise all over the world, the latest being an outbreak in South Australia. Pray for wisdom for the health authorities and governments in the nations of the world to effectively cope with this new wave of infections. Praise God for answered prayers – that medical scientists are getting positive results with regards to the development of a vaccine. Pray that God will bless their work and that there will be an effective vaccine to combat the Covid-19 virus by next year.

When Things Are Weak, God Can Show His Strength

The prophet Haggai wrote to the people of Judah after they returned from their exile. Over 70 years had passed since Nebuchadnezzar defeated their city, destroyed Solomon’s beautiful temple, and burned the gates of the city with fire. Most of the people living during the days of Haggai were born in Babylon. They had heard stories from their parents about Jerusalem and the temple but only a few of the oldest people had ever seen it.

Now they returned to Jerusalem and were busy building houses for themselves and rebuilding the temple. The temple of the Lord, however, had been neglected. Haggai pointed out the people’s failure to rebuild the temple and the price they were paying for that failure. “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build My house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” said the LORD. “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declared the LORD Almighty. “Because of My house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”

Some time had passed. The people had taken to heart the Word of the Lord through Haggai, so they began work on the new temple. Unfortunately, the older people who had seen Solomon’s temple were sad; this new temple seemed pathetic by comparison. The LORD asked, “Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?”

Solomon’s temple was a treasure, an architectural sight to behold. The poverty of the people at this point in Israel’s history prevented them from building anything like what Solomon had made. They did the best they could with what they had, but their best wasn’t even close to Solomon’s best work.

God sent the prophet Haggai with this message to encourage the people to keep working. It was true that the new temple would seem like a joke compared to the one it replaced but that was not important. The important thing is that God was with them: “‘For I am with you,’ declared the LORD Almighty. ‘This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’”

Then He made promises to them. “I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,” said the LORD Almighty. God made the most important promise which was that He would be there; His glory would inhabit the new temple just as it had the old one. He would provide the money for it, too: “‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declared the LORD Almighty.”

Finally, God said that this temple would someday be greater, more glorious than Solomon’s temple had been: “‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ said the LORD Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declared the LORD Almighty.’” That glory might not have been architectural but it would be better–God would work there making peace.

There are times when God’s work seems to take a step (or more than that) backward. What was once exciting, powerful, growing, and wonderful becomes something much less than any of those adjectives. It is naturally discouraging to God’s people when that happens. God, however, wants us to know that He uses small things. When things are weak, God can show His strength.

Are you discouraged about anything in your life because it just isn’t anywhere near what it used to be or could be? This is your opportunity, then, to believe in God and ask Him to work. God can take even the most meager things and make them great, so ask Him to glorify Himself that way. (BRIAN JONES)
