Recorded Live Streaming Worship Service – 6th Sept 2020

Title: Renewing Ourselves in God’s Greatness
Scripture: Isaiah 40: 27 – 31
Preacher: Mr Yap Chee Kai

SERMON OUTLINE:

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 A Holocaust-survivor, Viktor Frankl, testified “hope” in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning–to live beyond the barbed wire is what makes the difference between the living and the dead.

1.2 In The Imitation of Christ, Thomas Kempis says, “it is vanity to seek after, and trust in, the riches that shall perish, for they who follow after their own fleshly lusts, defile the conscience and destroy the grace of God”.

1.3 In today’s passages, Isaiah uncovers three simple steps from turning away our despair towards renewal in hope of God’s greatness.

2.0 OUR DESPAIR (v.27)
2.1 Verse 27 asserted a poignant tone to both the prisoners and the Jews in their captivity.

2.2 Isaiah admonishes us the danger of two kinds of doubt. One is the struggling faith, and the latter is the cynical defiance.

2.3 Isaiah’s explication on the danger of two kinds of doubt; a struggling faith and a cynical defiance.

2.4 God reminded the Jews about their identity and His covenant.

2.5 Reflecting on Jean’s passing of what it truly means by surrendering entirely to the will of God.

2.6 Just like Jean and Job, God’s presence is our complete assurance, which leads us to His greatness.

3.0 GOD’S GREATNESS (vv.28–29)
3.1 Everything that matters in life hinges on who God is. Four things as illustrated by Isaiah in verse 28.

3.2 Firstly, God is eternal, everlasting: He is above both space and time.

3.3 Secondly, God is the Creator of everything.

3.4 Thirdly, God never faints or becomes weary: He is always at work.

3.5 And fourthly, God is wise and his understanding is unsearchable.

3.6 God not only shares his strength with us, but also renews us in our weakness (v.29).

3.7 The words “faint” and “be/grow weary” is the key to these passages–occurring seven times.

3.8 Who are “the faint” (v.29)? They were the complainers (v.27).

3.9 How are these people, faint, weak and weary? They are weak in faith in their spiritual life and in courage.

3.10 Yet, God wants to renew us just like the weak and weary–to give us hope and a future.

3.11 How does the God do this? This leads us to the final point in the last two verses.

4.0 OUR RENEWAL (vv.30–31)
4.1 In verse 30, Isaiah warns us it is folly to depend on our strength. There is power beyond ourselves and we can experience it.

4.2 In the final verse, Isaiah is not merely enabling those who draw strength from his promise, [period]….no, but to do the impossible.

4.3 Our confidence in God is not a matter of willpower but of expectancy.

4.4 The key word is “wait”. To wait for the Lord means to live with tension of promises revealed, but yet to be fulfilled.

4.5 It is waiting with eager longing. It is “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, press on toward the goal…’ (Phil.3:13, 14). It is steady, bumpy progress, yet we are transformed into Christ likeness “from one degree of glory to another” (2 Cor.3:18).

4.6 The “how” question is answered in this word “wait”.

4.7 The question is: are you willing to wait, to let God set his pace? Or are you such a controller that you can’t live on God’s terms? Does your heart prize him as worth the wait?

4.8 Consider this church; following Christ is not a way to cut a deal with God for an easier life now. Imperatively, it is what renews us to live for our eternal reward in the future.

4.9 How can we experience more of what Isaiah has to offer us today? We need to ask ourselves two critical pastoral questions.

4.10 Firstly, do I believe that God can choose a quitter like me and make him a hero? And secondly, have I deliberately shifted the loyalty of my heart from the false glory of this world to the coming glory of the Lord?

4.11 God has promised Christ’s salvation for us. Is that where we ought to stake our joy and hope?

5.0 CONCLUSION
5.1 Let me close with Jean’s reflection.

5.2 The story offers us a profound pastoral lesson: “when we serve the sick, we are tied to a God who cares about human suffering . . . as a result of my malignancy experience, I have drawn to the world of the sick, forlorn, and terrified. I desire to use my wounds as a source to lead others to healing, to which I imply that I desire to know Christ and His comfort. . .and I can be well simply by diligence in being who I am right then and there”.

5.3 The lesson offers us, we can be simply well when are ill–the wholeness and hope in spite of infirmity.

5.4 If we “will” just like Viktor Frankl and Jean that longing for God and submission to his will, God will not just lift us and renew us but also He will transform us into His greatness.

5.5 What would be your response? Are you willing to live beyond the barbed wire, to set your eyes on things above and allow God to renew your spirit to experience His greatness? Let us pray.

Waiting Upon The Lord

Waiting upon the Lord means spending time regularly in God’s presence. In practical terms, we wait upon the Lord when we commune with Him through His Word and prayer. We should live our lives at all times in God’s presence through His Word and prayer. King David who communed with God testified in Psalm 16:11, ‘in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.’ As you maintain such blessed communion with God everyday you will have an ever-flowing supply of spiritual strength – the strength that you need to persevere and press onward no matter what difficulties and trials you face. This, dear friends, is the secret of living your Christian life successfully.

Please do not say that you don’t have the time to do this. You must plan it into your daily schedule, because it is the source of your spiritual strength. If you do not make it a priority, you will not be able to last long in doing whatever God wants you to do for Him. If you are young please do not think that your youthful energy can carry you through. As Isaiah 40:30 says, ‘Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall.’ If you do not wait upon the Lord you will eventually become very tired and frustrated. You may even burn yourself out and drop out of the race entirely!

But if you make the commitment to wait upon the Lord, there are 4 wonderful things that you can look forward to – Firstly, you will renew your strength. This strength is the willpower to persevere in doing God’s will even under the most trying and difficult circumstances of life.

Secondly, you will mount up with wings as eagles. Your spiritual life will take you upward to heights of glory that you have never known before! There are things of the spiritual realm that God has prepared for those who love Him that no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard and no heart has ever imagined. These are the deep things of God which are revealed to us by His Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9,10).

Thirdly, you will run and not be weary. This run refers to the spiritual race that God calls every Christian to run – a race of endurance that can only be completed successfully by looking to Jesus who is the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1,2).

Fourthly, you will walk and not faint. This walk probably refers to the daily conduct and testimony of your life before the world, that will enable you to be a fruitful Christian, leading sinners to find salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Now that you have seen these 4 wondrous results of waiting upon the Lord, why do you still wait to commit yourself to do it? (REV CHARLES SEET)

Prayer List : September 5-6, 2020

Sunday, (Sep 6) – Pray that God will help us to learn to quietly wait upon Him and to rest in His love, knowing that He has scheduled every day of our lives. Pray that He will keep us from fretting and worry, but rather choose to spend time in His Word and His presence, for He has promised that those who wait on Him will renew their strength, soar like eagles, run and not grow weary. Pray that we will not try to do things in our own strength, as we are so often prone to do, but to consciously abide in Him and cast all our cares upon Him. Pray that the Lord will teach us to truly abide in Him, moment by moment, and to learn to wait for Him as our first option, rather than as a last resort.

Monday, (Sep 7) – Pray for the Church in Malaysia, that as God’s people we will shift our focus and priority more on the things of God that will last eternally rather than things on the earth which serve us only temporally, and that we will serve God and His purposes in our lifetime. Pray that believers will adopt a submissive spirit, be transparent to the body of Christ, and practice spiritual accountability as an avenue for a spiritual check-up, so we can continue to gain wisdom and understanding and magnify Christ in all situations. Pray that we will live in victory over difficult situations, and people will begin to see the power of God being manifested in our lives through the Gospel.

Tuesday, (Sep 8) – Pray for the Nation: Pray for all Malaysians not to be influenced or tempted by material gains, power and greed. Pray that the Lord will expose and foil the plans of those whose hearts are for their own ambitious schemes to gain power, fame and wealth, and that He will squash all their wicked plans. As people are struggling with the RMCO, speak life to those who are in depression and who are suicidal, and blessing and good health to those who are sick and bedridden. Pray that God will help us overcome this present storm. Pray that He will bless our economy and stabilise the government.

Wednesday, (Sep 9) – Praise God that since the pandemic, 25,000 couples worldwide have done the Alpha Online Marriage Course, and marriages have been mended / enhanced. Pray that as Alpha Malaysia facilitates the Online Marriage and Parenting Courses, many people will attend the courses, especially those who are struggling in their marriages. Pray that parents and carers of youths will join so as to understand their teens better, and improve their relationship with them. Pray that through the courses, broken relationships in marriages and in families will be restored and fortified. Pray that pre-believers will also join the courses and be blessed with healthier and happier homes and marriages.

Thursday, (Sep 10) – As the RMCO has been extended to December 31, 2020, and new clusters of Covid-19 infections continue to emerge, pray that the rakyat will exercise patience and fortitude and continue to strictly adhere to the SOPs in order to combat the pandemic. Malaysia has imposed an entry ban on citizens from countries recording more than 150,000 cases of Covid-19, although Malaysians in high-risk countries can return, but they will have to undergo a 14-day mandatory quarantine. Pray that with all these new restrictions, the Covid-19 situation will be brought under control.

Friday, (Sep 11) – Pray for TRAC: Pray for the TRAC Board of Nominations that will be finalising the names of nominated persons to serve for the next quadrennium (2021-2024) in TRAC. Pray that God will confirm in the hearts of a few more people to take up still vacant positions. Pray for TRAC President, Rev Dr T. Jeyakumar as he seeks the Lord to approach a few people to consider entering TRAC as pastors in 2021.

Saturday, (Sep 12) – Pray for the World: Even as many countries in the world continue to record high numbers of Covid-19 infections, pray for wisdom for the governments and health experts in these nations to find ways to keep the coronavirus from continuing to spread. As the pandemic has dragged on for so many months, pray for the people, medical professionals, caregivers, and researchers, that God will grant them perseverance, comfort and hope during this difficult time.

Title: Disciples Must Be United Following The Humility Of Christ
Scripture Verse: Philippians 2: 1 – 11
Preacher: Rev Ashok Amarasingham

Sermon Notes:

1) INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Need to Return to Church to Worship God (Plan A’)

1.2 Focus for Today
As Christ made himself nothing and took on servanthood, so too must we, His Church. Emptying our pride and embracing humility will produce solid unity in the church.

2) Unity in the Church is not a Given Because of Satan.

2.1 Satan is defeated but is still alive. He is out to thwart the Mission of Christ through the Church.

2.2 Paul connects Philippians 2: 1 (using “therefore”) to the end of Philippians 1 (v27-30) to draw from being “in Christ”.

2.3 Paul goes on to state what needed to be avoided ie “rivalry” and “conceit”. (Phil 2:3)

2.4 Only humility- meaning counting others better than yourself and being just so interested to meet others’ needs (as you meet your own need)- will defeat Satan’s ploy to destroy the church.

2.5 Practical Application

2.5.1 Have we kept the back door of our hearts open to Satan’s whispers- taking some self-glory (vainglory) in our service unto God?

2.5.2 Have we fully surrendered unto God decisions made in church that are based on collective wisdom of others (but against my viewpoint)?

3) We Must Follow the Perfect Example of Christ in Humility

3.1 Many scholars believe that Paul borrowed “Carmen Christi” (Hymn of Christ) in Philippians 2: 6-11 from early church liturgy.

3.2 Having the “mind of Christ” (attitude of Christ) is literally “to think as Christ thought”. (Phil 2:5)

3.3 The humility of Christ saw him willingly descend to become a human, and then even further to humiliation on the cross (Phil 2: 7-8).

3.4 Practical Application
3.4.1 UC, Berkeley Parents Network: Toddlers’ Rules of Possession…(selected ones)
1) If I like it, it is mine.
2) If I hold it, it is mine.
3) If I can take it from you, it is mine.
5) If it is mine, it must NEVER appear to be yours in anyway.
8) If I saw it first, it is mine.
10) However, if it broken, it is yours! (cf 1 Corinthians 13: 11)

3.4.2 As Christians do we latently exhibit the above rules, ever so subtlety?

3.4.3 Christ “emptied” His exalted deity to become a human, whereas we “empty our pride” to embrace servanthood.

How do you constantly think…
* how others can complement my deficiencies (in church) and I bless them for this?

* how can I surrender my judgmental and prideful self-glory thoughts to love others (despite their ugliness)?

4) Conclusion/Summary

The Mindset Of Christ

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as
Christ Jesus .(Philippians 2:5)

Philippians 2:5-8, on the glorification of our Lord Jesus, is the Mt. Everest among the mountain peaks of revelation concerning the Person of Christ, the amazing story of how the eternal Son of God stepped out of eternity into time, and became a Man as God intended man to be. These few short verses capture some of the most amazing truths that have ever confronted the minds of men.

There is a temptation as we study this passage to remove it from its context and treat it as a passage on Theology. We must never forget that this passage is set against the background of two quarreling ladies in the church at Philippi. That quarrel was threatening to destroy the unity of the whole church. The apostle Paul has made it clear that the secret of maintaining unity is humility. Wherever there is contentiousness, it is a revelation of the presence of pride. Pride, whether in a single individual life, in a family, a church, in government, or a whole nation, always destroys, divides, sets one person against another, perpetuates conflict, breaks up marriages and partnerships and unions of every sort.

When people are quarreling, the path to peace is to seek humility, rather than to assess arguments and weigh one against another, because when we do that, we run into relative values which are so subjective it’s impossible to come to a conclusion. When tempers are hot, passions are aroused, and patience is strained, how can you get people to calm down and start thinking about a humble attitude? How do you stop the urge to defend yourself, and the stubborn insistence of what we call our rights? The answer is in this marvelous passage concerning Christ.

Christians can achieve peace — not merely a truce, or cold war, or an agreed settlement, but peace, which is a mutual sense of wrongdoing. Each person acknowledging they have contributed to it, and burying the past in forgiveness. The result is a deeper sense of acceptance than ever before. When we come to this point the quarrel actually helps unity rather than destroying it. It will result in deeper understanding and love than before. That is what the apostle Paul is wanting for these two ladies in Philippi and those in the church who were taking sides with them.

For Reflection:
The account of the humility of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is totally counter-intuitive to this world’s system, exposing the total folly of our own pride. Have we grasped the transcendent beauty of authentic humility? (RAY STEDMAN)

Prayer List: August 30, 2020

Sunday, (Aug 30) – Praise God for the wonderful example of true humility that is seen in the life and ministry of Christ, who lived His life in humble submission and obedience to the Father. Thank God that we are in union with Christ, and we have the mind of Christ. Pray that we will choose to submit to the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit in our lives so that He will help us develop the fruit of humility, meekness and goodness that was so evident throughout the life of Jesus. Pray that the Spirit will help us not to do anything out of selfish ambition or foolish vanity, but rather that we will develop the godly grace to regard the needs and desires of others as being more important than our own.

Monday, (Aug 31) – Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower the Church of Malaysia to hold fast to Christ, and not let our faith be weakened by the temptations of the world. Pray that believers will commit every aspect of their lives to Jesus, and in areas where we have lowered our Christian standards and allowed compromise to set in, we will humbly confess them before the Lord, and seek His grace to help us rededicate our lives to Him. Pray that pastors and church leaders will teach and preach sound doctrine to their members, and the people will hear the Word of God through their hearts, and allow the Word to shape their standard of belief and behaviour.

Tuesday, (Sep 1) – Pray for the Nation: As our nation has just celebrated our 63rd Independence Day, give thanks to God that despite the political instability caused by weakened coalitions, Malaysia remains peaceful and well placed to navigate through these unprecedented times brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and the global trade wars. Pray for full freedoms to be accorded to all peoples of Malaysia to enjoy; such as religious freedoms, social, educational and economic equality and fair play among races and religions, so that the symbolism of Merdeka and a free people are honoured.

Wednesday, (Sep 2) – The locality of Amanjaya district in Kedah has been put under strict lockdown indefinitely in a move to control the spread of Covid-19, and residents will not be allowed to leave the locality, while outsiders will not be allowed in. Pray that members of the public will be patient, and exercise social responsibility, giving full cooperation to the frontliners, and strictly adhering to the restrictions brought about by the SOPs of the enhanced MCO. Pray that God will grant success to the health ministry and the transmission of the virus will be effectively curbed.

Thursday, (Sep 3) – Pray for the Orang Asli (OA) new believers in our nation that they will bear good fruit as they grow and mature in Christ. Pray that God’s Word will take root in their hearts and help them overcome bad habits and negative influences from the former way of life, and from unbelieving relatives and friends. Pray that they will hold fast to their faith in Christ, and not turn to charms and fetishes, to seek healing in God, and not resort to seeking help from the village bomoh. Pray that as they live new lives in Christ, they will be effectives witnesses for Him to the pre-believers in their villages.

Friday, (Sep 4) – Pray for the Methodist Church in Malaysia: The General Conference (highest executive body) of the Methodist Church in Malaysia was meant to be held in a hotel in PJ from September 8-11, 2020. However, due to the current pandemic, the GC will only be held on September 8, online. Pray that the 6 different Conferences (meeting at different hubs both in West & East Malaysia) will be successful in having online GC, and especially in the voting system – that it will be trouble free. Pray for the election of a new Methodist bishop (2021-2024). Our current bishop, Rev Dr Ong Hwai Teik, cannot stand again for the bishop’s post due to his age. Pray that the new bishop will be a person under God’s mighty empowering and will be obedient to God almighty.

Saturday, (Sep 5) – Pray for the World: India is the country hardest hit in Asia by Covid-19, and its confirmed cases will soon cross the 4 million mark, with more than 65,000 deaths. Pray for God’s wisdom upon the Indian government as it struggles to address the rising numbers of infections, and the devastation of health services and livelihoods, with tens of millions of people having lost their jobs.
