Prayer Lists: July 11-12, 2020

1. Praise God that we have eternal life simply by trusting in Christ’s offer of salvation by grace through faith in what He has done on the cross. Pray that our ultimate goal in life is to know Christ, and to continually grow in intimacy with Him. Pray that we will never place anything above our relationship with Him, and that periodically we will take time to reflect on our priorities in life. Pray that the Lord will give us courage, grace and strength to reorder our priorities so that we will set aside time each day to meet with Christ through the study of His Word and prayer, knowing that Christ is more than worth the sacrifice. Praise God that the power that raised Christ from the dead will help us live morally renewed and regenerated lives. Pray that we will choose daily to die to our old sinful nature, and embrace the resurrection power to walk in newness of life.

2. The Elshaddai Refugee Learning Centre (ERLC) will be starting school on July 15, 2020. Praise God for protecting the staff as well as the students from the Covid-19 disease. Thank God for the good response from various sources to the ERLC’s appeal for funds to provide foodstuff and cash vouchers to needy refugee families that were struggling financially during the lockdown. Praise God that the Ministry of Education has allowed the refugee learning centres in the nation to reopen, and thank God for Klang Wesley and St Barnabas Church for allowing their premises to be used. Pray for God’s protection upon the students and teachers that they will stay safe and healthy. Pray for all the co-workers who have been trained to do diaspora disciple makers that they will put their training into practice, and not only make disciples for Christ, but also make disciple makers out of the disciples. Pray also for Elshaddai Centre Berhad’s evangelistic work in Sabah and areas in the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia, that God will continue to bless and proper the work.

3. Praise God that many churches in the nation have started to reopen, and church members, including children aged 12 and below, and those above 70, are allowed to come back to church to worship the Lord during the weekends, although there are strict SOPs that have to be adhered to. Pray that the worshippers will comply with all the regulations. Although our restored worship services are so different and restricted, our online options so available and convenient, pray that those who do not need to stay home for health reasons will choose to come together as God’s family to worship Him, and sing together (something we have missed doing for the last 4 months) and glorify God, enthroning Him in our hearts and encouraging each other. Pray that our physical presence will bring joy and hope to one another, as we recognise that we are not independent, but interdependent of each other in the family of God. Pray that God’s hand of protection will be upon us as we come together, and He will enable us to stay safe and healthy.

4. Praise God that from July 22, 2020 onwards, all primary and secondary school students will be back in school. Pray that the children and youths will adapt well to the new norms of school life, and will comply with all the standard operating procedures (SOPs), even though it means they are not able to mix freely with their school friends. Pray that they will be obedient to their teachers and school authorities. Pray for wisdom, grace, and creativity for the teachers, as they have to cope with teaching in the new norm, and ensuring that the students are following the SOPs. Pray that God will protect all the students and teaching staff against any infection as they take responsibility to follow all the regulations of the Health Ministry. Pray also for the rest of the nation, that the public will remember that although the Covid-19 situation has improved tremendously, the virus is still around. Pray that the rakyat will not behave as if the pandemic is over, but they will continue to comply with the SOPs set up by the Health Ministry, and live with these new norms to win the fight against Covid-19.

5. Pray for God’s sovereign hand and blessing over our nation’s direction and resources. Pray for spiritual breakthroughs in the present political strife and economic uncertainty. Pray that the evil principalities and powers stoking disunity, corruption and deception will be totally defeated and ejected from the nation. Pray that in His mercy and grace, God will transform Malaysia to be a beacon for truth, justice and righteousness. Pray that the rakyat will be given full rights to religious and economic freedom. Pray for the promotion of racial harmony and unity in the nation. Pray for God’s sovereign protection upon the nation from secret plotting and witchcraft. Pray also that the Lord will bless the Prime Minister with good health.

6. The severity of the COVID-19 impact on business is unprecedented in our nation, and the effects of troubled sectors on employment are undermining the economy. Many people are getting laid-off and retrenched. Pray that as we lift up the economic situation into God’s divine hands, He will lift up the economy so that businesses will be rebuilt, jobs will be restored, and the nation will flourish again. Pray for an outpouring of God’s gift of creative entrepreneurship at this crucial time in our nation, so that new ideas and businesses may be birthed. Pray that those whose financial status are still solid will respond generously to those in need, and be willing to unselfishly help others, and provide helpful economic connections for those who are struggling to survive. Pray especially for God to provide for the refugees and migrant workers in our nation, who are among those who are most badly affected financially by the pandemic.

7. As the death of George Floyd sparked world-wide protests against racism, pray that God will bring racial healing and equality to all nations in the world. Pray that the Lord will open our hearts to repent of racist attitudes, behaviours and speech that demean others; that He will open our ears to hear the cries of those wounded by racial discrimination, and their passionate appeals for change. Pray that God will open our eyes to see the racial injustices and inequalities that happen daily, and that we will not ignore these things, but confront them, and boldly intervene where possible. Pray that He will open our minds to understand that all people are made in His image and we are to love them. Pray that God will strengthen our resolve to make amends, where possible, for past injustices, and to right the wrongs of history. Pray that He will fill us with courage to seek to heal wounds, build bridges, forgive and be forgiven, and establish peace and equality for all in our communities.

Message Notes:

1. Introduction

1.1 We await the “MCO” term no longer in Malaysia.

1.1.1 Not all of MCO has been disappointing. There are positives to bless us. St Paul’s life also had Ups and Downs.

1.1.2 Disappointments include family members stuck overseas, business temporarily stopped or others, permanently. The church LCEC released funds to provide 573 food packages for the poor regardless of nationality, race or religion.

1.1.3 Another disappointment was not being able to worship God in church, no internet, no smartphone, etc.

1.1.4 Two weeks ago, I set this topic to comfort those 12 & under and 70 & over. But PTL, the SOP was loosened so all ages can theoretically come back to church. The twist was I myself faced disappointment in the past week so the sermon was meant for me!

1.2 Focus for Today
Disappointments are like unwanted guests at your doorstep. Like St Paul, learn to be content by being in Christ. Receive Christ’s strength and bless others with God’s promises.

2. Paul Had Reasons to be Disappointed

2.1 Paul was under house arrest (imprisonment) in Rome (Phil 1: 7, 13, 17).
Also Philippians 1: 21 “For to me to live is Christ to die is gain”

Q: Are we willing to go to be with Jesus but eager to stay OR eager to go to be with Jesus but willing to stay?

2.2 Other than the church of Philippi, no church financially supported Paul as a missionary (Phil 4:15).

2.2.1 Paul was a tent maker

2.2.3 Power of godly parenting: More is caught than taught…parents can role model to children about honouring God’s servants.

2.3 There were times that Paul was hungry (Phil 4:12).

3. St Paul’s Secret of Dealing with Disappointments was Being Contented in Christ

3.1 The church at Philippi for a long time did not support Paul financially (Phil 4:10)

3.2 St Paul learned contentment (Phil 4:11-13).
Matt 11:28-30 says: Come to me all who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…

3.3 Focus on Blessing Others

3.3.1 Paul shifts focus onto the church at Philippi.
“Yet it was kind of you to share my troubles” (Phil 4:14)

3.3.2 As a young church they excelled in giving (to support Paul) (Phil 4:16)

3.3.3 Paul sought the good fruit of the church in Philippi.

3.3.4 Paul uses sacred words/pictures to describe the gift of the church eg. “fragrant offering”, “sacrifice acceptable to God”.

3.4 Application

3.4.1 Recent TRAC Webinar on “Stress”, Bishop Solomon, Bishop Ong Hwai Teik & Rev Chew shared. It was mentioned that pastoral ministry is tough not so much due to workload but due to people. Pastor Ashok’s note: Pastors also bring stress to the parish!

3.4.2 However St Paul chose to focus upon Christ (Phil 4:19). The older we get, the more loving and kind we should be to others and easily forgive others (following Jesus’ example).

3.4.3 Nobody can rob our privilege of connecting with Christ always…whether no internet, no smartphone or our loneliness of staying alone at home.

3.4.4 Lastly, always look for the goodness in others. Pastor Ashok encouraged his “Home Worship Resources Team” not to pick on the minor faults in others but to celebrate effort put in (not only on perfection).

From The Pastor’s Desk

Next weekend, Klang Wesley will be opening her doors to everyone (with some exceptions) for the first time since the movement control order (MCO) began on March 18, 2020. Many have longed to see this day. However, the government still emplaces strict standard operating procedures (SOP) that prevent some people from coming back to church to worship God. This is why Klang Wesley’s virtual online worship service continues on in the month of July.

The home resources for worship first began as an initiative to get family members involved in the reading of Scriptures and other areas. I was told that the children felt honoured and privileged to be able to read from the Bible. Eventually we heard and catered to the need of some older people who found it easier to worship the Lord with “one click” of the YouTube link. Many chose to struggle and familiarize themselves with new Apps (for example, Zoom) in order to join prayer meetings, Cell Group meetings, etc. The strong motivation to learn and thus overcome barriers was there because people loved the Lord and wanted to be part of that virtual church despite the MCO.

Let us not forget the spiritual lessons that God has taught us during this MCO period in the years to come. Let us take courage to persist with spiritual disciplines that bring honour to God’s name.

The Secret Of Contentment

Many people want to be content in all circumstances, but they don’t know how. Some people don’t even believe it’s possible. If you think about it, there are probably people in your life who seem to be on a never-ending search for contentment. Do you know someone who is always looking for more or searching for inner peace? This is a popular concept today, but none of the self-help trends seem to get there. As you read Paul’s letter to the Church of Philippi, it is clear he learned the secret of true contentment, and like Paul, we too can have true contentment and joy in all circumstances.

The Difference Between Contentment and Complacency
First, don’t make the mistake of confusing contentment with complacency. Someone who is complacent is satisfied but often lacks awareness. As the pastor and Bible teacher Warren W. Wiersbe explains, “Contentment is not complacency, nor is it a false peace based on ignorance […] Contentment is not escape from the battle, but rather an abiding peace and confidence in the midst of the battle. ”Contentment is awareness of what is happening and the ability to remain at peace no matter the circumstances. Wiersbe further explains, “The word content actually means ‘contained.’ It is a description of the man whose resources are within him so that he does not have to depend on substitutes without. ”This is what Paul means when he learned contentment. He discovered through experience that he has everything needed because Christ lives within him.

Where We Find Contentment
“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”
– Philippians 4:11-12 How often does someone think “If I only had this, I would be content”? Far too often!
Ask anyone who has ever thought they would be content if they achieved some status or purchased a new toy how long that feeling of contentment lasted, and they will tell you, “Not long. ”Paul, on the other hand, shares with us how he has the secret for being content no matter the circumstances. It is important to note the following in these verses, “Learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” It did not happen as soon as he became a Christian. It was something he learned over time, much like how Christians learn God is faithful as they experience His faithfulness repeatedly. Because Paul had Christ within, he had peace within. In the conclusion of this letter, Paul identifies some of the reasons our faith in God leads to contentment.

The Providence of God
When we rest in the knowledge of God’s providence, we experience contentment. Wiersbe says it this way: “God’s providence simply means that God sees to it beforehand […] It is the working of God in advance to arrange circumstances and situations for the fulfilling of His purposes. ”Paul saw God’s hand in his ministry and the church of Philippi’s involvement in his life when he needed it the most. By recognizing “Life is not a series of accidents; it is a series of appointments (Wiersbe),” we can experience heavenly contentment.

The Power of God
“I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”
– Philippians 4:13
One of the most popular Bible verses appears in this section of Paul’s discussion of contentment. Paul essentially made this his motto. Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned. Think about that for a moment – while he was in prison, he was joyful and content. His life experiences taught him how Christ within gives him all he needs – including strength. In Wiersbe’s study, he discusses how our relationship with Christ gives us power. Wiersbe explains, “The most important part of the Christian’s life is the part that only God sees. Unless we draw on the deep resources of God by faith, we fail against the pressures of life. ”We must learn to rely on the power of Christ rather than attempting to be self-sufficient.

The Promise of God
“I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”
– Philippians 4:18-19
Finally, those who put their faith in Christ can find contentment through believing in His promises. In this final send-off, Paul discusses how the church of Philippi supported him and how God will meet their needs as well.
Wiersbe summarizes the verses: “You met my need, and God is going to meet your need. You met one need that I have, but my God will meet all your needs. You gave out of your poverty, but God will supply your needs out of His riches in glory.”

By trusting in God’s promises, God’s power, and God’s providence, you, too, can learn to be content whatever the circumstances. (SOUTH BAY BIBLE CHURCH)

Prayer Lists: July 4-5, 2020

1. Confess to God that we often struggle to be contented with what we have, and our needs seem to outnumber our resources. Ask for forgiveness that we often forget that God has graciously provided us with every spiritual blessing in Christ, and everything we need for life and godliness. Pray that the Lord will help us to be content in Him, and with what He has given us, and that we will not be focused on what our flesh desires or what the world tells us we should have. Pray that God will protect us from coveting possessions, talents or influence, relationships or prestige. Pray that He will keep our hearts from being anxious for what we do not have, and make us thankful for all the blessings that He has already given us. Pray that we will be changed by the ultimate example of contentment as demonstrated by Christ who was content to go to the cross to fulfil the Father’s will to rescue a people for Himself who can be free from discontent and be zealous for good works.

2. Klang Wesley will be reopening the church doors for all to come back and worship God on Saturday, July 11, 2020 and Sunday, July 12, 2020. However, the church has to observe strict conditions in the standard operating procedures (SOP) imposed by the Selangor State government. Pray that all procedures will be strictly followed, and things will run smoothly. Pray that the people who have medical conditions listed in the SOP will abide by the SOP, and continue to worship God from home with the online worship services.

3. Pray for the Sunday School Ministry as the Sunday School classes have been doing online classes during the last three months because of the MCO and RMCO. Pray for the team of teachers. As some of the teachers have been busy with work and other matters, pray that God will give them strength and wisdom to cope with the new normal of teaching the children via zoom. Pray that the teachers will be able to connect well with the children during the online lessons, and that the children will be attentive, and respond well to their teachers. Pray for good teamwork among the teachers, and that they will continue to encourage and support one another, and be passionate about the children’s ministry. Pray for God’s guidance for the Sister Tien Bin and the teachers as they look into the possibility of having a virtual VBS with Pastor Nicholas Choo this year because of the Covid-19 situation. Pray that God will grant wisdom and creativity to Pastor Nicholas Choo as to how the virtual camp will be carried out if the VBS is on.

4. Praise God that Malaysia has been successful in containing the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the nation. The government has so far allowed many sectors and businesses to resume, including domestic tourism, interstate travel, theme parks, cinemas, and schools, among others. Hence, there is always the possibility of an outbreak occurring at any time. Pray that the nation will be able to maintain and sustain zero local transmission for the next month. Pray that the rakyat will be responsible and continue to fully observe the SOPs of wearing masks and practicing good hygiene and social distancing in public as emphasised by the health authorities. Pray that business operators will ensure that all SOPs are strictly followed by their workers and customers. Pray that the authorities will be vigilant to deal with people who violate the recovery MCO regulations. Pray also that returnees from abroad will undergo a test for Covid-19 before entering Malaysia, do the 14-day home quarantine, and undergo a second Covid-19 screening on the 13th day of home quarantine. Pray that we, as a nation, will be humble, and learn from other nations that have eased and lifted their lockdowns so that Malaysia will not experience a second wave of infections.

5. Kindergartens and preschools have reopened. Pray that the people running these centres will always put the safety of the little children as top priority, and they will strictly follow the safeguards that are in line with the SOP set by the government, and if need be, restrict the number of children attending. After nearly four months of home-based learning, students from Form 1 to Form 4, Remove Class, Form 6 Semester 1, and primary school children from Years 5 & 6 will resume face-to-face classes on July 15, 2020, while children from Year 1 to Year 4 will return to school on July 22, 2020. Pray for wisdom for the school heads and teachers to choose the appropriate operating models set by the Education Ministry to ensure the students’ safety. Pray that the schools will always be diligent and vigilant in enforcing the SOP set by the government. Pray that all the students, especially those from primary and lower secondary age groups, will cooperate with the practices of temperature check, wearing of masks, and in particular, social distancing. Pray that teachers and students will do their part to abide by all the guidelines, and God will protect all of them, and keep them healthy.

6. Pray that the Church in Malaysia will approach God’s throne of grace with perseverance at this critical hour in our nation’s history to plead for God’s divine intervention to bring order and peace to our political arena. Pray against the spiritual forces of darkness that are threatening the nation, and that God will bring down the schemes of the enemy that are out to destroy, kill and steal righteousness and justice in the nation. Pray against all forms of nepotism and cronyism. Pray that the Lord will cause the people whom He has placed in positions of political leverage to boldly voice out on the side of truth, righteousness and justice, and to be able to impact the decision makers. Pray that God will bless our federal and state governments, and grant them wisdom to rule with integrity and uprightness. Pray for political stability in the nation, and that the government will focus on nation rebuilding, and restoring the economy of Malaysia.

7. Although lockdowns are being eased in many countries in the world, the daily number of new Covid-19 cases worldwide recently reached more than 10 million, and the devastating economic toll continues to rise in the world. Pray for the governments of the world’s nations to continue to implement the right policies, and to take a comprehensive approach by rigorous testing and tracing, quarantining every case, equipping and training health workers and educating and empowering communities to protect themselves and others, so as to suppress transmission and save lives. Pray for the health care workers in nations where the daily infections have continued to soar, that God will grant them physical, mental and emotional strength to cope with the situation, and that He will protect them and their families from the coronavirus and keep them healthy. Praise God that scientists from all over the world are working together, and are examining the progress made so far in developing effective health tools to improve the global response to the pandemic. Pray that God will bless their efforts, and an effective vaccine to combat the virus will be discovered quickly.
