Rejoicing In Our Trials & Troubles

“Since then it is by faith that we are justified, let us grasp the fact that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have confidently entered into this new relationship of grace, and here we take our stand, in happy certainty of the glorious things He has for us in the future. This doesn’t mean, of course, that we have only a hope of future joys—we can be full of joy here and now even in our trials and troubles. Taken in the right spirit these very things will give us patient endurance; this in turn will develop a mature character, and a character of this sort produces a steady hope, a hope that will never disappoint us. Already we have some experience of the love of God flooding through our hearts by the Holy Spirit given to us.”
ROMANS 5:1-5 (J.B. PHILLIPS NEW TESTAMENT)

This passage is a good “big picture” for believers. It has good Christian “keywords”: faith, peace, grace, rejoice, hope, glory. Then some harder words: suffering, endurance, character. Thankfully we finish with more great words: hope, love, the Holy Spirit.

Hope is mentioned several times. Humans need hope, and when hope is gone, we despair. When I find myself losing hope, it usually comes from focusing on specific, short-term situations. Even months- or years-long situations are short-term, in view of eternity. We are promised a share of God’s glory, through His grace!

“That’s great,” you say, “but I can’t always focus on the hope of eternal life and ignore the present.” This is our constant tension: the now and the not yet. It’s where the harder words come in: enduring suffering that builds character. In our instant gratification culture, we love to share glory. Endure suffering, rejoice in suffering? Not so much.

Truth be told, this cycle – suffering, enduring, building character, and obtaining hope – is the cycle of our Christian lives. We experience it in big and small ways, no matter our situation. If we rejoice in sufferings, knowing that the end result is the building of our character, this gives us hope. God is refining us!

Finally, sharing in God’s glory is not restricted to the future in heaven. We share in His glory now, in the present, as we receive His grace and peace, and trust Him for our hope in all things big and small, present and future. (BETH KIRBY)

Prayer Points: December 29, 2019

Sunday, (Dec 29) – Praise God for declaring us righteous in His sight; that we are as justified as we will ever be, and we have full and irrevocable peace with God because He made peace with us through the finished work of Jesus. Thank Him that we are no longer weighted down with guilt because we are standing in His grace, and we no longer have to fear the future and things we cannot control. Pray that God will give us grace to rejoice in our sufferings, and free us from our complaining and grumbling by increasing our ability to endure and to persevere. Pray that the Holy Spirit will pour more of His love into our hearts, so that there will be less room for shame, foolishness, anger, anxiety and pride.

Monday, (Dec 30) – The Watchnight Covenant Renewal Service will be held tomorrow night at 10p.m. Pray that our church members will make it a priority to end 2019 by coming for the service. Pray for good weather and smooth traffic flow. Pray that we will be open and honest before the Holy Spirit as He searches our hearts and minds, and as we reflect on how we have lived our lives this year. Pray that as we renew our covenant with God, we will sincerely commit to grow deeper in Christ as His disciples in the year ahead. Pray that many will stay back for the Mid-Night Prayer that follows. Pray for God’s anointing upon the youths as they take charge of the prayer gathering.

Tuesday, (Dec 31) – The Morning Watches will begin on Thursday to the following Tuesday (January 2-7, 2020) at 6:00a.m., except for Sunday, January 5, which will begin at 7:00a.m. Pray for God’s guidance and wisdom upon the men who will be leading the Morning Watches. Pray that our church members will give priority to begin the new year with corporate prayer, and come together to seek God in worship and prayer. Pray for good weather, and smooth traffic flow, especially since the new school year will begin on Thursday, and people will be travelling to PJ and KL for work in the morning.

Wednesday, (Jan 1) – As we usher in 2020, praise God for watching over us and always being there for each and every one of us this year. Pray for forgiveness as we recall and repent of the things that hindered us from getting close to God in 2019, when we have neglected prayer and the study and obeying of His Word. Pray that this will be a year of change for all of us, and we will aim to place God in His rightful place in the centre of our lives. Pray that we will focus on love, peace and unity within our families, relatives, friends, as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray that we will be guided by the Holy Spirit as we consistently study His Word and practice the principles of it in our daily lives.

Thursday, (Jan 2) – Pray for the Nation: Visit Malaysia 2020 has been designated for the world to know the beauty of our nation. Pray that Tourism Malaysia and the tour agencies will work closely to promote tourism to as many nations as possible. Eco-tourism has become a popular means of attracting foreign visitors. Pray that the Orang Asli in Semenanjung and Orang Asal in East Malaysia will benefit from Visit Malaysia year, and the economy of the nation will receive a significant boost.

Friday, (Jan 3) – Pray for TRAC: Thank God for a new year. Pray for all TRAC churches, for a fresh and new spirit to be upon all pastors and leaders. Pray that the disappointments of 2019 will be left behind, especially in the area of relationships and expectations. Pray that the Holy Spirit will bring fresh winds of encouragement upon all the churches. Pray for new leaders who begin serving in LCECs in 2020, that they will adapt to the leadership team, and keep their focus on Christ always. Pray for pastors at new parishes, for good relationship building. Pray also that church members will recognize the new giftings in the new pastors and not unnecessarily compare the strengths of their former pastors with what they see initially in their new pastors.

Saturday, (Jan 4) – Pray for the World: Pray for world peace and unity in 2020, that wars and persecutions in the name of religion will cease. Pray that there will be respect and tolerance for one another’s beliefs. Pray for the sick, the terminally ill, the abandoned, the homeless, the rejected, the lost and those affected by natural calamities, that they will receive help, and not be forgotten.

Advent week 4 – Living The Advent LOVE (John 3: 16-17)

C. S. Lewis put it like this:

“Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket—safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”

There is no way to have a real relationship without becoming vulnerable to hurt. And Christmas tells us that God became breakable and fragile. God became someone we could hurt. Why? To get us back. And if you believe this and take it into your life, you’re blessed. As you take in the truth of what He did for you—how loved and affirmed you are—you’ll be able to let down your defenses in your own relationships with other people. You won’t always need to guard your honor. You’ll be able to let down the barriers down. You’ll be able to move into intimate relationships with other people.

What is in the package of Christmas? His vulnerability for intimacy with us, which gives us the vulnerability to be intimate with the people around us. If you believe in Christmas—that God became a human being—you have an ability to face suffering, a resource for suffering that others don’t have.

For Reflection:
• What is the definition of true love? How does God show his love to us?

• How does vulnerability in our relationships affect how we love? What defenses or barriers do you naturally have up that you need to let down in order to have intimacy with others?

• How can you show love to others during this Christmas season? (TIM KELLER)

Prayer Points: December 22, 2019

Sunday, (Dec 22) – Praise God, and give Him all glory that He sent His gift of pure love to us that first Christmas, robed in the delicate skin of a Baby, whose purpose was to walk this earth in complete love, and then to sacrificially give His life as an atonement for our sins. Pray that as we approach Christmas, we will spend time to reflect on the magnitude of love that was made manifest in Jesus, our Emmanuel – God with us. Pray that God will fill our hearts and minds with the significance of that truth. Pray that the light of Jesus’ love will always shine in our hearts. Pray that we will open our hearts to Him, and allow His love to transform every aspect of our lives, and touch everyone we encounter.

Monday, (Dec 23) – Pray for the Christmas Day Service. Pray for God’s anointing upon all the worship enablers. Pray especially for the Christmas Musical Drama, that the sole purpose of all those involved will be to point to Jesus, and give Him all the glory in everything we do. Pray for God’s power and anointing upon all the actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and the people involved in sound, tech, props and managing the stage, and for everything to flow smoothly. Pray for God’s anointing as pastor rounds up the presentation. Pray that all those coming for the service will be touched by the Holy Spirit, and that they will respond to the Lord, whether for salvation, or rededication of their lives to Him.

Tuesday, (Dec 24) – Pray for the Nation: Pray for God’s protection upon all the churches in the nation as His people celebrate Christmas. Pray that God will be magnified and glorified for sending Jesus to our world. Pray that many pre-believers will take time to go for Christmas services and celebrations, and be touched by the message of God’s love for this world. Pray that seed of the Gospel will be planted in many hearts, and that hearts are ready for harvest will be surrendered to Christ.

Wednesday, (Dec 25) – Pray for the World: Pray for the nations in the west that as they celebrate Christmas, the Holy Spirit will bring them back to the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of Christ. Pray that the people will repent of their moral decline and their rebellion against God’s truth. Pray that God will pour a spirit of repentance upon these nations, and the people will rend their hearts, and return to God, especially the millennials.

Thursday, (Dec 26) – Pray for all the young married couples in our church that as they adjust to married life, Christ will always be the centre of their marriages. Pray that they will deepen their relationship with Him through studying His Word, prayer and worship, and know a deep communion with Christ every day. Pray that their marriages be a place where they lean on Him in every situation. Pray that in the midst of their busy lives, God will help them to love each other deeply from the heart, and be intentional in spending quality time together.

Friday, (Dec 27) – Pray for TRAC: As this week is the last week of 2019, pray that all members of TRAC churches will take time to thank God for people in their local churches: to thank God for their pastors and fulltime church staff that go the extra mile to serve people in the church; to praise God for church leaders who give their precious time to serve God in various areas in church; to thank God for ordinary people who do the behind scenes work, that often times goes unnoticed, except for God who sees all things. Praise God for non-church members who regularly attend church and be associated with God’s family. Above all, thank God for being our God in 2019, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Saturday, (Dec 28) – Pray that as we approach the end of 2019, we will take time to reflect on the year that will soon be over. Give God praise for His goodness, mercy and faithfulness. Give thanks to Him for His divine protection over our lives and the loves of our families throughout the year, and for His manifold blessings that has brought us joy, peace and comfort. Ask for God’s forgiveness as we recall things we have said and done this year that grieved His Spirit. Pray that God will fill us with a renewed love and passion for Him, and to be on fire for Him as the year draws to an end. Pray that the Lord will go ahead of us with His divine presence into 2020.

Advent, Week 3 – Living The Advent Joy

What do you get excited about during the Christmas season? What do you wait for with glad anticipation? You probably have traditions in your family you look forward to every year. Maybe it’s the lights or the special music. Maybe it’s the time spent with family or the peculiar customs that make your Christmas memories unique. Whatever it is, these are some of the reasons so many people love this time of year. For others, though, Christmas is a reminder of the absence of a family member who is no longer with us or broken relationships and memories that bring us pain.

So far, we have looked at Hope (the confident expectation of the fulfillment of the promise in the future) and Peace (the ability to live with our hearts at rest in the midst of difficult circumstances). In this third week in Advent, we turn to Joy: happiness that supersedes circumstance. The prophet Isaiah gives us a glimpse into true Joy. It is the natural response to really good news. The fact that God’s people find themselves in difficult circumstances only heightens the level of excitement for the promise of peace, salvation and redemption the comes because He reigns and He will return.

We are people marked by good news. The Gospel promise of Jesus is the best news! We have received it with faith and wait in anticipation like we wait to open a present wrapped and set under the tree. Joy becomes our natural response the more we comprehend the magnitude of what we have been promised and see its value. Many of the presents we unwrap year after year lose their appeal as a newer, shinier gift takes its place. The amazing truth at Christmas is that Jesus will be more glorious and good than we expect Him to be. He will blow the doors off our meager expectations when we see Him.

For Reflection:
• When you take account of your life, what past, present or future gets you most excited?

• When things are difficult, what situations tend to make it hard for you to live with joy?

• Spend time praying and thanking God for all the difficult things that will no longer exist when Jesus returns.

• Spend time asking God to give you perspective, excitement and anticipation for what it will be like when Jesus returns so that you have lasting joy.
(JON LOWDER)
